'Yes, I'm Irish': Meet Jeff Keogh

Jeff Keogh was born into a mother and baby home in 1965 - ‘having a black child in Ireland at the time might have been a heavy scene’, he told us - and while growing up in Ireland wasn’t always easy, he says his experience was mostly positive.
We spoke to Jeff as part of ‘Yes, I’m Irish’, a video series focusing on the experiences of mixed-race Irish people. Watch the full series here: bit.ly/YesImIrish

I'm about this guy's age and I had to do that once - for locking another kid's bike to a fence at the swimming pool and running away. I feel as if it was a common form of discipline at that time, but that may just be because my Dad made me do it. And he only had to make me do that one time.

Went to Ireland for the first time in 2021. One of the first people I spoke to was a young black man. He looked like he just got off the boat from Zambia. He had the strongest Irish accent! I must admit that surprised me. He was so nice and helped me call a cab since my phone wasn't working and there are NO public phones in Dublin Airport. I wish I could have bought him a pint but we both had places to go. Thanks again kid! 😊

My husband is dark skinned and my children mixed race and we have taught them not to tolerate any racist comments. I am Irish and I can say from my experience if a racist comment has been made around me or my friends it would not be tolerated. I understand the hurt of "you're not really black" causes as my husband experienced such comments in spain and I hated to hear it as my children are half ecuadorian.
