Trip to Changbaishan on North Korean Border (Pt. 2, Paektusan, West Peak)

Ойын-сауық

Part 2 of my Changbaishan trip.
This goes to the West Peak. It is supposedly a better view of Tianchi, a bit more of a hike, and fewer tourists. Fewer tourists is true, but my visit was during pretty grim weather and I don't think the view from both is that different. Would recommend North Peak for ease of travel!
A couple of weeks ago I went to China to visit Changbaishan in China on the North Korean border. In Korean, this mountain is called 'Paektusan' and is sacred across the Korean Peninsula (in both North and South Korea).
- VISITING
Changbaishan is the name of an airport, a train station, a mountain range, a township, a city, and a mountain range park. So, visiting can be a little tricky trying to navigate all the information.
To get to the mountain range park, you will need tickets (see below). The rest of the place, you don't need any special ticket. You can visit the different slopes - but the North is the most popular and easiest to navigate.
I visited off-peak, but this place turns into an absolute winter wonderland during the peak of winter, and it's a great place for skiing, too. And very cheap. If you can, go during this time - but be aware that the amount of tourists per day is limited so you will need to book tickets in advance to get into the Changbaishan park area.
Give yourself all day for each slope. There's a lot going on and you can make the most of your trip. 3 days 2 nights is perfect to get the most out of your stay, but you could easily stay longer.
- TAXIS
Be prepared to use taxis to get around as public transport isn't great, but taxis in China are VERY affordable. Note - due to the small nature of the city you may have to get your hotel to call a taxi for you as some apps might not find any.
- STAY
I stayed in Erdaobaihe which is convenient for the North Peak, located just a 10 minute taxi journey away from the park entrance. You can also consider staying in Wanda for skiing.
- TICKETS & BOOKINGS
I'd really recommend using Trip.com for ANY hotel and bookings in China. (not sponsored but you won't find much on the normal apps)
Tickets - you can buy tickets from the official website (link below) but it is all in Chinese AND I think only accepts WeChat or Alipay payments. You can also book through the official WeChat account (again you need WeChat or Alipay payment). You have to fill in your real passport details etc at the time of booking.

You do NOT need to book in advance for off-peak times. There was hardly anyone there when I went - but also I wouldn't recommend risking it. Book in advance if you can, or ask a Chinee friend to help you.
In part 2, I'll visit the West Peak and some other places, too!

Nice hot springs - Baekdusan's volcanism must be not completely dormant. Have you seen hot springs on the North Korean side of the border?
