  • @Mr.Nichan

    @Mr.Nichan

    5 жыл бұрын

    It's at least partially a translation choice in the subtitles. In English, we usually use the word "so" to mean "therefore" (using therefore as a more formal variant), but "so" also has other meanings (eg. "He did so"). Most common words in any language have a range of different (but usually related) meanings. Prepositions and conjunctions (or similar concepts in other languages) are notoriously unpredictable from language to language, so it makes a certain amount of sense to translate such words using words like "therefore" that have a narrower range of meanings, allowing you to specify which meaning is meant in a certain context. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if he tries to learn the same basic words in every language he learns. If a certain subset of vocabulary let him hold conversations in one language, why not see if works in another? If I were using this kind of strategy (I'm planning to), it might make sense to learn words in terms of the more precise concepts of each of their meanings rather than in terms of common English words, like "so", that have no exact translations (not ones that include all of their meanings) in most languages. This kind of habit of thought could have affected the way he subtitled it.

  • @ispeakmucho

    @ispeakmucho

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@Mr.Nichan this is correct. I learn a few language and after my first 2nd language, I certainly feel I reach for the same words because I know "what I want to say" so to speak and it generally doesn't change. It also works because you easily have a subset of words to reach for based on these "bins" of thought that you gather them into i.e. therefore, otherwise, actually, really etc

    @@an1van I mean certain languages use more nasal sounds than other and prononciation is very unique so you have to adapt your vocal range to the language, usually I tend to try to imitate the way people speak even down to the accent and I just sort of end up trying to do the accent of whomever I am speaking without noticing, I can feel quite embarrassed when speaking to someone in English because I end up copying regional accents too, like I eventually start to go Scottish if I listen too much to a Scot, or very cockney if I am listening to someone with a Cockney accent, it is even more embarrassing when it happens with Canadians with thick accents or Aussies, I personally can sound like a local in terms of accents and prononciation in any language given I have heard people speak it.

But you coming in, being polite, breaking the ice, and leaving all these people with a positive "after-image" is monumentally good for all black people and the people you encounter in your videos.
