@@GEM4sta if you only consider 2700+ GMs super GMs then yeah, by definition he was not. The avarage elo however always rises due to a mathematical thing, just google it if you don t believe me. Now if we reconsider that he was 10th in his time…

@@Sharkmoves so should I consider 2450 IMs from his time GM instead because the general playing strength was lower? Super GM isn't top 10. If you want to say he's top 10 then you say he was top 10. Super GM is 2700, there are plenty of them that aren't top 10.

@@GEM4sta By that definition Boris Spassky, Vasily Smyslov, Tigran Petrosian, Viktor Korchnoi and Paul Keres are not Super GMs. I doubt the Super GMs today can beat these guys in their prime. Don’t make it sound that there is no elo inflation. Yes, IMs then can be considered GM strength if the number of tournaments today are the same as their time. Easy elo.

There was a point in time where Yasser was one of THE best chess players in the entire world.
Yasser cracks me up everytime. Both stories and storytelling are awesome!
Gotta love yassir
My favorite bit of info about Yasser is that despite seeming like the nicest and most soft-spoken guy in the world, he had a 4-0 lifetime record against Tal. Tal was of course a crazy killer and had a winning record against Bobby Fischer.

Yaser and Aman, two awesome dudes. Love it!
Yasser is a legend! what a great personality
Love the Karpov story and Yasser's storytelling, but I'm low-key impressed with Aman's endgame. Yeah, okay, it is a fairly simple pawn endgame where he draws as the black King can't infiltrate, but look how calm Aman is with seconds left on his clock. I know he is a GM, but if I am that low on time (drawn position or not), I lose my marbles, hang all my pieces and then hang mate in 1 xD

obviously karpov will have a low win streak, he's a no risk type player and doesnt always try to win, so in a tournament or match if he needs a draw to win, he will draw. Anyways the real achievement is to have a long streak of super tournament wins. Which Kasparov,Karpov have not bobby

true, chess is like war. You don't need to win every battle to win the war. P.S. Fischer didn't want to face Karpov despite the conditions being similar to the modern ones - first to X points wins. If all games drawn, the champion stays the same. As much as I admire Fischer's games and creativity, he seems to be too much of a diva. But maybe I lack some insight.

Pavel, the insight you lack is that Fischer had to face all of the USSR virtually alone. Soviets were huge cheats. As to the rest of the commenters I don't think Fischer was crazy, just more insightful and honest than most.

who?
Based on what I can find on chessgames (and I may be mistaken), it looks like Yasser is misremembering slightly and instead scored 7.5/8 in eight games with a draw in the middle? I'm getting four wins at the end of Phillips & Drew Kings in London followed by a draw and three wins at the Toluca Interzonal. His wins are nothing to sneeze at, though, comparable to Karpov's six at Linares 1994: Yasser got Ljubojevic, Karpov, Nunn, Miles, Kouatly, Portisch, and Adorjan, conceding a draw to Ivanov.

Yasser was a top 10 player a few times during late 80's to early 90's. Nowadays he's retired, he hasnt played a classical tournament game in a decade, so Eric is currently a lot stronger. But prime Yasser would be a favorite against Eric.
