I was so anxious about the Age of Resistance and the whole "please, please don't let this suck" then watched it and was knocked senseless for the extent of the show... the fact that they used CGI so, just enough, to aid with bringing the little twitches to the puppets (eyes, and mouth motion) or complete green (or in this case purple) screen to create beauties like Lore just took my breath away at every moment. It was glorious, puppets are at my heart but, I never went into manufacturing them as, locally, there is "no money in it" I am thinking that now as a facsimile of an adult I should reinvestigate that love and see if I can do it, even if it is just as a "hobby" as my creative side years to bring my inner mind to life (My inner mad scientist has a mighty NEED to enthusiastically ask Igor to "THROW THE SWITCH")

It's funny and revealing that people are blown away at being so emotionally engaged by puppets in Age of Resistance. All animated films, whether hand-drawn, CGI or stop-motion, are even more artificial than films using puppets, but we're more accustomed to seeing those forms of animation, and being moved by them, than we are by puppets. But the power of puppeteering is every bit as emotionally captivating, if not more so. I cried so many times during Age of Resistance at the depth of feeling on display. As well as being a stunning, politically conscious, grand fantasy of the highest order, hopefully the greatest achievement of Age of Resistance will be in bringing back into wider consciousness the true potential of this artform.

Dark Crystal has changed my aestethic forever... And I totally agree on adding puppetry to larp, it would add just another layer of awesome! Actually last summer, I went to a larp where one of the players brought an owl puppet. It was their familiar, and if the owl decided that she liked you, she would perch on your shoulder and nibble on your ears. It was amazing. I knew it was a puppet, but it felt as if there was actually an owl on my shoulder!

I definitely agree about puppets in larp. The few times I’ve seen them it transforms the whole larp, it’s the most immersive device I think there is. The dragon at Bothwell was so beautiful to see just through a screen. And the dragon at Contera was so important to me as a player within that faction I can’t describe it in a comment. Even as much as I criticize the chapter of DR I was in, I will always be in awe of the Mothra puppet they commissioned, it was 20 ft long and had to be operated by multiple people, and it had tons of green LEDs at night...it was the biggest environmental threat I’d ever seen, just seeing it over the hill with a glowing cult of followers trailing behind it

I remember watching Dark Crystal for the first time when I was 5 year old and I fell in love with the fantasy genre. My sister was scared of the puppets though, I thought the Gelflings were beautiful. I was really excited too when they released Age of Resistance. When I was growing up, I felt like I never really fit in either.

I for one am absolutely delighted to finally see puppeteering, practical effects and that level of artistry being injected back into the popular consciousness! Dark Crystal: AoR was much needed. I don't know if you've ever read His Dark Materials, but it's a British book series by Philip Pullman set in a world where every human also has a daemon, the physical embodiment of their soul in animal form. If that sounds familiar, The Golden Compass movie was adapted from these novels, but didn't really do them justice - they changed a lot of crucial plot elements. I mention this because HBO's upcoming His Dark Materials show (coming out Nov 3rd!!!) actually made extensive use of puppeteering while on set for the daemons. Despite the final daemons being rendered in CGI, hearing the actors talk about the relationship between themselves and the puppeteers, and how crucial that was to portraying their character - seeing as it's the character's relationship with their own soul - just highlighted for me the importance of practical effects and their presence on set. The actors would have never been able to have that dialogue if the daemons were just CGI, or if the puppeteers were not allowed their own artistic freedom. Sorry to go on a long rant about HDM - your love for The Dark Crystal reminds me a lot of my love for these books. If you're interested in a compelling fantasy adventure with a varied cast of incredible characters - and the most kickass female protagonist - then I'd highly recommend His Dark Materials.

so idk what happened this year. but I have simultaneously lost myself and found something that I wish to create. that feeling of inspiration is in part due to the new dark crystal series. as well as going back to the basics, aka watching things I've not thought about in a very long time. idk what it is about movies and shows like this but I feel like they some how change things. I really wish more things like the dark crystal where made.

