He's really not on your side. Scandinavians (so I've heard) actually believe government exists to provide services to the citizenry to make their lives better. In the US, Republicans believe government exists to make it easier to funnel the wealth of the working and middle classes to the top 1% using corporations as the channel to do so. After that job is done, Republicans believe government should be dismantled or hobbled into impotence.

No, not really. The problem still existing concerning SS is the amount Congress borrowed but never paid back into the system. This should include appropriate interest dividends... SS should be one economic fund which cannot be borrowed from & where every working person pays into... The concept is quite simple but the reality of Congressional members not knowing how to wrap their brains around domestic fiscal policy is the tipped over oil drum in the hallway.. SS should not be on the wy to bankruptcy in less than 10 years. Everyone of us crunch our own monetary numbers & figure out how to navigate so tht down the rod in the future we are solvent with surplus economy resources... Congress needs to listen to the financial math people & realize policy decisions solely based on partisanship loyalty is the recipe for insolvency throughout our entire future economy...

  • @lawsonj39

@@marcstreiff6067 That's not how economics actually works. You're still stuck on that 2000 campaign nonsense about a Social Security "lockbox." In reality, Congress creates money by allocating it; it doesn't have to depend on tax receipts. If it creates too much, you get inflation, but as long as the economy continues increasing production, creating money--or credit--isn't a problem. And rmszucs1's point is correct: raising taxes on the wealthy is a vital part of solving SS solvency.

I'm sorry Adam, I'm glad you left the dark side but I just can't listen to you talk about the deficit and not own the major role that the then Republican party played in the creation of this problem. Tax cuts to the wealthiest 1% ( Excuse me. I have to take a break here to extinguish my hair on fire! ) and now who needs to pay for this? The poorest and most vulnerable Americans. Your messed up for profit medical system eats up more of your GDP than any country with Universal Healthcare. Your Welfare system is a disgrace. Your for profit prisons are quasi-criminal and nothing but a place to turn petty criminals into hardened criminals. The National Debt is not being created by poor people. It is being driven by the policies that favor the Super Wealthy over the average American. This is why we have ended up with a criminal like Trump. You need to look much deeper into your understanding of what creates wealth in a country. Kleptocracy, the credo of the Republican Party, means some people and their friends get very rich and everbody else gets by on the crumbs. You know as does Tim that dark money has rotted the political system from within. Until there is a thoughtful historic reform we will keep on falling into this morasse over and over again. Think before you advocate policies that will damage the fabric of American society even further. The poor are NOT the villains here. Think again!

The unintended downstream consequences of tarif wars are too numerous to list here. There are many ways in which the American manufacturing landscape would need to be restructured to compensate for the loss off producers of say microchips. This is one area where I actually think we might be better to have a robust domestic production but we would also have to be willing to pay a higher price for goods that rely on this technology. I know that for security reasons this is an area that the Biden administration is working on and investing in. It takes time however building the facilities and training the work force and creating a stable market for these products. I suspect more and more it will be important to develop these homegrown industries for reasons of national security. We learned this lesson during the pandemic.

I remember when in ‘70s the 18% interest didn’t stop any Republicans I knew from buying houses and muscle cars. We had gas rationing, it was inconvenient, yes but we knew it wouldn’t last forever. In WWII people were willing to do anything for our troops and the war effort. They knew like today, keeping Democracy was the only game in town. Sugar, flour, butter, chocolate, and other foods were rationed, so the troops could have what they needed. And gas was rationed too. Women learned to make airplanes. No silk stockings for women, sacrificed for silk needed for parachutes. Front yards were tilled for Victory Gardens. No whining like today. But we had a government totally backing what was needed for our troops. When we get a “working” not whining House and Senate again, then we can talk the money. No body seems too bothered about what Trumps whole administration stole from the Americans who needed it most. Republicans don’t mind running the deficit to the moon. Be fair Americans have had very little to work with on the other side. And the good Republicans that want to do their best work are treated like crap, threatened, and that is not right. Biden has done a great job so far, is he perfect? No, but he would never hand our country to our enemies.

I strongly disagree with this framing of the debt issue. The central problem is we've taken the effective federal tax rate for those at the top down from around 60 percent in Eisenhower's time to less than 20 percent now, while the effective tax rate for average Americans has gone up. There's literally no political space and no ethical space for average Americans to take a haircut on Social Security and Medicare -- none; they've already taken one in the shift from defined benefit private pensions to 401k/403b. People count on the Social Security base in retirement planning and are advised to do so when talking it over with firms like Fidelity, and it's the one safety zone they have from a system that has otherwise served as a massive incentive for corporations to cut ordinary peoples' pay and put all their eggs in the C-suite's basket. Taxes on the rich have to go up if the ship is to be righted; it will bring in significant extra revenue at the top (we've left $50 trillion on the table the last 50 years) and ideally incentivize corporations to redistribute their pay towards ordinary Americans and away from the C-suite, and then, and only then, can we realistically talk about something like increased contributions towards retirement security programs.

Thank you, Adam Kinzinger, you are 100% correct in saying that Trump set the USG up for failure in Afghanistan. We were never going to be able to pull out in an organized fashion. The Trump administration slow rolled the issuance of visas for Afghans that assisted the USG so no surprise why we had so many people that were left behind. His administration negotiated with the Taliban and left out the Afghan government and women through the whole process.

Let's set aside the reality that it is impossible to sustain your economic analysis without ignoring decades of accumulated evidence. (Since it is unlikely that it will ever be resolved.) The immediate question is why those who are looking at proposals that would cost lower and middle class incomes 20-25% think that business will just chug along as usual when millions of their consumers can no longer afford to buy anything but the barest of necessities. How does that seem like smart policy to them?

Hold on there now, inflation was out of control from feb 2021 to june 2022, but has been 3%, a totally acceptable number, since july 2022. There is a group of economists that think 4% is an optimal target. Inflation is not a problem now, it is the residual high prices that the mainstream media won't let go of, 2 years later. Social security is easy to solve, remove the cap and apply the 3% to all income. The top 1% won't miss the income and it will have the benefit of moving unused wealth from the top, to the middle, where it will grow the gdp. I know, this is a political impossibility, but it is how you should frame the problem.

There is a third alternative other than "lying" or "confused" although they both may be part of the toxic mix. The third alternative is "bullshit". He is unmoored from what is true. He couldn't care less about what it true and he has been doing it so long that he wouldn't know what's true if it walked up and slapped him repeatedly in the face. "On Bullshit" by Harry S Frankfurt is a great delineation of the difference. Bullshit is performative.
