Year Six (Post-Apocalyptic)

Фильм және анимация

Daniel struggles to survive in a post-apocalyptic world, while coping with the loss of everything he once knew and loved.
- (PLEASE READ *POSSIBLE SPOILERS*) We worked on this film as high school seniors with the intent of it being our very first feature length film back in 2011. It was made with a non existent budget, and we did what we could with what we had. Several times the production came to a halt and then picked back up once again, until it finally came to an end completely. We didn't get to shoot roughly 1/3 of the film, but I was able to salvage what we had shot in order to create it into what you see here. Some scenes had to be moved around, while some were never finished and had to be cut. So if you notice some inconsistencies or continuity errors that's most likely why, but we figured it was better to make due with what we had shot instead of the project going to waste completely.
Many have been asking about the ending, what truly happened, and whether or not there will be a sequel. Unfortunately, the answer is no. At least not with the same cast due to the main actor moving and losing contact with him. We may one day try to rework the script and reshoot it but I do not wish to make any false promises. We are currently working on a post-apocalyptic series that may share some similarities with this film due to us not thinking this was ever going to see the light of day at the beginning of shooting. We wish to have some of it release by summers end, so if you would like to see that please consider subscribing.
As for the ending, we realize now that the ending can be and has been taken many different ways by many people, which is totally fine with us.

Mark, I'd like to congratulate you on "Year Six" If for no other reason, just getting it done. I started making Super 8 films in the 6th grade, and I've worked professionally as an actor, comic, and writer in films and TV since 1988, and I wanted to let you know, watching your film actually inspired me. Keep up the good work, and don't ever think you need to come out here to Hollywood to "make it!" because you've already done more at your age than most of the so-called professionals in LA. More than anything, I give you credit for getting it made - THATS the hardest thing to do. I've personally failed at as many projects as I've succeeded at, and I'm only talking about actually getting them finished. People who sit out there doing nothing but talking will never know how it feels to accomplish something like this - You do. Keep slugging away, good luck, and keep up the good work! :)

The camera angles, pacing, cinematography, editing, acting, sequencing and background music are excellent. For High Schoolers to independently produce a film of such high quality is a remarkable feat. I hope this film crew sticks together. They could have a bright future.

I must say, excellent film. I thought you did a great job. The cinematography and locations were perfect and really amplified the mood. The lo-fi minimalist indie music really fit well. Kind of the way John Carpenter used constant finger snaps or low drum beats in the background throughout his films. Like an ever present anticipation build up for something that never happens and leaves you nervous. You found a balance of action and introspective down time. Constant action is the ruin of many films that have much better potential. The slower, more realistic scenes give the viewer time to ponder what life would really be like in a world like you portrayed and how brutal it would actually be. An hour well spent. Thank you so much.

Third time I've watched this awesome story! I go about 6-8 months in between viewing, and the story gets better each time. Love the storyline, music, photography (which is superb, btw), and the acting is outstanding! Hollywood ain't got nothin' on you....as they say. I'd love to see a sequel, where he finds Alice, and that she didn't die. Now that would be an awesome follow-up. Thank you for this great story!! Oh......and ignore the immature, jealous little boys that make negative comments, as they obviously, have never truly loved anyone, in their sad, lonely lives. Truly loving someone means that you put the one you love hopes, dreams, and needs before your own. And that is what the main character did. Which is more then most of these immature fools would ever do for their woman. How sad. Great job.....thank you!!

So you're one of "those" types? You can't take constructive criticism, without offense. Constructive criticism is a must in any area of life. Life isn't all rainbows and fluffy puppies, quite the contrary. Constructive criticism, criticism in general, is what gets people above and beyond. Of course balancing praises, encouragements and constructive criticism is needed but if you only give praise and encouragement, you're keeping people from doing better.. which defeats the purpose in growing mentally, physically & spiritually. Accept constructive criticism just as much as you would encouragement and praise.

Cinematography framing and composition balance of characters and background elements is excellent, often beautiful. I can immediately think of another director - that had this rare "artist's eye" for the pictorial aspect of a story. That person was Stanley Kubrick.

My initial reaction was what a stupid movie THEN I read your comments!!! For a high school group of kids on zero budget with a home style personal camera and probably home editing software, this is REMARKABLY well done - from the editing which is quite interesting - I realize you originally intended the factory scene to be the end or so it seems -- but moving parts around you've come up with a movie open to interpretation. Great camera work, fine acting -- just an all around great first job. I sincerely hope that those involved have moved on to careers in the film industry. If not, you all have missed your calling!!

