Yanis Varoufakis: The West Is "Playing with Fire" If It Pushes Regime Change in Nuclear-Armed Russia

A month after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, more than 3.6 million Ukrainians have left the country as refugees, and the war risks becoming "an Afghanistan-like quagmire," warns Greek lawmaker Yanis Varoufakis, founder of the Progressive International with U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders. He says the West's sweeping sanctions on Russia and bottomless military aid to Ukraine risk escalating the conflict and foreclosing chances of a peaceful resolution. "What is exactly the aim? Is it regime change in Russia?" asks Varoufakis. "Well, whenever the United States tried regime change, it didn't turn out very well and has never been tried with a nuclear power. This is like playing with fire."

@@tedhernandez2394 It’s an old talking point wheeled out each time there are discussions about the other side. “Do you support terrorism.” And don’t make this personal. Keep to the facts, it helps with thoughtful and impartial analysis. Does America support terrorism? It supported ISIS in Syria, Pinochet in Chile, Noriega in Panama, the Taliban and Bin Laden in Afghanistan, Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, Saddam against the Iranians, the Stasi in Iran, Carlos Castillo Armas in Guatemala. The CIA’s involvement in Nicaragua’s Contra drug cartels…we know many thousands of innocents, including reporters, have been killed in the so called ‘war on drugs.’ The list is endless…Drone strikes have killed more innocent civilians than any number of crude IEDs devised by religious and political zealots. The numbers of civilian killed in various adventures aided an abetted by America runs into the millions. Half a million children estimated to have died as a consequence of American involvement in Iraq alone. Around 626 massacres and over 32,000 people killed in Guatemala in what’s referred to as the Mayan holocaust. “200,000 children had lost at least one parent in the war and that between 45,000 and 60,000 adult Guatemalans were killed between 1980 and 1985….US training of the officer corps in counterinsurgency techniques ‘had a significant bearing on human rights violations during the armed confrontation’ but that the US was not directly responsible for any genocidal acts.” So let’s refrain from the “do you get a buzz when you see innocents get killed” rhetoric. Don’t take my word for it, a little research will do. And when you do, please check the references to ensure they are credible sources. One place to look would be documents disclosed on the CIA website. Happy to provide references if you need them.

Yes, very “honest” indeed, especially in regard to Cuban crisis. How’s about his entire argumentation is twisted, corrupted, it’s nothing more than a LIE. Let’s expose it. Shall we? Cuban Missile Crisis was never about Cuba choosing its military alliance or political or ideological orientation (as in Ukraine, matter of fact Cuba IS communist country till this very day, and Soviet troops were stationed there till 1991, 30 years AFTER Cuban crisis). Since the beginning, it was always all about Soviets placing there their nuclear weapons, capable of reaching 75% of US territory (including Washington DC) with less than 5 minutes warning. In 60-ties, when dominant method of nuclear strike were still bombers, ability to strike with such a short warning, was considered inviting opportunity for a first strike. If attacker could strike at Command and Control in such a short time, they would not be able to issue in time retaliation order, he could (possibly) hope he can annihilate enemy unpunished. In todays world, even countries still hold to old nuclear arms agreements (keeping weapons at distance - as it was believed, short time for response needed increases possibility of accidental start of nuclear exchange), entire problem is academic. In age of hypersonic weapons, nuclear submarines and stealth, no short distance or even hypersonic speed is needed anymore to facilitate zero warning attack (stealth ((or possibly submarine born strike)) ALONE is enough). Retaliation policies of all major nuclear states were long adapted, to facilitate this new reality and prevent possibility of unpunished first strike. Ukraine does not seek nuclear weapons on its territory. Vladimir Putin did not attacked Ukraine because there were nukes there (matter of fact there are no ANY nuclear weapons in ANY NATO country which joined after 1991). Looking for resemblance between Ukrainian crisis and Cuban Missiles Crisis? Fine! If anything, let’s, SAME as during Cuban Missiles Crisis, allow Ukraine to NATO, guarantee it will never, ever be invaded (as president Kennedy did in regard to Cuba). On top, for promise of not placing nukes in Ukraine, let’s remove nukes from Belarus (similarly as president Kennedy removed Atlas missiles from Turkey, during Cuban crisis). Claim that US would not allow Russia’s ally at its border IS A LIE. Cuba (and even Venezuela) ARE allies of the Russia. Russian troops stationed on Cuba for decades! As JM twists facts to facilitate its narrative, quite “coincidently” Vladimir Putin continue to quotes the very same corrupted rhetoric, over and over again, comparing Ukraine and US stand to Cuban crisis. The real pearls of his rhetorics are however references to breaking international law, while he totally forgets to even mention, Budapest Memorandum, where Russia agreed to,… guarantees Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence for giving away nukes from their territory (would Ukraine not, it would be today third biggest nuclear power in the world). John Mearsheimer (JM) claims proudly he is “eighteen century man” than quotes US policies from 18th century. I mean: really??? Does this mean he ALSO believes: woman have no mental capacity to do anything other but cook, slavery should be legal, homosexuality is criminal, mental diseases are not diseases but evil spirits, there are monsters living in seas and overseas, clitoral orgasm is sign of insanity, rain follows the plow (land which has agriculture is more likely to get rain), poop cures everything - just few examples I was able to dig. I mean, why stop on 18th century and not go further? In 15th century it was common to cut tongue and pluck eyes of king of enemy army who lost war and was caught. This could very well justify war crimes in Ukraine today. After all, Anglo Saxons in England did same and worse,…in 15th century.