I was baffled and ticked off when Netflix chose not to renew _The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,_ but the good news is: PUPPETS DON’T AGE! (or as you put it: puppets are freedom!) so, so long as I live, I’m going to hope someone else-or perhaps Netflix themselves?-picks the series back up for a second run sometime, if not in one or two years then perhaps in fifteen or twenty…

2:03-2:24 Story of my life. My dad got a subscription to the disney channel before I was 2 years old and taped the dark crystal which premiered on it in 2000 sometime, and somehow thought it was a brilliant idea to show it to his toddler (me) who loved it and watched it over and over and over. Trying to explain my love for the dark crystal to those who a) thought it was incredibly scary or b) had never heard of it before, was frustrating and I don't understand how people cannot see the beauty in the puppets, especially Kira, who my older sister and I idolised and would run around pretending to be gelfling with beautiful wings.

I can’t even fully express how deeply the Dark Crystal shaped me. It was my favorite movie from 2 years old forward. Every other kid was absolutely terrified while I would sit cross legged whilst happily and LOuDLY chanting along with the Mystics/UrRu and fawning over Kira. It made my heart so happy that someone else used her their standard of beauty. Gelfling glam is the only way~ Basically I’m just so glad I wasn’t the only weird kid in a fairy costume every other day chasing after these stunning fantasy worlds and grumbling “don’t know, dooon’t know” in my best Aughra voice at anyone unfortunate enough to ask me a question. Please keep on being you, because seeing videos like yours make me feel confident enough to live my dorky little fantasy loving life more openly

Watching you bare your goblin soul regarding the Dark Crystal made me feel less alone in the universe. I had similar feelings about the original Dark Crystal, The Neverending Story, and even Fraggle Rock on some levels... little me was 100% convinced that fantastical intelligent creatures could exist in the walls or the woods or the simple unknown spaces just outside the edge of our vision. Anyhow, I just wanted to show my appreciation for that moment of recognition. You are truly a kindred soul and I suspect I'm not alone in saying that. Thank you.

I cannot express how much I loved this video, holy Gilmore! I, too, grew up loving puppetry. Germany (where I grew up) has a wonderful Marionette theatre that produce movie adaptions of popular children's novels and I watched those until the VHS's and DVDs broke... I also watched Dark Crystal that age (honestly... from about 4 to... today really) and yeah, I loved Kira too. I dreamed of looking like her when I grew up and all that! Gosh, I'm so glad I'm not alone on this! Dark Crystal was also the thing that pushed me forward to going to a school where I could learn puppetry, puppet-making and marionette-playing. So... yeah, as a puppeteer and lover of puppetry productions, I am so appreciative of this video here. Puppet love all the way!!! I sometimes feel like puppetry has lost its importace - and then I stumble about things like this video, and... I HAVE NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE HOW THANKFUL I AM! Sorry for writing-yelling... Thank you, like, so much. So much puppet love!!! Also, Puppets in LARP? Yes. Yesyesyesyesyes please! I haven't seen it yet so far, and haven't even thought of bringing my puppets to a LARP myself... but now I do!

Ahhh! Yes we have felt (pun slightly intended) the siren call of larp prop puppeting, making our prop monsters into more complicated works to a point where we now need to tell players that every prop monster is an untested prototype. ents and trolls and a beholder, I want to keep pushing the boundaries to immerse players however we can. the secret to what we've built was using camping backpack frames as the "base building block" to shape the monsters and are now working on modular designs to swap between "flying monsters", sprintable prop monsters, and other base levels to build more.

As a Kid, my mother tried to show me the Augsburger Puppenkiste and I was terrified of the puppets. From there on I always had an uncomfortable feeling, when I saw any kind of puppet but mainly Marionettes. But then, the Labyrinth and later the dark Crystal crossed my way and I fell in love with these movies. It didn't cure my little "Phobia" but gave me a wired fascination for puppets. It's like: "Yes you are such a beautiful and stunning Puppet but stay away from me and don't touch me please!" No need to say that I freaked out when I heard about the Netflix series....in a good way. :D

