    Yianni looks unbeatable here. It's interesting that he had such close matches earlier in the day. I can only assume it was a weight cut issue or maybe he just started slow. Either way, this Yianni is on another level

  • @mach7rs

    @mach7rs

    2 жыл бұрын

    It's also worth nothing that Yianni had an incredibly long layoff from folkstyle competition. Training and competing in freestyle is one thing, but college wrestling is a different animal. It takes some time to get that rust off and get back into the swing of things.

  • @lasvegasloner4621

    @lasvegasloner4621

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@mach7rs Very good observation, add to that some styles just mess people up when not used to it for that time, and I was there and Yianni looked like he was aware he wasn’t moving well against Ridge. He looked sleepy and was looking at coaches as if he was disappointed with himself. Seemed to turn it up for Sasso. Everyone gets to learn though, and usually whomever loses os the one who improves the most. Some won’t understand but these wrestlers got far tougher just from wrestling Yianni, as he got better from his losses. Great to read your mentioning folkstyle as requiring time; many give freestyle too much credit. It’s just that it’s “international” so billions do it, and the base of competition is enormous. That folkstyle guys switch over and still sometimes medal in freestyle, says something about folkstyle athletes.

  • @mach7rs

    @mach7rs

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@lasvegasloner4621 ahh that’s interesting. It definitely sounds like he needed to get back into the swing and after watching him the rest of the season, he got that rust off and then some. And yes, absolutely. You can learn from wins and losses, but oftentimes losses help expose our weaknesses. I definitely think it helps you get better just by getting your hands on a guy like Yianni. As for the last point, I would have to agree everyone in the US over markets freestyle. I understand that it is the international style, but people act like it is all you need to do and will improve your folk style wrestling. How are you getting better in folkstyle in the top and bottom positions, or in scrambles, when training freestyle? The answer is you aren’t.

    1st period -Always starts in neutral position (both standing) 2nd period - A coin is flipped (as seen at 04:00) the coin is either red or green corresponding to their ankle bands. The wrestler who's color comes up on top has the option to start the period up, down, in neutral position, or to defer the decision to the other wrestler. 3rd period - Other wrestler chooses up, down, or neutral. In Freestyle, which only had two periods, they always start periods in neutral position. They do sometimes during the periods start in a down/up configuration. I don't know exactly what triggers that in freestyle.

    Yianni seems to have an excellent demeanor. He is not jumping up and down or expressing elation as some wrestlers. This cool, "I did what I had to do and now on to the next job" appearance. The wrestlers who are jumping up and down after any win should be softly admonished. When there is a winner there is always a loser. The outward signs of showing your prowess over your opponent have no place in wrestling, in my opinion. These displays of emotion are demeaning to your opponent. For what reason? After a fair bout there is no reason to have any hard feelings. Better yet, you can even honor each other. Wrestling is a unique sport in that individually every wrestler has to work tremendously hard, overcome his/her own limitations, and strive harder than the regular person on the street. It is a unique club. Years later after wrestling you are still in that unique club. Both wrestlers work hard at achieving their spot on the team and into competition. The loser only lost the bout, but he/she are still winners. Second place winner. How many people can say they are second best? One

    How he could say Sasso is a better wrestler in FOLK style, I have NO IDEA!!! Seeing Yanni has ONE (1), Loss in College, and then beat him later, I don't know what he's thinking. Yanni's one of the best qrestlers, if not THE best. I have it Gable Stevenson (1), Yanni (2), and Spencer (3). I WOULD have had Spencer Lee at one (1), but I question him right now, and wonder if he shouldn't have taken a red shirt year, or injury year. I believe he STILL has no AL'S, in either k ee, and I'm about as big of an Iowa Wrestling Fan as there is, and even I think Spence ducked Pat Glory at that match. Not only that, I think it's the SECOND time he's ducked Pat. I did have it Spence, Gable, and Yanni, since it had been so long since Yanni had even wrestled in College, and Gable is not only a College Champion, but an Olympic Gold Medalist. HOW can you argue Gables not being on top!!