I think most of us who know Ukraine history, were amazed Biden instigated this situation (along with other US Presidents, starting with Clinton). He gave Ukraine the impression the US would support them, and then told Zelenskyy there would be no EU, NATO, or American troops to support them. Then the US propaganda machine started and Americans have no idea how Putin has been very reserved and patient while The United States continued to sanction Russian peoples and devastate Crimea. Putin finally had had enough! The only reason US wants Putin to be charged with war crimes, is because the US NEVER signed the treaty allowing the US to be charged with any war crimes even though they have invaded, deviated countries, bombed indiscriminately, killed and displaced millions of women and children. But not having signed the 'world treaty' the AMERICANS sit back smuggle. The US want to just grind Russia out of existance, even if it kills Ukraine people and their economy for the next 50 years.

Did you miss what happened in Canada with the trucker's protest? That was a peaceful demonstration and the government use its power to call it a terrorist insurrection which gave them the legal power ( in their minds ) to crush it by all means necessary. People who donated money to the trucker's, bank accounts were ceased by the government. It is a violation of the rules of law. That is the kind of thing that China or Cuba would do. Not a western nation. If they went after oligarchs the government would not stop - when the moment is right - to come after you and me under some trumped-up BS. That is the danger of those measures. You want to put sanctions on Russia as a government? Go right ahead. But to sanction athletes, businesses, private citizens' accounts ( so-called oligarchs ) is way above common law principles. Soon we will see those tactics used on us. We can not standby and tolerate the government to do that to one group because before you know it, WE could easily be that group at the whims of the government. Can't you see that?

It's the moral inconsistencies that I can't stand. People such as yourself have no moral compass to see wrong in one group but to find it justifiable when they do it. The Pentagon released a report called the Airpower Summary, the U.S has dropped 336,000 bombs in more than 10 different countries around the world in the last 20 years. We bomb Afghanistan not even two months ago, on the wrong target by mistake. Killed a bunched of innocent people. Where was the world outrage? You see as a realist that is a double standard. If you claim to be for a morally righteous stance, ( not invading or bombing other countries ) then you wouldn't tolerate Putin invading Ukraine and neither for the United States to do the same. after all that has been said by Biden and many members of the US Congress and its administration, and many bad and ugly officials against the Russian people, I doubt that they will ever sit at the same table with Putin. We are armed with weapons and 1,000 security guards armed to the teeth. I think you can only watch honey through the sniper line each other. Because not only Putin and the Russian Federation need to be judged for a military operation. This 200 and more years of hatred will not just end because no one will take their share of responsibility, or Americans because they are too arrogant or Russians because they are too proud. Now that the cards are fairly open, we know everything that happened in Ukraine 10-15 years ago, and now everything has finally come to light, and we know that America has participated in all operations and activities in Ukraine since the first Obama administration, including active participation of Biden Joe and his son Biden Hunt. In addition, the media in the US and the EU have cooked up a lot so far with their pro-Western propaganda and one-sided information, especially the EU and the US. So we cannot blame the Russian Federation for everything. As for Yanis' idea that in addition to the Russian oligarchs, the origin is being investigated, although more or less everything is known, and the confiscated property is distributed equally to everyone else in the world to those who contribute to this property and earn the most. A global revision and a new distribution of resources and wealth around the world would be very welcome. I think neither Russia nor China and the US would have any more interest in wanting like a rooster, who has a bigger one. Instead of supporting each other and allowing the whole world to develop and enable about the same standard of living in all countries, they are fighting for supremacy here, we just don't know what they are fighting for.