But then I heard two names mentioned for the creators to be. Henson and Froud!!!!! I shed a tear, trembled slightly, immediately renewed my Netflix subscription and waited patiently for "The Age of Resistance." Now that I've binged it twice!!! I can truly say that they nailed it! My heart and creative soul have been rejuvenated!! I now have a bigger smidgen of hope for the future of fantasy and sci-fi on streaming services. Thanks for a great vid! I’ve never seen the Dark Crystal, but I have seen TheOdd1sOut’s video on the film and loved it. Now I finally have access to this film and I’m super excited to watch it (and the prequel series). I remember one of the flaws James mentioned was that there was just so much story they wanted to tell that it couldn’t all fit into one little film which left some things vague and confusing (examples he used was “if they draw life from the sun and podling juice, why did the old skeksis ruler die?” and “why did the flute make the crystal shard glow?”) so I’m super happy that there can be more expansion on this beautiful universe

I personally love practical effects. They age SO much better than CGI. Even CGI from 5-10 years ago now looks... cheap. And even though it gets better every year, you will probably always see the difference to practical effects (or at least for quite a while longer). CGI just feels very different.

I have not watched Dark Crystal: AoR yet, precisely because of the fear it would disappoint. Labyrinth and Dark Crystal (and Willow, Legend, The Adventures of Baron Munchaussen, etc) inspired my love of immersive, collaborative fantasy worlds and YES I was in love with puppets (Jim Henson's Storyteller Hour was essentially my first fandom, when I was a wee child). I distinctly remember being heartbroken that I look nothing like the pale, lithe fey of the Froud world and dealing with a lot of body anxiety because that image became the embodiment of the mystical, powerful feminine in my imagination (I'm tearing up just typing all this). Honestly, my dream job would be to decorate an immersive space, like the Scabby Rooster, or The Cauldron in NYC and London, or the LARP hotel my friends and I dream or one day opening- I'd love to apprentice under set designers and prop makers, and would spend money instead of making it for the chance to create a space you walk into and think "this is that world". My husband and I both cried the first time we went to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, because of the set design and subtle immersion moments. It's...it's an addiction. It's even a family obsession (my brother is currently designing a starship-themed educational "escape room"/LARP and we're working on the props- his aesthetic is fully scifi, where mine is fully medieval-ish fantasy). And I'm co-hosting an immersive "light LARP" convention in Virginia next year, all themed around magic. It's in a hotel, so I'm buying what props I can and trying to absorb as much about game design as possible, but I really really really really want to go curl up in these worlds we all love and dream about. And I hope that the commercial success of AoR paves the way for more of these spaces to exist.

Speaking as a huge fan of the film, who grew up with it and saw it in the theater in 1982 - the mini-series does NOT disappoint. Trust me, you'll love it.

There isn't going to be a second season for that very reason. Henson's daughter said this was a one-off prequel mini-series, because the only other thing they could show is the genocide of the Gelfling, and nobody wants to see that.

@@thewheelies6801 yet they have a concrete script for season 2, left on a cliffhanger and everyone wants to work on it again from the voice actors to the puppeteers? They've already made you feel for characters and their horrific backstories then beaten them to death with an innocent character watching on and screams in the background, so who's saying that they won't go darker and kill off all the gelflings. Can you link to any articles which have Henson's daughter saying this?

Yeah!!! More Puppets in immersive spaces!!! More Puppets for the world. In the Westflügel in Leipzig we work with todays Puppetry and due to my LARP history and my interst in immersive, participative theatre we are working on puppets in those settings as well... and machines and whatsoever. Keep an eye out for THE TEMPLE in June 2020. :D

Have Larps tried getting with an indie filmmakers? I am interested in writing a script utilizing such creative minds and then creating a movie. As a partnership of course. (or should I have said "guild"?) Until I watched Labyrinth and Th Dark Crystal, I didn't know I was into fantasy. Since I am a student of the Mysteries, I enjoyed the mysticism in the Dark Crystal. I am still hooked. I merely haven't meet others into such things, as creating another world.

There won't be another "season", it's just a mini-series prequel to the '82 movie. The only other thing they could show is the genocide of the Gelfling and as Henson said, "nobody wants to see that". ;-)

Problem I got is... my world and folks are not ready, to LARP or watch me LARP. They're already not really going with me in Dark Crystal binge watching adventure. And problem I have is.... I always felt ready to assume getting deep into LARPing, and leave them all behind. So... I've been sticking with "not-LARPing" since a decade, now. But... don't push me. Or I might patiently close that one door that is my current life, to open a new one, and start weaving a costume and a puppet to life. Fire in our hearts.
