The level of musicianship by YES was beyond most bands in the 70’s

I think what sent YES off into the creative stratosphere was Jon&Tony&Peter&Steve&Rick(&Bill?) being smart enough to realize that they really did need to build their sound around Chris' Industrial-Melodic Bass grooves. Sure, they were all super talented in their own rights & in other bands they might have stood out more (right Steve?), but they understood that they were creating something special when allowing Chris to be Chris in dominating their sonic output. YES: the band Chris Squire was able to put together to showcase his special talent to the music world (which included his vocal contributions)...

The version of this song on their live album “YESSONGS” is so worth listening to. True talented musicians!!!

Any other version is better than this. Keys to Ascension is probably the benchmark, Jons voice and the sound engineering overall on this are terrible!!!

I miss Chris. There was a lot to the man to miss other than just for the reasons I know of... Son, husband, father, friend and then my reasons... The consummate musician... bass player extraordinaire, harmony singer, lead singer, song writer, showman, all around great band leader and member. Each year that goes by i miss him more. He has had a huge impact on my life and his loss has made me appreciate even more what we had for all those years. His ecstatic bass playing in this song is such an incredible foundation. It sounds as fresh as the moment it was laid down all those years ago. I love you and miss you.

America features some of Howe's finest playing. I wore out the album Yesterdays when I was a kid. Of course, I had a backup cassette, or three 🤪

I normally do care for covers, but YES's America is incredible. Howe is amazing (when is he not?) Best cover I've ever heard of any song.

The interplay of guitar and bass between Steve Howe and Chris Squire on "America" is simply phenomenal. One of the criticisms of Yes, although I don't agree, is that the individual members can go off into their own worlds and not play together, but Howe and Squire on "America" show just how well they can they can.

It's not very often that we hear genuine POLYRHYTHMS from a rock group !!!!

What has always impressed me about Yes is that they can reproduce these songs note for note live! Listen to the masterpiece triple live album, Yessongs, to verify that! "Siberian Khatru" closes out an ESSENTIAL album of anyone's collection. The 1972 release, Close to the Edge, contains only 3 songs and each one is PERFECT! Maybe you're ready for the title track?? YES! 💜💜💜

Live it was even more of a scorcher than on the album. It was their opener for years. GOD they were great!

Chris Squire, Jon Anderson, Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman and Bill Bruford awesome in their individual as well as band.

It is an unalloyed delight to watch the youth of today enjoying the music of Yes. The ethereal vocals, the spectacular guitar and drums: most of all though the fact that the bass monster racing up and down the fretboard in a prog tornado had a streak of the dirty funk in him that just had to find its way out. Top work sir.

Siberia is in Russia. In Russian, "Da" means: "Yes". Towards the end of this song, they repeat the word "da" numerous times. "Da. Da-da da-da da-da (etc)". In effect, they are saying "Yes. Yes. Yes-yes yes-yes yes-yes (etc)". Pretty clever, you guys.

This song often gets overlooked. Not sure why. I think it’s one of their best. Gold stainless nail. Torn through the distance of man.

YES! Yes! This song is totally amazing. I first heard it way back in 1972 I think. OMG, I was in my friend's dorm room. He had AR speakers and an Advent turntable, and ... don't remember what amp. Well, I don't think digital is better than his system of long ago, and listening to this song was outstanding!

They could play this note for note live, phenomenal musicianship, really is perfection.

"Going For the One" is an often-overlooked Yes song now, but is a wonderfully complex gift for your ears.

60 year old white Progressive Rock Musician Here. I really respect and appreciate your reactions. For this reason I have a request for your reaction. Artist: Argent Album: Nexus Song: Music of the Spheres This is a deep cut. Very few know of this tune. But it changed my life at the age of 15. This band and song opened my musical world to Progressive Rock, to Yes and so many others. It ultimately inspired me to co-form a Progressive Rock Band. I would be forever grateful if you could do this. Lots of Keyboards! This one is out of the world too. I too was in a Marching Band playing Tenor Saxophone, I also studied Jazz......any hope..

You've got to check out "South Side of the Sky"

My recommendation for the next Yes song should be Sound Chaser. It features Patrick Moraz on keyboards. He brings a more jazzier feel to the album Relayer. It's a crazy, complex song that has a great guitar solo and a keyboard solo. Check it out!

