Kotzen is unreal..he came onto the scene a little later and missed the big 80s wave..at least here in N.A..we should thank JAPAN for keeping rock alive through the drought over the last 30 yrs.

This Richie's solo is one of the best of all time!

Richie all the way. He’s great with a pick but I think he’s more expressive and unique without the pick. Much harder to pull off the techniques he does. Incredible

The thing with Malmsteen is, even today with a gazillion technically proficient players on the planet and a dated genre, he is instantly recognizable. The tone, the licks, the way he (over?)confidently plays everything. It's unique to him.

Ritchie. Tasteful, clean, innovative, melodic and tight.

When Ritchie started playing, I completely forgot about how bad the video quality was. That’s how solidly he knocked it out of the park.

They're both great. Malmsteen captures more of Blackmore's spirit in his rendition (whilst at the same time adding his own flair) whilst Richie goes in a slightly different direction. It's all good to me!

I actually thought it was the other way around. Richie's version had more elements of the original while Malmsteen's was basically the same stuff he always does, adapted to this song.

Remamber. Yngwie is improvising but Richie is playing well rehearsed and practiced solo. There is no point to compare. There is one thing that we all agree that both are great guitar players 🤘

@@njineermike u can tell he is improvising a large portion of it, which is great cause u never hear the same solo twice. it's just a question of improv vs. composing I suppose but both are great solos

As much as i love Yngwie, i gotta give this to Richie.. The dude is a beast and is always evolving as a musician.. ✌️

Wow!! RK playing Malmsteen.....different technique, but also very good. RK more versatile, he could play anything.

Ritchie has this contest hands down. He stays in the pocket and doesn't waste notes. He plays clean and stays in the framework of the song. Yngwie always has to be a "Speed Demon" and most of his leads sound the same. All over the place!!!!!

Agree. I dont like Richies covers of Deep Purple,... but of creative part Ingwie is just an icon while Koltzen is meaningless. I knew him only through guitar lessons, he is a virtuoso.

Ive always been a fan of Malmstein but he is a virtuoso yes for sure and thats about it .none of his music ever got much interest beyond guitar-centric music lovers and guitar players . Kotzen while not as iconic of a virtuoso is still a virtuoso nonetheless with an epic voice to match and absolutely incredible songwriting skills ..............he has a catalog of songs he's produced as a solo artist that I believe are unmatched by any except the giants of rock such as Clapton, Aerosmith, Stones = and even then im not so sure Kotzen is beat . go listen and see for yourself .

I’m a HUGE YM fan. One of my all time favorites. Having said that Richie will kick his Ars all day.

Kotzen is great and precise but what i like is the attack of yngwie is so much of a character, is like he is kicking your ass everytime it is full of angst

Richie Kotzen has always been tasteful soulful player with superior chops even than Yngwie ! He owns this one by a long country mile !

The real answer is Doug Aldrich (WHITESNAKE). His version on "Live in Still of the Night DVD" puts Yngwie and Richie to shame in that regard. His tone was to die for too.

Yeah I think Richies got more to his game than Yngwie and I too am a massive Malmsteen fan, although on the rare occasions when Yngwie goes into blues mode his playing is on another level too.

Yngwie was as expected, but I didn't realize Richie had those neo-classical shred chops.

I gotta give it to Richie here. I think you can't in any universe make a better rendition of that solo ever again after that.

@@MegaRockstar5150 Kotzen just uses a lot of legato. He can't pick at that speed. That makes it sound smoother, not cleaner. Also, audio quality is superior in Kotzen's vid. But during the 80's Kotzen was just another YJM wannabe like everybody else.

Malmsteen is a punch in the face while Richie smoothly slips up behind you and chokes you out! They both knock you out with amazing playing but in a different way.

Kotzen is a monster . Not a surprise at all - Ritchie takes it

Richie is sill the best.

Even though Kotzen was even more technical and clean on this solo, Malmsteen’s scales were much more appropriate for this composition. Malmsteen really contributed to this barocco feel, whereas Kotzen just showed how else you can play on this chord progression. His guitar work here expands the technical horizon, but it doesn’t really contribute to musicality.