The fight scenes were well coreographed, directed and edited, worthy of a pro, the storyline we had was a bit tropey but for a first time by highschoolers not bad. The SFX for no budget also very good, If you ever get to reshoot, after a nuke you should never sleep on the ground, your inhaling fallout, anyone looking at blast light is pretty much dead already and you pull water for drinking from fast moving water not still, theres all sorts of nastys in still water.

This was riveting. Once in, I couldn't stop until the end. I'm a big fan of "end-of-the-world" scenarios, so this had a highly realistic scenario, and it hung together rather well. The acting lacked a certain intensity at times, but I can see where emotional exhaustion would be a part of the psyche in such a situation. Also, the actor was realistically "deadpan" as is required for good acting. Your cameraman is gifted.

I'm back here after a couple of years. Had to run searches and ask the A.I. to help with 'dystopia' and 'post-apoxyourlips' that finally delivered the link. The reason I'm back is that I have consumed a lot of video since then, some of it exceptional, some of it good and some of it crap, some of it not memorable. I came back because this film left a RESONANCE. I mean that to be the highest of praise because the visuals and the acting and the storyline were so compelling that it stuck in my mind that long to want to see it again. One time when your film crept back into my mind I played movie critic and had a hard time believing the line from Daniel that he was traveling on business. He just looked too young. That was my problem: I'm so old that I couldn't even remember back to those days when I was young and traveling on business. So even a single critique vaporized on introspection. Ten stars. I noticed your links to other projects so I will be checking those out as well.

I like the ending anyway fellas, he'd put up with six years of hope, staying true to himself and Alice. Finally, his only hope was to become like the other survivors. He loves Alice. She is with them and he knows now how he must be to get her back. There is still hope. Sad as it is now. Great little film. Applause!!!!

It had the feel and flow of a Studio shoot...and quite frankly was far better then a lot that is on cable these days. I hope all of you are pursuing careers. i know a filmmaker about the same age as you that I am going to send this to. Perhaps you could all work together, you will find him and a couple associates are very good as well.. they both have things on here as well as other releases.

Six years post-apocalypse and this guy is freshly shaved and his eyeglasses are spotless. Sure... In truth, he'd probably be filthy. Showers won't be a thing anymore, and the only time you'll get clean is when you find a stream or river and go skinny dipping (which will be cold), so not very often. You also won't be doing laundry much (if at all). Actors need to be grungy.

I actually enjoyed the entire thing except for the guitar. It sounded too much like someone who had just learned a few chords and wa la. Especially around the early part in the first 10 or 15 minutes was simply irritating to me, monotonously repetitive with 3-5 semi-simple chords/ notes. I almost shut it off but persevered and really enjoyed all other aspects. Good Work Guys.

Yea I know it was made like that with intent that is why it exists like that. I really do not mean to be so critical about it. I know because I did it like that 40 years ago. LOL

Dear Rise and Shine Productions, I found the feature entertaining and very watchable. The only continuity inconsistencies seemed to be the variable bandage. But, as you explained the difficulties and interruptions in production, that's understandable. I would like to compliment the many aspects of your effort which I found worthwhile. The cinematography was solid, professional, and clearly shot by someone with a good eye. The acting was good, especially the timing on the dialogue. It's so easy to rush through a scene, but this paced quite well. The score, limited as it was in instrumentation, fit the piece well, was cleanly performed, and added much to the flavor of it. The editing, especially since it was basically a salvaged "unfinished work," was really impressive. The writing was real, in the sense especially that the dialogue was not cliché, but very believable. I imagine in the original script, he eventually either finds Alice, or discovers what finally happened to her. But that does not matter now. What matters is, you put a lot of good work into a project, and even though it never got to where you wanted it to be, you made something authentic and compelling from it. I have nothing negative to say. I was once VERY critical of a short film that had a 10K budget, which I thought was among the worst wastes of money and time I've ever seen. Here, with no budget, and an unfinished shoot, you made something that I was happy to watch all the way through. I salute your work, and I hope to see your names on a feature film one day! If I may quote a line from "Better Off Dead..." "Go that way, really fast. If something gets in your way... turn."

Scottymatic Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment! It really means a lot to us to hear your kind words. Your assumptions are correct about the original script unfortunately, there was quite a bit that never got to see the light of day regarding Alice, the gang, their affiliation with the cabin man, and several other things, but it is what it is. Maybe one day we will do some rewrites and take another stab at it.
