The Dark Crystal's Original Jen Gelfling Costume!

Ғылым және технология

Adam is stunned by the beauty and craft of this original costume for Jen in the classic Jim Henson film The Dark Crystal! Prop Store's Brandon Alinger explains how this Gelfling costume was carefully restored when he added it to his personal collection and how any reconstruction blends with the original materials and processes used to fabricate it. From tunic to cape, every little detail of this small-scale costume adds to the world building of Jim Henson's dark fantasy masterpiece.

A note for Adam: The "Age of Resistance" series is immaculate. I was never the biggest fan of the film (blasphemy, I know!), but I watched it again just before getting into the series. The series actually makes the film better, providing context and story that was simply non-existent before.

The crazy thing is that the movie was a blueprint for the series. Jim Henson did 5 years of research and development before coming up with the final product for the movie. By the time AOR came they followed much of what was used in the film as well as using puppet techniques that weren't available at the time the movie was made.

Fun little fact I found out when he was at our store doing a signing. Mike Edmonds, the man inside the Aughra costume, was also Logray the Ewok shaman, the tip of Jabbas tail, and the Ugnaught who pressed the button to put Han in carbonite. Such a devious actor.

I was privileged and lucky enough to have a coffee with Brian Froud at their cottage on Dartmoor many years ago and got to see one of the original Jen's just casually sitting in a seat in the lounge. Brian and wendy's art inspired me to create my own fabtasy sculptures which went on to be relatively successful being sold at the festivals such as Glastonbury, Reading Rock, T-in the park, Womad etc.

Watched it many a times and none of my friends had a clue what I was banging on about 🙈 when the Netflix series Age of Resistance came out I was super excited! It was stunning... Absolutely captured everything I expected and more! I'm gutted there's no Season 2 or more... I want to gobble up every spec of this wonderful world! The Dark Crystal is my all time favorite movie next to Star Wars A New Hope. Back in the early '80s all the props from The Dark Crystal were touring around the world and when they came to Melbourne I saw them at the Myer store. There was a Garthim, Jen and Kira puppets and probably that very costume. The Chamberlain Skeksil and Garthim master Skekung costumes as well as podlings and the Augra costume. The detail was phenomenal but I was surprised that while on screen these creatures, especially the Garthim, looked huge, the props were much smaller but in scale with the Gelflings and the Skeksis. It must have been a tight fit for the operators inside the Garthim and Skeksis costumes. Apparently Jim Henson operated Skekung as well as Jen. It was an awesome exhibition and it was and is still an awesome movie.

First and second time watching it, I watch it for the story. After that, I focus on all the characters, how they move, what the people who operate them go through...... I love watching the behind the scenes of movies, the story behind the creation of them, their inspirations for each character. Would be cool to be involved in this type of industry. But, I just sit back and appreciate for my own personal enjoyment. Fun stuff.

One person was on a project and was told about a new project for him to be involved in. When they gave him the name of it. He dropped everything and cancelled all his other work to make the series come to life. 😉 👍

Fun fact: had the puppeteers and writers Jim hired for Fraggle Rock had not been so good at their jobs. Dark Crystal would have never been made because Jim would have had to spend so much time on the Fraggle Rock set.

I'm near certain you'd love the newer Dark Crystal Adam. The only thing you'll dislike is that it was cancelled.
