Yamaha THR30ii Effects Loop Tutorial for Loop Pedals

Музыка

Yes, it's a bit of a work-around, but the Yamaha THR does have an effect loop function. It's great for using a loop pedal live. Here it is:
First, open the app, go to settings, and make sure "Guitar Audio" is set to zero. Then, simply connect the output of the pedal to the auxiliary in put of the THR (1/4 inch to 1/8 inch cable required), and connect the line out of the THR to the input of the loop pedal. Set the playback volume of the loop pedal to match your input volume, and use the THR "Audio" knob to set your overall volume.

Thank you! I've been looking for this for a long time. I just have a question, where do you connect your guitar, I cant tell from the video.

Use the regular guitar input. I was using the Line 6 wireless option. I should have mentioned that in the video - great question. Thanks.

Awesome...do you notice that your tone dies at all when using the g10 wireless? I do, and reverted to either my Sennheiser wireless or a cable instead. But it would be nice to perfect the g10 for simplicity.

Yep. Totally agree. It's fine for practice, but there's noticeable tone (and volume) degradation if you listen for it.

I tried yesterday using a cheap Lekato lopper to the aux, then line out..I do have the same the high pitched squeel noise as soon as I record the first loop..both with acoustic guitar and strato..I set the guitar vol to zero via the app as suggested but the noise is still there. I am quite disappointed..any suggestion ?

I also get the squeals with my Boss Rc1. Just had set up the aux loop and it begun instantly after I turned the amp on... Got spooked :')

@@toukkis226 I used in the first attempt a stereo 1/8"cable and connector..with the mono cable and reducing "master" knob (i usually keep it all way up) , the situation improved. At least i could play with a decent clean making 1 loop plus a second with different layers on the same.

Like an effects loop, right? Never tried it, but I've heard people use the same setup that way. Should work, though the tone might not be the best.

Excellent video in that you reveal a process... loop to lead. Although over 60, I know nought about pedals and loops and am whacking videos to try and learn about wah and tube screamers or whattheheck. I am about to buy one of these amps this very day, as well as that Line6 G10 wireless doodad. By the way, you need to hear Amos Garrett's version of that Sleepwalk (is that right?) tune ... guy's a guitar god, but one who doesn't trumpet it. And ... that mandola grabs my eye. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aIR3j62kgq7PZM4.html

Yes - love the Amos Garrett version(s). This one is probably my favorite: kzread.info/dash/bejne/goZtwcGwZJqvos4.html And it's never too late to learn new tricks - enjoy the ride.

Is sound effected with this work around?

No. It will sound exactly the same. It's the same signal, it just takes a longer path before coming through the speakers. You may need to experiment with volume levels on your loop pedal to make everything even.

@@antiprise Unfortunately it does NOT sound the same at all. To check the difference, you can plug a good cable directly from the line out to the aux input (make sur to use the app to turn off aux output from the line out). Play some guitar with guitar knob at 100% (use master volume to lower the sound) and aux at 0. Then turn guitar knob at 0 and aux at 100%. The sound quality is MUCH better directly from the amp speakers (or headphones) than if it goes to the line out. I was wondering why some days I love the sound and some days I want to return it… and this was the reason. I think the aux output is not going through some modulation like noise gate because it’s optimized to go to a big speaker, not back to the yamaha.I don’t have a stereo cable to try but this might also degrade the sound quality to use a single cable.

@@sheoakYou are absolutely correct. I just checked it using your method (cable from line out to aux in with guitar volume off in app settings). The sound from the aux input is thicker, with brittle digital clipping when pushed - just generally not as good. And I'm not proficient enough with digital technology to know exactly why, but I think it has more to do with the uneditable parameters of the aux input than the line out. Excellent observation - thanks for sharing it.

You might be right, there is probably some DSP thingy to make the music sound better from the aux ; but  I think if the master is too high, as the output from the line in can’t be set, the signal received in the AUX is too strong and you get a bad sound. I realized it while plugin my speakers as they don’t have a volume control. So it might be a bit of both.

@@antiprise Update: the line out becomes stereo when you add build in effects like chorus or reverb. In that case it’s probably a good idea to keep it stereo using a stereo dual cable and only use stereo pedals. That can also be a reason for the aux sounding bad!
