    I helped build a Habitat for Humanity house for a family of Yazidi refugees a few years ago. One of the more interesting work days on that house was when we had a group of international students come to paint the house. Several of those students were Saudi Arabians, whom I assume were Wahhabi. I don't think I've ever seen more shock on anyone's face than the moment we told then they would be working to help Yadizis from Iran. Those student didn't get much work done as they took several long breaks for prayer.

On the base is a geometric engraving which represents the Melek Taus. If a flame is placed in the bowl in a dark room, the perforations emit projections of light on the walls. It is a beautiful relic & fine work of art.

    They could also be incorporating Hinduism. The peacock is a symbol of Lord Krishna and I’ve seen Yazidi iconology with A person riding a peacock who had markings on their foreheads that resemble both Vaisnava and Saivite markings. One of Krishnas sons in their scriptures rides a peacock in battle. The seven seers or Siddhas are used in Hinduism and also represent the planets. Too many similarities!

    In case anyone wonders why there are so many similarities to hinduism. Yazidis and Hindus have the same ancestry. both groups belong to the Indo-Iranian family. and thousands of years ago these peoples all lived together. Yazidis have their origins in present-day Iran and at that time these areas bordered on the Vedic cultures. Not many Yezidis know this fact..

    Religious studies isn't in high demand per se, but any job which involves interacting with people of various backgrounds will benefit from a degree in it. In general, I advise people to study what makes them happy and usually they will be able to do something with it if they are willing to work hard. Studying something you love will make it feel less difficult when trying to find or create a career. But if you're looking for an easy way to make money, you're looking in the wrong place.

    Pursue such study at a public (State) university. Private colleges tend to have a historical connection to some Christian denomination. May have very strong theology studies but weak when it comes to a comprehensive and general study of religion or focus on non Christian religion. I would recommend Indiana University (Bloomington), that is where I did my graduate work in Religious Studies. Well rounded and balanced offerings.

In the past we used to hide so others wouldn't know of our existence and that's how we protected ourselves and our temples from outsiders. But now because everyone knows the place of the temple they might go and b0mb it. They do it all the time. My dad died in a suicide bombing and one day someone also bombed himself in the middle of our village without any reason and that was even before is!s existed.

    I highly doubt it. Yazidism is a part of a larger realm of Iranian religions collectively termed 'Yazdanism'. Therefore, it is highly unlikely it is related to Hinduism. If anything, Yazidism is a sub sect of Zoroastrian ism. Yazidism is monotheistic, unlike Hinduism. The shape of lamps cannot be used as a comparison. It doesn't act as concrete evidence.

    If I remember correctly (speaking from memory as I haven't been able to find the source) Yazidi tradition also has a story in which all the angels bow before the newly created Adam except for Melek Tawus; when God asks him why he isn't bowing, Melek Tawus replies "because You told us earlier to bow to no creature but You", then God rewards him by elevating him above the rest of the angels. A similar story exists in the Muslim and Judeo-christian traditions, but in that one it's Satan/Eblis who won't bow to Adam, and he is _punished_ for it, not rewarded. All in all, I guess it's not surprising that people took the Yazidis for devil worshippers...

  • @tstarr8314

    @tstarr8314

    3 жыл бұрын

    Technically Iblis wasn't punished for not bowing to Adam. Iblis had been given special permissions from God such as interacting with the angels, which other djinn were not permitted to do, because he was loved by God. Then he disobeyed God's command, questioned God's decision to create Adam essentially telling God He had made a mistake, and declared himself to be better than Adam because he was made from fire while man was made from clay. He put his love for himself over his love for God. In Islam it is said that anyone with an ounce of arrogance in their heart will not enter Paradise, and it sounds like Iblis had pounds of it.

    The portion about focusing more on identity and practice than “correct belief” really spoke to me. As a Jewish person, I’ve always found my religion to be similar, and found it odd when Christians focused so much on the exact details of the stories in the Torah and not at all on the cultural connection and understanding of your ancestors you get from studying the torah that I felt were what was actually important about my religion

    That is because we don't believe that other people from other religion won't go to heaven or reincarnated in a good life after this life. Most important thing is to help others and never disrespect god and always pray to him. We are not really that religious but to helping others is the most important thing in life. My family smuggled alot Jewish people out of iraq when the arabs got crazy in Iraq for no reason.

    Hey, I love the channel, I'm glad I discovered it like 2 days ago! Are you planning on doing an overview of Zoroastrianism? Because I've heard a lot of academics refer to it as a duelistic religion but from my understanding the communities that practice Zoroastrianism refer to their own beliefs as Monotheistic. So it would be nice to have this situation cleared up, because it seems like there is a conflict between outsider perspectives and classification versus how the communities view themselves. Thanks for the great content and hard work!

    You always bring up the social component when you define religion. What I'm curious about is can something qualify as religion without a social component. For instance could someone who is the first and only ever person to hold an elabortate system of belief and practice be said to be the singular member of religion? Likewise is the last living member of a religion part of religion? Also would something like Discordianism qualify as religion if sincerely practiced?

This was mentioned by the esoteric teacher Gurdjieff . Also, your three B framework would be excellent in describing Wicca which, has some of the same problems in scholarship since there are no scriptures and no standard beliefs.