I consider the three pillars of creative rock that came out of that true golden age of Rock music, mid 60's to later '70s are: Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Yes. You can't really compare them to each other, or pick one over the other, because they are so uniquely talented.

It's very cool watching you enjoy these great Prog classics. I've been into Yes' music for nearly 50 years and I still listen to them with a sense of wonder and amazement. If you're into cosmic music, like Close To The Edge, then I HIGHLY recommend another British Prog band, Van Der Graaf Generator. They don't feature guitars, like Yes, but instead center their compositions around dramatic vocals, heavy organs, complex jazz rock drumming and countless saxophones. The singer and principal song writer, Peter Hammill, is a bonafied genius. VDGG's music is very jarring, dark, complex and theatrical. It takes a few listens to "get" them, but once you do, you'll come to appreciate one of the finest bands in the history of modern music! Prog On!! ✌

On many occasions YES would open shows with this song and play an extended jam with Howe and the rest going off. Talk about monster way to kick off a concert!

Technical Expertise with one of the greatest gifted male vocalists in the world.

There are so many incredible bands from the 60s, 70s, and 80s, Some that you've mentioned, include Yes, Supertramp, Led Zeppelin. But among the progressive superstars, you have Yes, ELP, King Crimson and Genesis. A great introductory song for Genesis is "A Firth of Fifth," from Steve Hacket's Genesis Revisited at Royal Albert Hall," which you can find on KZread. Steve was the second and best known guitarist in Genesis, and this is a spectacular version of the song, and it features the late John Wetton (of King Crimson and Asia.) People will tell you to start of with "Supper's Ready," and that's their masterpiece, but to really appreciate it, you need to work your way up to it, and "A Firth of Fifth" is a great introduction to the band.

Siberian Khatru is the perfect fusion of classic, rock and jazz. I love classic, prog rock and fusion jazz like crazy but this song is a class of its own.

Though it sounds complex, I love this song for how it manages to achieve complexity from simplicity. I’ve played this on bass and guitar, and both instruments’ parts are made up from a handful of simple patterns and themes, which are combined in different ways using different keys and tempos.

It does my heart good to see a young person like yourself really enjoying music that I first started listening to in the mid '70's. YES quickly became my favorite group then and it has lasted a lifetime. You get it...and that's refreshing! There are certainly other great groups, but no one was like YES. Enjoy them all! Love the channel, keep it up.

One of my favorite Yes tunes, as is the whole album. You still need to react to Close to the Edge. Musical masterpiece. One of the first riffs I learned on guitar was Siberian Khatru. A high school friend of mine, who was also a gutar player, turned me on to Yes. He would listen to them and speaking of Steve Howe say " listen to that guy" and shake his head. All phenomenal musicians.

Keyboardist Rick Wakeman was jamming the harpsichord along with Steve Howe. That's the keyboard you were thinking about. BTW, once you play either Close to the Edge or Gates of Delirium, you will redefine the word masterpiece. Personally, I love Close to the Edge better, but they are both outright amazing and make you reconsider what rock music can be.

I used to have an 8 track (ask you granddad lol) in my car and this was never out of it ,till the tape snapped and then I fitted a cassette deck in the car. Guess what tape went straight into it ????

The very best version of this song is on side one of the triple live album "Yessongs", along with the very best version of "Heart of the Sunrise."

I installed a ferris wheel on top of my list. it's forever rotating. Where it stops, nobody knows. A different spot each day. But Yes has a couple of more seats on it then my other favorite bands.

And....try out "the clap" from "the yes album" some the most amazing acoustic guitar!

After you have experienced more of early Yes, PLEASE please listen to Yes's That That Is from the 1996 their album Keys To Ascension. This was their last truly prog-ROCK attempt before the band broke up. With emphasis on ROCK! You will not be disappointed.

When you get a chance listen to this from beginning to end. My favorite Yes album. I wore this out back then.

It is most YES fans #1 album, followed by Fragile, Relayer and The Yes Album.

It is wonderful to see this music being ‘discovered’ by younger generations. I bought the album in 1972 when I was 16. Back then it sounded to me like music from the future, it still does. Siberian Khatru has a sort of musical gravitas, its tempo, the use of lyrics as what some have called ‘sonic impressionism’...Most Yes ‘epics’ involve some kind of solo where Howe, Wakeman or whoever lets rip..but Khatru doesn’t have that, though they seem to find ways to show their viruosity within in short bursts..all driven along by the incredible Bill Bruford. Glad you enjoyed it Wilburn.

