YEAR IN REVIEW | The WWF in 1997 (Full Year Documentary)
The year 1997 brought us a lot of great things, in the world of Television we were first introduced to South Park and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, in music the Spice Girls were top of the charts and the WWF, the year was very much split in two halves. On screen, the company was going through arguably their best year ever creatively, with some of their greatest storylines starting to develop and a number of major stars rising to the forefront. Off screen however, things would not be so rosy as, with WCW continuing to beat them in the ratings war, Vince McMahon’s company would come closer than it ever had to going out of business. So, join us today as we take a deep dive into the entire story from start to finish in The WWF in 1997: A Year in Review.

The greatest year in professional wrestling as a whole. With the rise of ECW and WCW competing with WWF every Monday night in the ratings war. 97 was lightyears ahead of what had come out of the WWF in the past few years. In terms of storytelling and booking. 97 led us into the “Attitude Era”. However IMO 97 was better and has aged better than a lot of the attitude era, from 98 onwards.

@@Hawks2tuff well they started moving away from The New Generation Era towards the end of 96. Going with more grittier storylines, such as “Pillmans Got A Gun” during November. The Attitude Era wasn’t in full swing until around WM14, many would say that Austin winning the championship was the official start of The Attitude Era. For me personally the time between the end of” The New Generation Era” and official start of “The Attitude Era” was the most exciting time in pro wrestling history. there was so much going on at the time, which felt fresh and exciting. The Attitude Era was amazing. at the time. However much of it was “crash TV” which hasn’t aged well. 5 star classics were very few during this time. Plus when it was officially “the attitude era” it did become very formulaic. Also WCW started to dwindle during 98. WWF started to run away with “The Monday Night War”. Although WCW had won in the ratings for over 80 weeks. While WWF, for much of this time, had the better show.

The ending months of 1997 was perhaps the craziest time period for the Monday Night Wars. The nWo storyline was heating up and reaching its conclusion, and then with the Montreal Screwjob happening, WCW literally had all the cards on hand to deliver the finishing blow and put McMahon out of business. If you had said WCW would eventually lose the war back then, a lot of people will call you crazy, cause that was WCW's highest point leading to Starrcade 97. Unfortunately for WCW, their mishandling of Starrcade 97's show soon made some pundits see that perhaps WCW was not going to win after all.

@@jp3813 I am not too certain, cause the end of 1997 was a very low point for Vince McMahon, PR-wise. He just got out of that steroid scandal, and the Montreal Screwjob left him with a lot of egg on his face. Vince's willingness to screw Bret Hart, one of his most loyal employees, nearly caused a revolt in the locker room, cause who knows if they will be next to have the rug pulled out from them. Ironically, it was Bret himself who told his former co-workers not to sabotage their careers for him, but even then, the damage was done. Trust in Vince was scarce, and that was the closest the WWF had ever been towards shuttering its doors for good.

For 83 weeks, Nitro was defeating Raw in the ratings. Wrestlers were jumping ship to WCW faster than you could say “Titanic.” Bret Hart was told the company couldn’t afford him, and the company was downsizing and taking the water coolers out of the offices. But the company was not on the verge of bankruptcy as some would believe. Actually, despite getting thumped in ratings, the WWE’s House Show and international presence was not only keeping the company afloat but helping them turn it around from an economic standpoint. 2

WWE Got The F Out on May 5, 2002. The February 2014 Debut of The WWE Network Logo but wouldn't be used officially until after Summerslam 2014, ending the Scratch Logo Era for good. Great thumbnail but you might have to split the "New Generation Logo" and "Attitude Logo" in half because the "Scratch Logo" did not appear on "WWF TV" until December 15, 1997.

Whilst America blew up big time in the 80's with music, films, culture and so on.. The mid 90's to mid 2000 were the UK's time to shine and we sold to the world.. I left school in 94 and off to college in 95.. The late 90's and early 2000's were a hell of a time to grow up.. I'de say the 2nd best gen since the 60's with UK music, film and everything else.. Euro's 96 was one huge party.. Well.. Until we were knocked out in the semi finals.. Dam Germans. lol To top it all off.. Wrestling hit it's peak... Even my brother in-law said "I don't like wrestling at all.. Ohh wait, That Stone Cold is good. When he's on. I'll watch it." lol

im 30 and I wasn't watching in 1997 but when I got into wrestling back in the early 2000s I used to go on different websites (Before KZread) to find different clips of episodes of RAW from 97, 98 and 1999 and I used to always say 1997 was such an underrated year for WWF but so much started that year. The best version of the Raw titantron is the Debut one on March 10 1997 and they used Beautiful People as the them for a few weeks. That was the night imo that the WWF start to kick it into high gear.

Correct me if in wrong but I saw matches around ‘96 or earlier where Bret Hart would lift an opponent’s legs 🦵🏻 1 boot at a time and then proceed to stomp them on the groin. In the Smackdown games this was considered a heel move. Only bad guys did low blows. I found it odd that Bret did that as a supposed good guy or role model. He did other “dirty” moves too. He was definitively in a grey zone even before the crowd boo’d him
