Yes, You Can Make a Living Growing Mushrooms

Hey MossBacks! We’ve got another informational video for you today.
We get a lot of questions about whether or not you can make a living growing mushrooms in your basement. For me, the answer is absolutely yes! I keep expanding my business and pushing harder, but I've been very tempted to sit back and soak up some profits from time to time. In the making of this video, I actually got to see just how much someone can make keeping their op small and running lean. The power of mushrooms to provide is astounding.

    I've spent the past year (almost) just learning to grow, cultivate, harvest, mushrooms, mycelium, LC, humidity, heat, grainspawn, and all of the ins and outs. It will be another eight months before I start actually trying my hand at farmers markets and expanding, I'm not looking to get rich, I'm looking to make a living doing something I absolutely love. This is by far one of the MOST informational videos on growing mushrooms I have ever seen. Thank you so much for doing this and being so transparent. Absolutely amazing stuff.

    You and Samantha have truly inspired me and thousand of others. Let that sink in. I’m just getting started but pumped. I just made my diy flow chamber and shared a video on it , my spores have taken in Agar and moved them over to x4 3lb spawn bags today, yes!! But nervous that they will survive without contam , but it’s also so exciting. My garage is warm (79) but moved spawn bags inside. I think you guys could crazy kill it if you got FOCUSED , went back to the basement only, got a strick accountant, sold more online spores , maybe CBD and offered an online course. I love your personality and you’re both awesome. Please keep making content.

    I've watched a lot of videos on here about this stuff, but i have to tell you, this video is absolutely awesome. Straight to the point and informative, about some things that people aren't always willing to share. I feel like all the honest details and numbers that you shared really set this video apart. Not to mention, you come across as a very approachable, normal, down to earth kind of dude. I really appreciate you sharing this information. I had just seen some discouraging things, but i was really trying to not listen to it, because i felt like the people it was coming from might have made some avoidable mistakes. That and the fact that i just dont think i operate the same way they do. Im a planner. I do reasearch. Then I plan some more. I really believe i have realistic goals in all of this, and i really didnt want to let someone else's bad experience discourage me. You had a good plan and executed it. You didnt overextend yourself. I feel like this is managable and possible, if you do it right and you're the type of person who understands that the reality is, you aren't growing mushrooms for fun, this is now a matter of starting a successful small business from the ground up, doing something that can be labor intensive and monotonous at times. I do feel like i have a realistic idea of what i want to do, and what i can do. This video was very encouraging and just kinda reminded me to have a little confidence in myself about it. I live in Alabama. I feel like our lives and situations are similar. You don't seem to have had some unfair advantage when you started. You just did it right. That's all I'm trying to do, I think its a smart plan. Thank you so much! Very awesome video!!!

    Inspirational! Makes me think about growing mushrooms part time to try net an extra thousand a month.

  • @mycominer

    @mycominer

    3 жыл бұрын

    $1,000/$8 = 125 lbs a month. 125 lbs/2 = 62.5 first flush blocks. 62.5/4 = 15.62 blocks per week. That's all you would have to make and grow out every week. We won't count the 2nd flushes here and keep in mind this is gross so you would have to further refine your expenses as well. If you flushed blocks twice then you could average it out and say 125 lbs/3 = 41.66 first flush blocks. 41.66/4 = 10.42 blocks per week. Now you throw in a 10% crop loss, and count out your expenses which fully grown out and delivered should come somewhere to $8.50/block, so $8.50*10.42 = $88.49 as the full expenses for those blocks. So you would need to grow out another 4-8 blocks to cover those expenses and then you can actually net that per month. If you sell at markets and sell your mushrooms for $20/lbs like most people do, it'll change the numbers drastically.

I'm working on tracking what came from where and how long it's taken from begging to end. Any advice you have on the paperwork side of things (especially like this video) is incredibly helpful. 01:26 📊 In 2019, Master Creek Mushrooms grossed $140,293 with a profit of $36,622, operating in a basement. 04:29 💼 Unnecessary expenditures, like hiring employees and experimental projects, affected the profit margin. 11:25 🌱 The addition of a second grow room in 2019 significantly contributed to the income, projecting a six-figure profit. 12:59 💡 Efficient use of utilities in a basement operation with efficient heating and cooling kept costs at $8,019 for the year. 15:46 🚀 Success attributed to a "barbarian mindset," focusing on eliminating unnecessary tasks and earning idle time for strategic growth.

I just showed you my numbers and how if I just grew mushrooms and sold them to my chefs and worked 16 hours a week I would have made $100K. T.r. has also said that you can call yourself a mushroom farmer when you have suffered more than you ever thought possible, and more than anyone else. That's not the way I want to live life, and why would anyone ever grow mushrooms if it was really that bad?

    Not looking to rip anyone's business plan apart. I'm sitting on 120acre farm that currently belongs to my parents. They want to sell. We've been looking for years, through USDA for land to set up our grow. Now, we've come to an agreement on buying our parent's land and we will use it for mushroom farming. As you may know now, most states have Covid money burning a hole in their pockets and USDA has recently been given even more money for domestic distribution among specialty crop farmer's. My question is. How many pounds were you producing, on average, in that 800' basement? I'm looking at putting multiple 2000 sqft buildings on the property, specifically for mushrooms. I'm trying to give an accurate business plan for the government. But with the rate hikes, not sure what kinda hikes to include in said business plan. Any ideas are appreciated!

It's the best I can do for now, trying to reach that next level up. I am contemplating adding hydrated lime to my substrate but not finding any info on how much to add to a 5 lb. block. Any words of wisdom?

    You wouldn't be selling your mushrooms for $8/lbs. I have consulted on farms in Cali and they mostly sell in the $10-$12/lbs range. Making my $80/boxes $100-$120/boxes. So it would up that income too.

    If you mean right now, I would say that it's about half fresh mushrooms and half other sources of income including LC, supplies, spawn, commissions, and the like. I would need to sit down and run some numbers now to see if that has changed at all, but I like the breeding/cloning side of things better and am wanting to work my company in a different direction. Right now I'm a farmer who happens to sell strains, but I would like to be a strain company that also happens to grow mushrooms.
