In this video we are going to be taking a look at the big question of can you grow aquarium plants in sand?
As with many things online it's percieved that the only way to grow aquarium plants is to use a soil substrate but for some this might not be an option especially if you have already spent lots of money on a sand substrate only to uplift it all and start again so that's what we will be talking about today, how to grow aquarium plants and my top tips to try for better success.
Enjoy!

I've never had any problems growing any type of plants in sand (other than land plants on land hydroponics aside) If you go to most creeks or natural bodies of water, the plants there are growing in sand. Where most people make the mostake with planting in sand is planting too soon, you need to allow time for that sand to act as a natural filtration layer, collecting and trapping natural detritus and waste from your fish before putting plants in the soil, then BOOM the plants take off. You did have some wonderful helpful tips in here though, so thank you!

I just wanna ask cause I have both I put the soil first, and then I locked it in with the sand. I’m trying to figure out how to do aquarium grass with a full tank.

How do you anchor a new plant into fine sand so it dosn’t float to the top of the tank?

Attach them to a small plastic disc. Just cut the disc out of anything thin really. Then bury the disk to the bottom of the tank.

I am planning on adding dwarf hair grass to my sand and gravel mix substrate. Will it thrive in it and are there any tips for hair grass in particular?

How does flow effect plant growth?

  • @MrBrightfryed

Helps ensure nutrients are distributed better around the aquarium, also the same for CO2. Areas with low flow might not get as much of these items which could inhibit plant growth.

@@MrBrightfryed so what is ideal flow rate out the box?

@@davidbarnett8199 Depends on the filtration or pumps you have, I'm not hardcore obsessed with flow like many aquascapers but in my experience I'd say just ensuring that there is good circulation around the tank will help regardless, you'd easily notice the areas say for example CO2 wasn't getting to by how the bubbles move around the aquarium or tell by how well the growth/colouration is on plants which are being affected by good flow compared to those in dead spots.