Some of their very late content only hits "solid but not amazing" but still 90% of their content is greatness.

Thank you. I'll think you'll LOVE "South Side of the Sky." And also--though I've said it before--LIVE versions of "Close to the Edge" absolutely KILL! There's footage of them doing it in 1975 that is my current favorite. It's long, but it's magisterial!

Awesome to discover something you love, no matter how old or important is to anyone else. I was so lucky to see them six times in the 70's. Chris Squire (RIP) has set the standard for the Rickenbacker growl. I bought one in '77. Still jammin on it. Keep up the good work.

Thanks reacting to this one. You have to hear the Yessongs version of Siberian Khatru sometime. It's live, and the energy, with venue ambience, makes that version so much better. NEXT....react to "And You And I" before you melt your face off with the title song of this album: "Close To The Edge".

This album is actually better played backwards, with Khatru as the energetic opener, &U&I as the breather, and close to the edge as the grand finale. I wish they would have made the album this way.

In many of their live sets Siberian is played before Close To The Edge, and it's always been like that in my playlists. I'd forgotten it was different on the original lp!

Much as I love Siberian Khatru it can't compare to the sound of LZ. This prog rock is clever and slick stuff but it doesn't have the heart and soul of LZ.

@@heliotropezzz333 All music is subjective. To me, Led Zeppelin can't hold a candle "musically" to YES. Led Zeppelin plays great music, but most of their music is basic blues. They just do it better than almost anyone, but the music of YES is complex, which is what Progressive Rock is all about. Sadly, the 80's killed Prog, cause bands tried to adapt instead of just keep playing what made them great. No clue why they all did that.

@@Lightmane Only the first 2 LZ albums are 'mainly blues' and even then they are a mix of blues, rock and invention. The Punk movement was basically anti prog rock and maybe pushed prog rock out in the 80s, though Pink Floyd sort of imploded on its own, as many bands do. All taste in music is subjective, I agree. Yes can't improvise live in the same way as LZ and for me their music lacks personality, personal expression and warmth. They are not such risk takers either.

@@heliotropezzz333 Yes, but Led Zep is known as a blues oriented rock band. They actually are somewhat Progressive too. The Rain Song and I'd also include Kashmir and Stairway even, along with several other tracks. Prog pushed itself out in the 80's as far as I'm concerned, but yes, Punk too

John McLaughlin (Guitar), Jan Hammer (Keyboards), Billy Cobham (Drums), Jerry Goodman (Violin)...That would be the "Mahavishnu Orchestra"...check out "Between Nothingness and Eternity" Live in Central Park. An amazing show for many reasons besides the impossibly great performances but the fact that it started drizzling during the beginning of the opening number and as the tune got heavier...so did the rain..what was cool was when the tune faded to the end the rain slowed...stopped..and the sun came out. Marvelous. This band is as inspiring as Yes though they are a fusion band.

I am always so disappointed that this song ends when it does! I could listen to that guitar and bass riff all day long!

Imo... YES is the greatest. I do love Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. My first concert was Emerson, Lake and Palmer 1977. I saw YES in 1978, 1986 and 2001. My favorite YES song is "Close to the Edge". I saw Supertramp in 1979. I also love TOOL, Dream Theater, The Mars Volta, Avenged Sevenfold, etc. Great job! Love your channel! 🔥🤘😎👍💯💕👏👏

Ladies and gentlemen Chris Squire and Yes the greatest show on earth.

Finally delving into possibly their best album. This is definitely their golden age straight up to the album Relayer. Their finest single album is certainly Yessongs the triple live album that was recorded during the tour for Close to the Edge. Amazing live versions. Funny my friends and I never compared Yes to Led ZEP. Not the same thing, not the same styles of musicianship, composition nor genre. Prog Rock is much more akin to long evolving pieces with classical influences and some jazzy improvs. Led Zep is mostly Blues based Hard Rock with a few disparate influences here and there.

Was waiting for you to hit this album, Chod! For years, Khatru was their show opener, led into by prerecorded warmup music from Stravinsky's Firebird Suite. You can hear/see this on their Yessongs live triple album. Like everyone, I encourage you to hit the rest of this album. Then you can blow the top of your head off with the Relayer album. Also can't wait for you to hit Awaken from the Going For The One disc. You're gonna have such a good time!

