I think it is suffice to say Sir Humphrey, PM Hacker and Bernard are all crucial to the show and that it would not be as good if any one of them is absent

Jonothan Lynn said that when writing the scripts they would often put a note by a Hacker line that said: 'Paul doesn't have to say this, he can just do it with his face.' Tremendous confidence in the actor. I imagine the example you've given was such a case. Derek Fowlds was right I think: Hawthorne won the BAFTAs because he got longer speeches but Eddington was brilliant as well.

Eddington deserved it! God knows how the judges panel was chosen during those years

Nigel Hawthorne is concidered to be a better actor than Paul Eddington, but Paul had his moments of glory as well. This is one of them. Another one is when he is told that the former Prime Minister is dead. Absolutely amazing. Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister is, by far, the finest TV-show. No one will ever create anything better.

I don't know who this is that considers Hawthorne a better actor, but in my opinion Paul Eddington is every bit as good as him

Eddington is the better actor in Yes Minister and Yes PM. The Bafta award is truly meaningless

They are both great, just sir Humphrey is a part with way more room for amazing performances

I'd forgotten how good this show is. I must be a regular visitor here for sure.

Ha, yes me too. I was wondering wht they don't show reruns of this series and it dawned on me that it is too much like real life and is still relevant to todays world. Even after 30 years.