2:15 I guess most ordinary Europeans don't have a clue what people outside the West actually think about the whole situation, in particular many (probably a majority) are not aware that most Global South countries are not willing to join the Western sanctions against Russia. There's this widespread assumption that the rest of the world - except for a couple of rouge states - will always gather behind the West, and there's a remarkable lack of interests, why countries from the Global South would dare to reject the West's attempt to isolate Russia and destroy its economy in order to overthrow its government.

This is difficult enough for ordinary well-meaning people in the West to understand, but utterly impossible for their power-hungry, money-motivated politicians to even begin to grasp. The governments of the USA, its compatriots in the EU (especially Germany and France) and the UK have simply used Ukraine as a cats paw - these outlaws couldnt care a tinkers cuss for their own electorates, let alone the peoples of the Ukraine. Ordinary Ukrainians are far more likely to receive help and compassion from the soldiers of the Russian Army than they are from any disciple or protegee of the West and I hope and pray that once this conflict has reached its inevitable conclusion, the USA will no longer be in the driving seat of global politics and the West will be cold-shouzldered by all those who over the years have had to suffer its political machinations.

He presents Apathy as an excuse to allow Putin to commit genocide in Ukraine..., as an excuse to think that by doing nothing and sitting on the sidelines watching would mean a better tomorrow. These were the same sort of arguments regarding Nazi Germany as Hitler invaded countries and slaughtered millions.. The attempt at such peace talks when one part will never actually be sincere, is a fools errand. The only time Putin will agree to such a ceasefire is to buy himself time to regroup with the continued objective to annex Ukraine. This won't end in Ukraine unless we put an end to it in Ukraine! Apathy out of fear is going to get more innocent people killed than telling Russia and Putin to get out or get thrown out of Ukraine. The delusional thinking that this will magically get peacefully resolved is hilarious when Russia is all in and that their primary goal is to annex Ukraine and the Baltic states. You give Putin 1 inch and he will take a mile. People think this is simply about Putin's problem with NATO when it isn't.. Russia wants Ukraine for its resources, ports, land, oil, precious metals, and for its strategic location. As the world looks to go Green, Russia needs to expand as their economy is largely dependent on the export of their fossil fuels. If anyone thinks Russia will seriously come to the table with good intentions, they are arguably not the brightest bulbs on the Christmas tree.. What is even more amazing to me is how people didn't seems to believe or think Russia was going to invade Ukraine. Not even the Ukrainian government. I called this the day after they annexed Crimea.. My god, nobody ammasses that many forces on several flanks of a country with the intent to "do exercises / drills"... For Pete's sake, it was obvious for years! Regime change in Russia is as absultely necessary as was it so in Germany during WW II. Putin is already talking rhetoric in the lines of committing genocide in both Ukraine and in Russia... Biden is 100% right! Putin cannot remain in power..

I only suggest considering one thing, Biden is more of a serious threat to all of humanity as the commander-in-chief of the US armed forces, possibly more than Putin is. I don't think anyone saw this coming! I think the sh*t has hit the fan in the US because of surfacing verifiable facts that do more than imply his corruption, as well as alleged cover ups prior to voting etc, etc. Now he may not appear to be a loose cannon, right? Just a pathetic foreign relations negotiator who is quite senile. But, this man is in control of the US defenses, including nukes. He has 3 years remaining in his term of presidency, and I think in conjunction with the current world issues that he personally keeps escalating, he can expect a cauldron of hot water waiting for him and his son. I think he is too old, too compromised and in no way possessing the cognitive intelligence or integrity to hold the power of nukes in his hands during this high level stress. The world issues are serious and require exceptional leadership in order to de-escalate all this nuke talk. It would be like "War Games" the movie if one single nuke was fired anywhere! Under those considerations, we all need to think very clearly about things on the world stage.

In this case state-sponsored fascism as found in today's Russia and so exemplified by Putin threatens to infect the European body first with the Ukraine and then his eyes will be on Estonia Latvia and the rest. These people themselves know that. These people share the border. Those folks in Guatemala and Bolivia they don't share the border they have no immediate skin in the game hence they're reluctance if not cowardice is because they wish to turn their eyes from the spectacle.
