Giant Wimp Donald Trump is all Talk! (w/ Jane Coaston) | Bulwark Podcast

Trump is not drawing support from black voters because of his criminality-that's just MAGA's bigotry of low expectations. Meanwhile, he's now promising a green card to every foreign Harvard grad to please tech bro donors. Plus, the attempt to create a race war over Caitlin Clark, the annoying liberals on the coasts are creating MAGA reactionaries, and more from the mailbag. Jane Coaston joins Tim Miller for the weekend pod.

When Trump came to Kansas City in 2016, where I live, he was terrified of having someone throw a tomato at him. "If someone throws a tomato, punch them in the face!" The cities in Missouri vote liberal but the state has been so gerrymandered with the rural that they are overwhelmed.

  • @DennisMoore664

It's a similar problem in way too many places. Texas, Ohio, and Florida are all good examples. The big cities are by and large more liberal than the rural parts but the rural parts are running the show and setting the conservative agenda for the state.

I want you to redeem yourself for that incredibly ignorant comment, but I have changed my mind about you for the time being. Seriously? Do you think over 70 means we are brain dead? To learn and be curious implies the ability to change one's mind. There will always be those of any age who stop thinking or caring. Stop buying into your own prejudices! Jane, I grew up in Ohio and I am much older than you, I remember Ohio being blue locally though we always had a Republican governor. My family worked in the local government. My Aunt was Mayor Sensenbrenners secretary. Those were the days when republicans and democrats would work together. Just saying.

I knew a mother who was agonizing that she was too slow getting her kids the Covid vaccine. That was when it first became available for children, and Covid hit town hard maybe 4 weeks later. A relative was similarly upset that she'd been too slow with her own vaccine and exposed Grandpa. The only person I know who actually skipped it, as opposed to dilly dallying, thinks she isn't subject to cause and effect.

I have some older clients who I know only see Fox News as their main information diet. I've found music to be the best way to connect - they know I'm a horrifying lefty, but when we talk XM Radio for example, they're blown away that I love and am very knowledgeable about music from the 40's through the 80's (and beyond). By finding that common connection, they see me as real, and vice versa, and we can have a better chance of discovering other commonalities.

I lived in New Zealand for 25 years and the pervasive conservatives values remain the fallacy and over arching opaqueness of neo-liberalism. There are many on the right who would have you believe that the Healthcare system and social security will ultimately have to be changed to a payer system. In many ways it is. What makes NZ unique is The ACC: The accident compensation commission. Is a taxpayer funded accident insurance. If you are injured anywhere: work, at home or playing sport you are covered.

As a New Zealander, I agree. We have the right wing party back in power and they have lowered taxes which only benefit the rich. They have cut services and benefits for those in need. The gap between rich and poor has got wider. They also want to do away with anything Māori in the government. The previous right wing party in power balanced the books but did not spend on infrastructure. The only thing our right wing party is, they will only hurt our country, Republicans in power under Trump will damage the whole world.

I find this assertion that people over 70 never change their minds highly annoying. I am 70 and I change my mind often, probably more than young people, and certainly more than I did when I was 20. My mother was the same way, and I know hundreds of elderly scientists who often change their minds. Perhaps this is my inclination, but it is also been my job for 50 years. In my line of work, computers, people who do not re-evaluate and radically change their approaches soon go out of business. Most computer companies from 1975 are gone. I have also changed my mind about Trump. I started off thinking he was a typical conservative New York businessman, then I thought he was a fool, and I now think he is a canny politician, and far more dangerous than I ever imagined. He is also becoming senile. My opinion of the GOP has changed radically since the Jan. 6 coup attempt. Let me ask: Do you have any social science based evidence that people over 70 do not change their minds? I know of studies that indicate they do. In the 1970s, elderly people changed their minds radically about sexual morality. A professor of anthropology I knew described a group of elderly people commiserating because their children and grandchildren married, instead of co-habiting for a while to see if they were sexually compatible. Another example are the attitudes toward religion and atheism. Atheism has become more common. It is 8% of the so-called "greatest" generation and 37% of boomers. Detailed studies show that same cohort of elderly people have become more atheistic even in old age. In other words, between age 65 and 85, the same generation of elderly people has changed and trended increasingly atheistic. They are not untouched by social trends common to the rest of society. The last example of old people changing their opinions is stark, and regrettable. Boomers of the Vietnam war era tended to be liberal. Starting in the Reagan administration, many of these people became more conservative, which is not unprecedented, although most previous generations stayed politically pretty much the same for their entire lifetimes. I believe the boomer generation has trended increasingly conservative, and even become radicalized MAGA followers, in their 70s and 80s. I assume they are influenced by talk radio and FOX news. I have not seen any social science research on that, but it seems likely. If you do not have statistics and social science research to support your assertions, I suggest you refrain from generalizing about people at a given age, or a generation. I have found that most assertions of that nature are incorrect.

II agree with almost everything you said and disagree with little of it, but... my 80+ year old parents have gone from avowed Republicans to Trump hating, honest to goodness liberals who talk back at their Sinclair owned local news. It truly baffles me, but my wife and I are thrilled by it. Family gatherings have gone from strained to fun. If anything my mother will ask if we've heard the latest this or that that Trump has done.
