"I was so angry it cost me two minutes to calm down" The full two minutes!
"I havent recovered." So good!
Yasser seems very kind, but also very, very intense at times. I absolutely can imagine him being pushed over the edge and clocking Kasparov. You don't become #1 board for a chess power without being a ridiculously competitive person. Love the guy.
He expresses himself beautifully.
Ironically Yasser's worst moment is more about Kasparov behaving badly
Wonderful story! I can't help but picture Karpov and Gulko raising their heads and with a 'what-the-f...' look in their faces only to find Garry apologizing to Yasser just in time to avoid being square-punched in the jaw! LOL!

That's not how the rules work. As far as I know you can be given more time after the pieces are re-set, but accidentally knocking over the pieces is not considered cause in the rules for forfeiting a game.

@@strategicsage7694 I'd argue he knew, or should have known, the possible consequences of hitting the clock so hard. He was responsible. There are accidents that occur even when everyone is behaving reasonably. Then there are accidents that result from negligence or misbehavior. At a minimum they should have adjusted Yasser's clock to make him whole.

@@strategicsage7694 What about "accidentally" knocking over multiple boards at once? Seriously, your devil's advocate is not necessary here. He should've resigned that game on the spot if he was actually sorry. Anything other than that is a complete lack of sincerity.

@@apocalypseap I'm not playing devil's advocate. I'm pointing out that it's not what the rules say. Sincerity/sorrow are a completely different issue and Kasparov definitely was not 'clean' in terms of competitive ethics imo, but you can still be sorry for something and at the same time not think it justifies losing the game. One doesn't follow the other.

It ought to be in the rules that if you hit the clock so hard it knocks the pieces over, then you forfeit the game.

Couldn't you call arbiter and winn if opponent fliped over all of your pieces?
Garry Chess, the creator of chess.
smashing
i get this angry every night on lichess
I was no fan of Kasparov and never will be. He always make fun of people who plays sidelines and beat him. If the opponent plays the mainline of course he beats them because his strength lies there (with Russian gms all helping him). He played such a bad manners to disturb the opponents so he could win on the board. These days people would complain to arbiter who can verify it with the camera and take some disciplinary action towards them. In my view he is not a chess legend. Just a chess bully! Luckily we got some good World Champions who are humble (Anand, Magnus) loved by almost all the opponents. :)
It seems all the funny disrespect stories are coming out since Hans Niemann is on the radar. Because all chess players know now there is always someone who had it worst.
Great Story Yasser
i mean, if you knocked over the board on 3 tables, isn't that an auto-loss? or at least give extra time to the other player lol
Who’s the female commentator?
If I was playing a guy and he did that I would end up ejected from the tourney. I would have also probably been banned from tourney play.

Never heard of Mr. Kasparov throwing such a temper tantrum (assuming the story as recounted is true). I would have thought that high level chess would have very strict enforcement against any such extreme behavior - it sounded wild. GK had to have been picking a fight for some reason. That it also had disturbing effects on players at adjacent boards is crazy. Maybe GK was drugged. Hard to believe that no physical altercations happened right then and there.

3:32 My thought as well. As horrendous as Kasparov's behavior was, Yasser had a clear and immediate attempt at recourse that he chose not to use. That's on him.
It's good to remember that back in his hayday, Kasparov got away with some extremely unsportsmanlike behaviour, just like when he cheated against Polgar. So anyone who accuses Magnus of being unprofessional in the Hans saga should find someone else as a shining example of everlasting perfect behaviour (hint: there are none).
