Yanis Varoufakis, Ann Pettifor and Noam Chomsky: A green future beyond capitalism

Ойын-сауық

"There is no alternative", "it's the end of history" in the shadow of the 2008 crash, the environmental crisis and ongoing COVID19 pandemic, never has the hubris of these words been more striking. Nevertheless if we are in fact at the end of an era, what comes next?
Join us in uncovering the exciting possibilities that the future can hold with public intellectual Noam Chomsky and economists Ann Pettifor and Yanis Varoufakis.

We’ve bought into the idea that education is about training and “success”, defined monetarily, rather than learning to think critically and to challenge. We should not forget that the true purpose of education is to make minds, not careers. A culture that does not grasp the vital interplay between morality and power, which mistakes management techniques for wisdom, which fails to understand that the measure of a civilization is its compassion, not its speed or ability to consume, condemns itself to death. ~ _Chris Hedges, Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle_

Education teaches what to learn, not how to learn, which diminishes people’s ability to work things out for themselves. Causes a lack of common sense( in my experience) which is needed to be radically critical of Authority, Society etc

47:47 *Neiloberalism in a nutshell* _”Marx described it, Thatcher was paraphrasing him probably unwittingly when she said that: I’m going to condemn the autocratic governments of the 19th century for wanting to turn people into a sack of potatoes; isolated, atomized individuals who cannot fight back against the attempt to turn them into virtual slaves-that’s basically neoliberalism, a form of class war which is quite old. It takes new forms and at every point (including property rights as you mentioned-a crucial point) the struggle can go on to take this away._ _There’s no reason why Bill Gates should be a multi-millionaire because he has monopoly pricing rights over Windows say, or that big pharma should be able to charge 10x the price of a drug because they have property rights granted to them or why Apple corporation can become very rich by rent, by using its property rights while somebody else does the work-these are not laws of nature. These are structures designed and imposed by the very wealthy, the corporate sector for their own interests and that has to be dismantled from top to bottom.”_

You do realise that if you dismantle Facebook and put it into public ownership it will degrade and become obsolete in 5-10 years? As much as I am against monopolies, I am also not convinced the government is the answer.. unfortunately governments are even a greater mess than private businesses are. At least in a business you have responsibility and accountability (the owner is the responsible and accountable and they apply their coercion from that role). In the public sector there is no ownership and there is no clear hierarchy. Everyone is fighting everyone for every little power and resource in the public sector. Trust me, I’ve worked in the public sector (a local council) and it is a fucking mess, I’ve never seen anything like it in the private sector. And nothing like that would survive in the private sector, they would lose all of their clients, all of their money and all of their resource. So, yeah, of course no one should have as much power as Facebook or KZread have.. but what is the solution? Is it as easy as “dismantle”? Or transfer to the public sector? Well, unfortunately probably not. The smartest thing is to let every party play out their strengths and their function. Let Facebook do what Facebook does the best (make money, improve their platform, use the profit to invest into the next conducive and solicitous project), but also let government do what it does the best (regulate, tax, redistribute).

Loved the video, very good and provocative analysis. However, I was put off by the term “rural idiocy” used by Yanis at one point in the discussion. Some of the most profound changes that need to happen to put in place the new economic system we are aspiring to are in agriculture, in the way we produce, distribute and consume food. In my work of almost 20 years with small farmers’ associations and cooperatives in one of the poorest regions of Brazil I have learned that these farmers are extremely intelligent, innovative and resourceful. With some modest but consistent investment, training and organizing over a 10-15 years period, we were able to build a small island of grassroots democratic socialism in one of the poorest and remotest areas of rural Brazil

@no info the romans and ancient greek werent capitalist and they gave us some of the most evolutionary systems that we currently use. "people in power" is a very loose term. People in power who have no accoutnability for their actions of course fuck around with people e.g. short term oriented exterior shareholders of a firm. Then take a solely employee owned firm for example, the employees each have power by having voting rights. But they dont "fuck around with people" because by doing so would negatively impact their own financial health. Its hard to develop an arguement agaist your statement that "People in power always have control and ability to fuck around with people, no matter the system" because its laughably vague. Socialism is in practice for example through the European public healthcare system. That is a socialist policy. Excusing the inequality that capitalism breeds by using the idiotic arguement that "well humans are inherently bad so it doesnt matter what system we use" is such a half ass lazy take. Capitalism allows the wealthy to get wealthier and create intergenerational weath which results in an exponentially growing divide between those who have the means to accumulate wealth and those who dont. i.e. shareholders versus the masses

This panel is describing a situation every non-comatose person knows about, either directly or indirectly., and Big Power, knows it better than anyone. I live in a reputedly advanced country, Canada, and during the last census in which I was forced under penalty of law to participate in, I was asked my age, the size of my house, number of rooms, number of occupants, and whether my husband or I had problems going up or down the stairs! Now, call me paranoid, but this seemed a little Orwellian to me. Especially as thousands upon thousands of those advanced in age - but still human, had died horrible deaths in highly profitable, privatized "Care Homes": were they looking for new investments in a whole new set of victims? Governments have pension money invested in these houses of horror. The situation is beyond reasoning with. We need action, and we need it now.

