YES, KAREN. PLANTS REALLY DO GROW IN SAND.

Speaking truth to ignorance means tearing down fantasies. Our hobby is awash in fantasies. The best way to test a fantasy is to challenge it with proof. Prove sand cannot support plants. Put it to the test. Here are some plants with roots growing in sand. Proof!

Wonderful Father Fish nature teaches and we must always take inspiration from natural environments, it is a life that I use sand in my aquariums even before the appearance of modern funds. The plants grow well in the sand and it is evident, I have visited many natural tropical environments of both fish and plants from Central America to Africa to Southeast Asia and in the various biotopes that are rivers, lakes, streams, plants live in a sandy, clayey or silt bottom. Excellent practical explanation with your tanks and plants, I wish you a happy Christmas and a happy new year to you and the whole family. Marco

Life revolves around economics; somebody has to lie and steal money if the hobby is to continue. Most products are not essential or not needed at all in the aquarium hobby. How much money would be lost if most aquarium hobbyists had a deep sand bed? I have been singing this song for years.

  • @nicolero8130

for designs like iwagumi or Dutch the sand bed can not be used. So the only solution for these popular landscapes is expensive external filters and co2 systems. For sand bed planted aquarium the light is still needed to be purchased. sponge filter can save money. Sponge instead of external filter.

Plants don't necessarily care about the substrate, it's about nutrients and water (Ph, which substrate can effect). That's why plants can grow without substrate (Hydroponics). Also most people don't understand that their is a symbiotic relationship between microbes in a substrate and the root system. Plant roots don't uptake nutrients directly from soil/substrate, they need beneficial microbes to break it down for the roots to utilize. Plants cultivate - essentially farm - microbes around root tips by secreting sugars, proteins and vitamins. The microbes lose their cell walls, become trapped in plant cells and reactive oxygen breaks down some of the microbe cells, effectively extracting nutrients from them. Microbes leave the root hairs at the growing hair tip, where the hair cell wall is soft, and microbes reform their cell walls as they reenter soil. The microbes acquire nutrients in the soil and the process is repeated over and over

I remember the first time someone told me plants won't grow in sand. And I flashed back to one of my favorite spots as a kid. Slightly beyond the waters edge, feet buried in sand, looking down into the long blades of what we called eel grass and the small fish darting around kicking up....sand. I'm also sure that the beach was dredged up sand from the area too.

I find that my plants root and spread much easier than they do in my eco complete. My 40B with blue dream neocaridina, yellow tiger endlers, and hillstream loaches is packed wall to wall, floor the ceiling with rotala and dwarf sagitarria. So much so, that I'm going to have do a major overhaul soon.

A lot plants stem rot off from the new tank but if I trim the rot off and replant them in the 2 year old tank and they thrive and regrow roots.

This has convinced me that the 10 gallon I'm getting ready to setup will be sand. I can buy a whole bag of pool filter sand for $10. Then I'll have more money for plants. Although, I really need to hurry up and get a bag since it's seasonal around here.

Right now I am setting up another shrimp tank in a small tank and all I use is mud from the bottom of one of my ponds, clay from deep in my organic garden and a layer of sand on top. I put some rotting bark and leaves in and a bit of crushed coral for the calcium and planting it up and the shrimp are going to go mad in there haha. @Alpha Centauri I don't have citation because I don't read special literature on this subject. like many other hobbyists I listen to more experienced people in fish keeping. From a breeder with 50 years of experience I heard that about sand and his recommendation was 2-3 inches of small gravel bed. He's been breeding thousands of fish for all his life in such conditions. However gravel was not good for me because I wanted to grow demanding plants. So I started to look for nutritive substrates and found walstad. Walstad didn't work because it made water foul and full with brown algae, no plants could live in that, and of course no snails or fish. Then I found Father Fish with sand-soil beds and now it works quite perfectly.

How can authorities who have decades of practical fish keeping be wrong all the time, it's impossible. I do provide the prove, but it's just not what you want. Scientific data is a prove today. Tomorrow may be another data. So in terms of prove, is it really a prove. You want data, I personally don't have it. i can't provide you what you want, but I do have my prove. You can even see a big bubble and lots of small bubbles come up in this video. They simply are not in the water column long enough and the oxygen in the aquarium reaches with hydrogen sulfide and eliminates their toxin effects. www.toppr.com/en-in/ask/question/what-type-of-chemical-reaction-does-the-reaction-belong-tohydrogen-sulphide-gas-reacts-with-oxygen/

I'm in the process of figuring out the substrate in my new tank, and I've been very concerned if the plants I want in the tank will be healthy and grow in sand. I've heard plants will develop weak root systems and ultimately fail because sand doesn't offer the same characteristics as soil or gravel. But from what i've learmed, as long as they get the nuitrents they need, sand is a beautiful natural aesthetic that works just as well as a gravel or soil substrate. So thank you for disproving these myths. You're awesome and look great in the Santa Hat. Keep em coming!

Plants with small roots grow slowly at first. Two pair of new leaves in a month. The leaves are very healthy. But when the roots reach the lower sand, the plant grows amazingly fast. however, floating plants and plants that do not require ground, grow very well.

I haven't heard that plants can't grow in sand, though I have heard that they have more difficulty growing in sand than in dirt or gravel because the sand compacts. Because aquatic substrate plants tend to prefer anaerobic conditions, I'm guessing the issue is that compacted sand is more difficult for roots to push through and the fine sand limits the contact between the roots and the mulm.

I have to also add that as far as terrestrial plants go, we have heavy clay soil and sand is one of the best things you can use to break up clay. That said, the above water and below water situations are quite different, and clay that remains very wet cannot compact as well as sand.

As someone who has grown plants in sand, I agree. I didn't even bury them. I just set them on top, and they rooted into it. Because sand is good for them to root into as opposed to gravel with lots of open gaps. Me, I wanted the best of both. When I redid my tank, I did 1/3 creek gravel, 1/3 black aquarium sand, and 1/3 regular sand. It's working so far and has a nice color to it.

Sand, in fact is the best potting media/soil for terrestrial plants because it promotes vigorous root system. Terrestrial Plants grow best in sand till the media gets water from time to time. Even without added nutrients. Though top dressing with some compost is advisable. It just that sand makes the pot very heavy.

Getting a 55 gallon aquarium with sand and full of Dwarf Sagittaria and Vallisneria, but I can't find a definitive answer for the best sand for a planted tank. What type of sand would you recommend? Thinking about Black Flourite Sand and Black Sandblasting Sand (though not sure if Black Sandblasting Sand would damage a Twig Catfish or not). They'll be dirt under the sand - regular plant dirt you get from stores. (can't access a beach or stream for sand, too).

one of my shrimp tanks produces it's own co2 it is mostly just a clay substrate and a bit of sand on top I did not know what I was doing when I set it up it was just an experiment and it worked out the plants grow well the clay soil is heavy and stays down and stays settled i added a bit of sand on top but the roots have gone through it so much its matted and solid you can't barely pull plants out. The shrimp reproduce faster than any other tank and the plants always have oh what do they call it oxygen bubbles all over them I see little bubbles of gas come up now and then but it does no harm to the shrimp and they are very sensitive. I add no c02 and the plants grow the way you see plants grow like in c02 tanks the reds come out, they have thick full growth just basic LED lights.
