Yeonpyeong Island, Looking into North Korea from South Korea (11km,

Ойын-сауық

Yeonpyeongdo, or Yeonpyeong Island, is a South Korean island just 11 kilometers from North Korea. It is situated very close to the Northern Limit Line (NLL, the maritime North-South Korean border) and has had a tumultuous history, with conflicts in 1999, 2002, and 2010.
Because of its location, all the islands around you belong to North Korea, and there are designated spots & observatories to peer into North Korean life.
You can visit it as a fun weekend out of Seoul. It's definitely different from a simple visit to the blue huts at the DMZ (Panmunjom) that everyone goes to. This island is a nice glimpse into more traditional and peaceful South Korean life.
🧳 I joined this tour as part of Koryo Tours' 'North Korea from a Distance' tour that follows the North-South Korean border from West to East, as well as visiting Yeonpyeong Island. Any questions about the tour post them below! It's led by my good friend and colleague Greg and other North Korean experts. More info 👇

Thank you! I'm still editing the one for next week... it'll go from east to west (or maybe west to east..!) along the border in SK!

Interesting video, thanks. Especially since relations between them are getting ever worse it seems and the increase in military drills from N Korea I'd imagine this place would be particularly unnerving to visit at this time.

Nice to see new content from your channel. I've only been to the DMZ from the South side and Dandong, China. Looking forward to more videos of these other places where one may view the DPRK, that is not on the typical travel itinerary.

That area is a place where military conflicts occur frequently because the border is not determined. So, the last administration decided to set that area as a peace zone and have joint fishing operations between North and South Korea, but it was all canceled. This is because the current regime is governed by forces that hate North Korea and seek to suppress it by force.

Remember how many times North Korea has attacked the island

@@phambinhan17 Remember how the US and South Korean troops provoked North Korea by firing shells around the island. Let us remember that although North Korea clearly warned of military action, our government ignored it and conducted military training in the Yeonpyeong Island area. At the time, the government did not even warn civilians to evacuate. North Korea bombed military facilities on Yeonpyeong Island. The civilian dead was a worker at a military base. It was the consideration of the sauna owner, not the Korean government, to protect its citizens and allow evacuation facilities.

Usually I wouldn't visit somewhere with military conflict like Yeonpyeongdo but it does seem interesting

Would this island be a reasonable place to visit for a person who knows absolutely no Korean ? The signage all seems to be in Korean, and a rural sleepy fishing village might have essentially no foreign language speakers.

Very good point, you won't find any English around, but help is never too far away from a local Korean! Typically anywhere outside of the main tourist attractions in South Korea are also like this.
