Yoren: Protection of the Innocent | Character Analysis | ASOIAF

The Wall was no place for the faint of heart, yet few recruits of the Night’s Watch could call themselves brave. It was through no fault of the Watch, for the Seven Kingdoms had grown soft, and the gallant men that were left had no interest in spending their lives on the Wall. Instead, it fell to recruiters to find fresh trainees from the dungeons and pits of poverty in Westeros. During the events of A Song of Ice and Fire, this recruiter was a man named Yoren. Hello everyone, and welcome back to Exploring Fiction. Gruff and grizzled on the outside, Yoren traversed the land, dealing with and drafting into the ranks of the Watch the worst of the worst. But on the inside, he proved to have a kinder heart than his exterior features displayed. When woeful steel severed the head of House Stark, Yoren preserved its legacy, and even died protecting those with a brighter future than he. Men like Yoren were a dying breed, especially in the Night’s Watch, but he showed that virtue still existed in a dreary world. So, who exactly is Yoren, and why is he such an interesting character? Let’s explore…

Yoren was awesome. Amory Lorch gets what he deserves, though 😂

Yoren was a stud, one of the most likeable side characters in a game of thrones and a clash of kings.

@@ExploringFiction no problem, I just found your channel a few months back and the first video I saw of yours was the Corrupt Kingsguard video which was another awesome topic that NO ONE else ever talks about. I’m looking forward to seeing more of these & curious to see what characters/topics you cover in the future. This Yoren video is so cool bc once again it’s a character nobody ever talks about. I saw you also did a video about the mutiny against Jon Snow “For the Watch” & was thinking it would be really cool if you could cover the planned mutiny against Mormont & the other Nights Watch officers at the Fist of the First Men & the conspirators that led to eventual execution at Crasters Keep. Keep up the amazing work!

They don’t mention it in the show but Yoren made one bad decision that cost him his life and caused a lot of problems for Arya. In the book Yoren has Arya and a bunch of recruits he got from Flea Bottom and kings landing dungeons. I could have taken a ship back to the Wall (dropping of Arya on the way probably at White Harbor) but instead decides to go overland to pick up more recruits on the way. This ended up being a really bad decision. The war hadn’t Broken out yet When Yoren left king’s landing but he should have anticipated trouble with the death of Ned Stark and taken Arya home by ship as quickly as possible

It would make sense since Yoren travels across the 7 kingdoms and probably picks up a lot of info and rumors.

I think it’s interesting that there’s a pretty good chance that’s Arya actions led directly to Yoren’s death. When fleeing Arya gives the caged prisoners an axe to break free and then when they return Yoren has an axe and his head and we later see the same caged prisoners with Lorch at Harrenhal.

To me, it reads like Yoren, and likely Ned, were the intended victims of Jaqen. That's why Jaq and crew dip out when they do-and pop back in. Jaqen/Rorge/Biter-they killed Yoren. Check it out, he had an axe in his head when Arya finds him. Arya gave Rorge an axe so that they could escape the fire. Something KEY to Arya chapters is ALL the information she has that is easy to overlook. Was Jaqen also supposed to kill Ned? I think so. Varys made a deal with Yoren-that is why Yoren was STILL in KL, waiting to leave, when he comes across Arya. He was waiting for Ned, to take to the Wall. Joff effed that up. Yoren was DEF an intended victim...but we can't know for sure if Ned was since Joff ended THAT potential storyline. THINK about THAT trip to the Wall IF Ned had lived to take it with Yoren...AND Gendry. Holy shit lol...can you IMAGINE?!? Varys hired Jaqen to 'fix' this potential problem. Was Gendry a target? I think so-I think that was why Rorge and Biter show up at the Inn, when Brienne is there. I think they were looking for Gendry. IF Jaqen had a target AT the Wall, he would have gone to the Wall. WHY Jaqen fixates on Arya? That's prolly a different video, but Jaqen could have easily just taken Arya and survivors to the Wall/Winterfell IF he had a target beyond Yoren, and likely Ned. I am worried for Sam, beings as he WAS at the Wall, and is now in Oldtown. As is Jaqen. It's weird though-Rorge's and Biter's travels after parting with Jaqen. They are on a mission.
