YES, YOU CAN PAINT LAMINATE FURNITURE! Laminate Dresser Makeover

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

YES, you CAN paint laminate furniture! You just need to know the "secret!" This video reveals the secret to painting any laminate surface and creating a durable, beautiful finish!
A lot of the furniture you purchase today is laminate. Repainting it the right way so the paint does not easily scrape off is simple and does not require much work.
In this video, I show you how to identify laminate furniture and then show you the simple steps to successfully paint it with a durable, long lasting finish.
A lot of IKEA furniture is laminate so the the techniques I review with you in this video will always work to refinish IKEA furniture.
Only a few supplies are needed and a few minutes of your time to makeover any laminate furniture.
I have used this technique many times and know from experience that the final finish is durable and will remain beautiful for years to come. (Of course, the thing that takes the longest, is the time required to let the primer, paint and finish dry!)
When furniture flipping for profit, you need to be able to finish a piece of furniture quickly but you also need to ensure that the refinishing will stand the test of time. When doing a furniture makeover of laminate furniture, you can use these same supplies if you choose to spray them on or hand paint based on your preference.

    Love your channel, just found it. very instructional. on this video I had two questions. 1) you choose chalk paint, why? could one use interior house paint? why or why not? I ask because the color I want to match needs to be custom mix like they do at paint stores and I do not think that they will do that at like Sherman Williams stores etc., 2) now you used a sponge for the clear coat, could you have used the disposable roller like you did for the primer? why or why not? thank you. I look forward to learning more.

  • @FurnitureFlippingForProfit

    @FurnitureFlippingForProfit

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Lyndon. Thanks for all your questions 1) I am using chalk paint because it is very durable and easy to apply. Have you ever used it? It is quite different from any other paint I have used. You can actually go to Home Depot and they will color match the Behr chalk paint to any color you want. They can also mix it in any of the colors on the "wall". I do not like to use latex paint because it peels off in time. Watch my video where I tested different brands of chalk paint and tested them for durability. I painted a piece of metal with chalk paint and one week later after it had cured I had to actually use paint stripper to get it off the metal!! Here is the link to that video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qYdstq6NdJDcl5M.html 2) If you use a disposable foam roller to apply sealer you will get tiny bubbles in the sealer. If you use a car washing sponge you can very quickly apply a thin coat with no streaks, brush marks or bubbles. Give it a try- you just might like it! OF course if you use a sponge, you may need to apply 3-5 coats to get the proper thickness but it goes on so fast that you are done in no time. Plus it dries real fast when you use a sponge.

    Curious is there something inherently better about using chalked paint vs other paints for laminate refresh or is that just what was preferred for the “look”?

  • @FurnitureFlippingForProfit

    @FurnitureFlippingForProfit

    Chalk paint can be thinned easily so the paint brush marks are minimal. It also adheres well to various surfaces and finishes. Give it a try and you will see what I mean!!! Latex is think and leaves brush strokes. It can sometimes peel off. Chalk paint sticks! BUT you should always put a sealer over chalk paint to protect it!!!

    I've watched many channels and am just staring in flipping furniture. So many say be careful applying poly to the "light" colored furniture because of yellowing. You don't mention this. Do you find that this Varathane Ultimate doesn't yellow light colored finishes? I am fixing to flip and dining table and am concerned about yellowing. As yourself if I am going to sell a piece I want it to be as high quality as I can make it.

  • @FurnitureFlippingForProfit

    @FurnitureFlippingForProfit

    2 жыл бұрын

    First and foremost- most yellowing on white furniture is not due to the sealer as much as it is due to bleed through. Therefore I always use an oil based primer any time I am going to paint furniture white. In addition, if I have pine knots in the wood I ALSO spray the knots with shellac. I prime it even if I am not sanding it to bare wood. I repeat- I ALWAYS PRIME WOOD FURNITURE THAT I AM GOING TO PAINT WHITE. I prefer spray primer- it goes on quickly, does not require sanding in between and seals the wood better than water based primer. The only time I have had a problem with water based poly turning yellow is when I have some drips- the drips will sometimes turn yellow. So I make certain I do not have drips. I too am very concerned about white furniture turning yellow- I believe the primer is most important.

    I usually put 3-4 thin coats of water based polyurethane on a piece. I only sand it with crumpled up newspaper to get off the "nibs". Of course you have to be careful that you are in a dust free environment. I never paint or apply finish outside- too much dust!

  • @FurnitureFlippingForProfit

    Hi Glory. "wood laminate" is veneered wood. A laminate surface on furniture is usually a synethic plastic like material with wood grain printed on it. Formica is a much thicker and harder surface used on kitchen counters. I do not believe they put formica on dressers. Formica is a brand name. However, Formica is a kind of laminate.