Trevor Horn, Buggles member who went on to produce 90125, joined Yes for the Drama album in 1980, along with Buggles' keyboardist, Geoff Downes, and the result is indescribable! I think part of Yes’ appeal was that they wanted to make music that THEY found interesting and tried to bring the rest of us along for the journey. Which of course requires unparalleled musicianship.

If you want some more "out of the world" music, Yes keyboard player Rick Wakeman with his current band The English Rock Ensemble has a new prog album: The Red Planet. All of the tracks were inspired by geographic (aresgraphic?) features on Mars. Very timely with the landing of the Perseverance rover last week. Check out the video for "Ascraeus Mons" (a volcano). Highly recommended.

Huge Zepp fan. Different style. Yes rules. Just all the tempo changes alone. Another level.

Zeppelin is like a fighter jet and YES is like a luxury jet. Both are bad-ass. Just depends on your mood on a given day. (But we do tend to indulge in luxury as time goes on and we get older and wiser)

Wow, and you have so much more of YES' best compositions ahead of you! *Close To The Edge* the song is probably their best _complete_ epic creation overall. Here's a list of what I consider some of the absolute best of YES that you haven't reviewed yet (besides CTTE): *Gates of Delirium* *South Side of The Sky* *America* *Tempus Fugit* *Silent Wings of Freedom* *Sweet Dreams* *I'm Running* *Machine Messiah* Of course, all of these feature Chris Squire's amazing bass playing as a highlight, especially *America.* Enjoy!

Zep and Yes are 2 different pillars holding up the same roof. One may be he the fore fathers of metal with one of the best rock band member ensemble ever put together pound for pound. Yes was the epitome of prog rock and high music values in rock for their time ahead of their time... top tier musicians . Comparing the 2 is like comparing a Ferrari to a Mustang both will get u there but ur gonna feel different when u arrive.

Siberian Khatru got slower and slower as Yes performed it live through the years . I laughed at myself once and said if the the tempo of this song gets any slower I'm going to get out and walk

I saw yes in New York at the Jones Beach theater they had a full orchestra I had seats nice road dead center and they opened up close to the yard after they finished everybody still up for at least 10 minutes because we were all blown away and Stone I agree with what you said about yes absolutely phenomenal my other favorite band I hope you check out I said something before it’s Emerson Lake And Palmer tarkus And by the way when I saw you said Jones Beach theater it was September 7, 2001 wow who would’ve thought God bless you young man because I’m 67 years old and I’ve been listening to them for 51 years irruption looking mind-boggling thank you very much

I'm 64 I saw yes in 197D7 maybe in the round and i can tell you this song and every other song is so much better live. That's why I recommend you take the time and listened to the whole yes songs compilation and then you get it. Yes was so far ahead of their time. Another one to listen to is Wishbone Ash live dates. Unbelievable music.

SPEECHLESS HUH? Thank you my Brother, I first saw YES in 72 at 16 during their CTTE concert but was a disciple a year earlier. From then til now CTTE is still THE GREATEST MODERN MUSIC SONG OF ALL TIME but they didn't stop there. Comparable is their next two albums whereby creatively they pushed us even closer to that EDGE but being the masterstroke that sent YES completely into the stratospheres, the CTTE album will always be their definitive best. We experienced them LIve at the highest levels of expanded consciousness being that it was still the post 60's 1970 psychedelic era so it never ceases to remind me of those blessed glory daze when YES were in their transcendent prime musically. It's always wonderful in these times to see a Brother who gets it! It wasn't as rare back in the day when music styles of all types were more diverse, popular & innovative. Still YES were so groundbreaking that they were the elite within the Prog Rock category while remaining outside the box of the Pop genre mainstream. So welcome Trooper aboard the YES Starship where astral travellers like you & I head off towards the heart of the sunrise. (referencing some of their earlier songs) NOW YOU HAVE TO HEAR THE NEXT TWO MASTERPIECES and it will be your BEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME!

so the last album in the sequence of more and more technical albums from Yes is Relayer. The song on Relayer that plays kind of the same role on that album as Siberian Khatru does on Close to the Edge is Sound Chaser... it will blow your mind... in a good way :)
