Yellow River Drag Strip Sunday December 19th 2021

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Former Yellow River Drag Strip almost 53 years after the March 2nd 1969 Crash that killed 12 and injured over 40 has been a mobile home/RV site now for most of that time. A "Funny Car" dragster named The Dixie Twister driven by Houston Plat went off the track and into the crowd at an estimated 150mph. The driver deployed a parachute to slow the car but it did not help. About 40 years after the crash the car was located in Nova Scotia Canada

No you kind of got the cause of the wreck misconstrued. It's said that the parachute DID open but some moron was trying to retrieve something off the track (supposedly a dropped can of beer) and got caught up in the parachute. He caused the parachute to snag, pulling at the car and making the driver turn uncontrollably into the crowd. My mother has been talking about this tragedy for over 40 years. She was around 14 when this happened. She was Born and raised in Covington, Ga near Snappy Shoals Creek area. She's been telling stories about that day for years. I'm supposedly named after one of the responding EMTs that she was "friends" with, who responded that day. According to her story.

You forgot to mention that less than a month after he killed 12 people (the youngest being a 3 year old Child) Platt had another Dixie Twister Funny Car and was racing again.

I wonder how many people that live there know the history of the dragstrip or if they know it was even a dragstrip at one time??? Some friends of mine were there but luckily they were near the starting line and weren't hurt. They said they'd never forget that day

I think that most probably know about it just because of how people talk. I drove by there that day helping my brother n law move before going into the Army but did not go in.

@@rcmcrmc I wouldn't bet on that. I lived there and never knew it at the time. I only learned about it around 2-3 years ago.

I live out this way but never heard of the place. When I first noticed your video, I thought you might be talking about the raceway next to it (I-20)!

I’ve always heard about the dragstrip but never knew exactly where it was. One thing though, that mobile home park floods like crazy after a heavy rain.

Yes, the RV park is right next to the river and very low there. Joe South also had a song about that place. "Don't it make you you wanna go Home"

I lived in that MHP back in 89/90 and didn't know the history until I talked to someone in Watkinsville about 2-3 years ago. During the time we lived there, there was a terrible storm and some idiot left his garbage can lid loose and took out about 1/4 of our skirting. Also, the Gold Dome (aka the Ga Capitol Building) was being worked on and the steeplejacks doing the work stayed in the part of the RV park fronting I-20