It does, to the extent that the state is allowing the civil society (or order) to fail as each atom of the collective of citizen security dwindles, but outside of this, it does not care, any more than it cares about climate change. Rather, the endurance of those who are already atomized is already compromised, the state instead relies on its reserve currency status to manufacture new money, per what we already know about MMT. It is not about taxation. It is about the longevity of organizations to withstand their own rapaciousness, and about that longevity occupying a less enduring cycle than its actual consequences (as in: each executives interest lasts for their lifespan, which lifespan is shorter than societies, insofar as society has a mandate for continuing its own subsequent generations) .

The advantage of their superior numbers is a disadvantage to the working classes because it makes them expendable in an offshore, globalized economy. One possible way might be non-participation : make-do, don't buy, recycle as much as possible, grow your own food and barter, and communicate and encourage each other in this endeavour. Less profit for big Corps, or (corpse), and less fossil fuel energy expenditure

Most human beings live along the coastlines of the world. Just one outcome of climate change is rising sea levels which threaten to permanently flood coastal regions where people live. There are properties and infrastructure worth hundreds - perhaps thousands - of trillions of adjusted dollars at risk of total destruction. Never mind the lost farmland and costs to agribusiness and all the people who like to eat regularly. Yet the world's politicians would ignore the loss of all that developed property and the interests of its owners so a few global oil oligarchs could get theirs. How does this work!?!

If you look at people putting bets in the stock markets against future positions, and also the futures market, it is all a fictional construct where people reap millions, even when there are real losses to producers should that future position come to pass. The financial markets have already taken off to a different "reality". The GFC should be a wake-up call for all.

@@BRIANJAMESGIBB well to me the donut is a good pictorial representation of what we ought to be committed to: _living sustainably, in balance with our world by reducing, reusing, recycling, ideally in a closed loop fashion._ The standard progressive wishlist.. My concern is that it’s just too naive, that it is too easy going on the historical abuses/crimes of capitalist enterprising/modern tech-feudalism. I think it ought to directly highlight the externalities of the collective bargaining problem, the problem of non-accountable corporate owner power into its model and make that more of the central argument. The “green zone” of the donut ring should not only talk directly about the virtue of inclusion/health blah blah-but also the virtue of excluding failed trickle-up ideologies like “shareholder primacy” (as shareholders are statistically and overwhelmingly not workers). To me this is where the donut is lacking-not that we can’t be positive, but that there should be a zero tolerance policy for any ideology advocating markets which are controlled almost solely by the 1%. Can a market which only has 10% worker representation really be said to be free? The US market is _clearly_ not guided by the people who produce it, but the handful of C-suite bosses/boards who own it. The donut should be used to speak out against this perversion of principle.

@@nightoftheworld I think your right on the money there. When I read Donut economics, all I could think about was how naive it sounds past the basic idea. Idealizing our needs and the needs of the planet as 2 boundaries is a great idea, but past that we can't actually use the donut in day to day decision making. There are way too many books with this exact same premise. Which is, "I want to solve all my problems once again with capitalism, but this time with a smile".

As an interim strategy cannot open source software not be held in ownership by cooperative common wealth trusts registered in various countries , with the right to charge those who seek to privatise/enclose benefits to themselves. These trusts can have the right waive any charges to those who work for the common benefit. Perhaps these instruments already exist in some form. DiEM might think of having branches that develop democratic enterprises that can function within the world as it is, as pioneering stepping stones to something different. Much can be learned from past mistakes and hopefully can evolve beyond being utopian.

It is so sad the the intellectual elite are currently (in this system) not the voices heard by the majority. It is the financial elite, which is not an authority in human benefit or reasonability at all. One thing Ann Pettifor mentioned 38:38, which was great, was to transform international benefits from 1% Masters to the 99% laborers to benefit. The truth is, in the bigger picture 100% of the world will benefit from switching to labor focus because it wouldn't force everyone to self destruct for the sake of a few people's OCD to maintain their addiction to money and power. We usually, in societies, lock people up who have mental illnesses that are harmful to themselves and others. The problem is that this is the dangling carrot in the rat race everyone has bought into in the modern zeitgeist, so it is hard for people to look down on this and want to penalize it, given it is the illusion of success.
