The initial choral piece was brought to the group by Avi, who had sung it with a prior group. It was added to give Kevin time to put away his cello from the prior song. During Avi's solo, Mitch & Scott moved closer to Kirstie, and Kevin came onstage next to Scott. It's too bad we never get to see Kevin, but you can certainly hear all the crazy beats and whooshes and rattles he is doing. I saw them in concert, and when Avi hit those really low notes, the whole place shook!

I've watched 2-3 other videos from that concert, taken by that same person, and if feels to me like she just has no interest in showing Kevin. Throughout this song, we know he's onstage, but she never pans over to show him, not once, and it happens in several other songs as well. I'm obsessed with this performance of Aha!, and they did amazing work on other songs in the concert, including putting down their individual mics and gathering around one single mic to sing a Christmas song, which was amazing (and we get to see Kevin from the back.) But I'm not really interested in watching the other videos from this person just because she seems to be ignoring Kevin, and I don't appreciate that. Have you looked at those videos? Did you notice the same thing?

@@LoriPeace I've often wondered about that. This song would be so much less epic without Kevin's beatboxing. It bugged me so much that I searched for another video of this performance and found one with Kevin standing right next to Scott, but now I can't find the link. If the person recording this had only showed his elbow or something, we wouldn't feel the need to explain every time that he is there!

@@LoriPeace It took me a while, but I found it! The video is named "Shaun Chew First of June", which was the day of the concert in 2015. There is a LOT of extra stuff here, but it's kind of fun to watch parts of the concert. At 9:30 they are doing Papoutai with Kevin playing the cello (very cool graphics). Then, at 9:47 it jumps to the choral part before Aha!. You can see Mitch and Scott move over and Kevin comes onstage. The whole clip is only about 10 seconds, but it helped me envision Kevin up there. 🤩Here's the link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lKGN17ebkayxodo.html

According to reports it was after this that they started carrying their own sound equipment to cope with Avi's bass. It is something acapella bands have learned to do to avoid this because the venues don't know how to cope. And yes Avi was trained in opera and the guy can really project his voice. The rest of the story seems to be Mitch drinking Red Bulls to cope with jet lag just before the performance. This is the only recording of this show. The official video is quite different. Great reaction to the most epic "you should have been there" moment of this band 🙂

Doing all the syncopated background parts is hard to do in a studio environment where you can do it over and adjust things electronically in mixing. The difficulty of doing this live is about a 20 on a scale of 1 to 10. Crowd noise, sound delays (just a fact with sound traveling through cords and wi-fi) the adrenaline of being in front of a crowd, and anything else that can happen live, this is a whole other level talent and discipline. If any of them get off track or off beat doing this song it could turn into a train wreck in a hurry. I don't think there are too many people, outside of these special five, that could do this and do it that well.

Then the caffeine hits and Mitch goes hyperactive and no one is paying attention to anyone but Mitch, but Avi is still there, still singing low notes into a microphone, and merrily blowing out speaker after speaker.
