Yes. You can make a Leyden jar with some simple stuff.

Ғылым және технология

Here is a DIY Leyden jar based on an episode of MacGyver.
It's essentially just a capacitor created from water, a plastic cup and some metal. With this device, you can store charge and produce an electrical spark.

    Thanks for this awesome video!, these are wicked experiments though caution is always needed. Some tips for beginners... 1) Make sure the aluminium foil wraps around the cup/plastic bottle as smoothly as possible to prevent static discharge . 2) Use thicker wiring (3 mm) for better current flow. 3) If using a cup place foil on the inside to bump up the positive charge collection. 4) Add a pin pong ball wrapped in foil to the nail for a great discharge. 5) The more strokes with PVC pipe the bigger the voltage! Have fun!! 😉

    The aluminium has sharp edges, Doesn't it let go of the charges?

  • @DuskyDaily

    It's not holding the actual charge nonetheless, it suppose to be getting extra positive charge from the ground / environment to hold the negative charges in the water. And water don't have charge edges. :)

    You need to stir the water and desolve the salt before putting a top on the cup or jar so it will produce more energy

    Hello, I have a problem with my Leyden jar ... First of all I have made my Leyden jar by sticking aluminium foil both to the inside and outside and using paper clips ( but obviously that won't matter ) . The thing is that whenever I try to charge a Leyden jar I hear a crackling sound... But u believe its not supposed to be like that right ? I mean , when we try to discharge the jar then we hear a sound... So why are things working oppositely for me ?! Plz help...

  • @rhettallain

    @rhettallain

    the cracking sound might be a spark. If your two metal foils are super close to each other, the charge could make a voltage high enough to produce a spark and discharge the jar.

    no, it's capacitor because you are holding electrical charges, not chemical energy. That's why the aluminium is separated from water by the cup

    I was a bit confused also. This is a capacitor. The salted water (conductive) is one 'plate', and the aluminum foil is the other plate.

    That was just an electrostatic generator, probably a van de graff. It's just rubbing to grab electors off of a material. You can rub a PVC pipe with a towel to do the same thing.
