Amazing to think Paul Eddington was very ill whilst they made this ad. He had skin cancer from 1987, and he fought it bravely.

He had the cancer from at least 1956. The ad is from 1989, so he wasn't particularly ill at the time.

@@chriswatson7965 it got worse and noticeable around '86-'87. You can notice when you learn that the later years of "Yes Prime Minister" were written to have Eddington seated as much as possible. In fact, Eddington is seated in this ad.

Funny enough the guy who played D.C.Jones in Minder Michael Povey in an interview was very critical of Paul Eddington when he guested in Minder. Its on a podcast on the net... Just goes to show.....

Technically it's not the characters it's just the actors - Paul clearly says "Derek". But yes, obviously an homage to the show, I can't imagine the Beeb were very happy.

Not the first time BBC actors have appeared in an advert though - John Le Mesurier and Arthur Lowe appeared in an advert for Cadbury's Wispa, and Arthur and Ian Lavender appeared in one for Barclay's Bank which was almost a sequel to Dad's Army. However I think once the series has ended, there is very little the BBC can do about it as the actors are no longer under contract.

Interestingly, apart from one episode of Minder, Paul had no TV work between Yes Prime Minister ending in 1988, and The Camonmile Lawn in 1992 (possibly due to his health) so can't really blame him for taking this for some income. Maybe Derek just agreed to be in it to help Paul out.

It is clear from the ad that Eddington was doing it representing himself and not the Yes Minister character, and that he agreed to the ad because it was his favourite coffee. I'm less certain of Fowlds ethics.
