Does the Yamaha THR30ii sound good with pedals?

Музыка

One of the most interesting questions I got from my video "5 Cool Ways to Use the Yamaha THR10ii" • 5 Cool Ways to Use the... was, can you use outboard pedals with the THR?
In this video, I think we found out that while, yes you can use pedals with the THR, it may not be the most optimal setup for you. In the video I'm using the "Flat Mode" most of the time, which sort of turns the THR into a 30 watt portable speaker, all the cabinet emulation is coming from the HX Stomp. At the end of the video, I turn off the HX Stomp IRs and use the THR speaker cabinet to provide the speaker voicing.
I hope you found this video helpful. If you would like to support what I do here on KZread, you can take a guitar lesson with me through my website, or buy one of my bands T-Shirts at one of the websites below.

I have mine set up with an effects loop by running the line out to the looper and back from the looper into the aux port (requires a mini cable plug). Turn down the guitar knob when you do the loop if you get feedback, and then turn it back up when the loop is playing. The aux runs into the power amp separately from the amp's effects, so you can then use different effects for the next loop or for playing lead. (A trick I learned from KZreadr Kevin Ilsen - thank you Kevin!) If your looper has a mic input (RC-300, RC-500 or others), you then have mic in, too. The same trick allows you to choose to put pedals in front or behind the amp's effects. All this, and it can run for a good long while on battery power. Wow.

  • @hillwellford9637

@@mikaelbodin9178 I don't think so, not unless you have a splitter of some kind. I just tried to figure out how to do it with my equipment, and couldn't. The problem is that the signal chain would go like this: guitar into the amp through the main input; sound out through the phones port to the looper; sound back in through the Aux input port. The amp is now silent, because plugging into the phones port kills the sound from the amp. You have sound running in a loop via the wires, great, but you can't hear it. If your looper has a second line out (or possibly a second line in, too?), or if you have another way to split the signal, then this could work--run that line to headphones or another amp. But the loopers I own won't do this and I don't have a signal splitter. Or you could use a microphone instead of sending sound out of the phones port! You need that additional line out somehow, so if it's not on the amp, it needs to be somewhere else. And I think you'd also be at risk of feedback issues. Doesn't seem like a practical solution--by the time you got extra equipment and a mess of wires, you'd be better off just buying an amp with a line out.

I’m doing this with my pedalboard and running the strymon iridium into the flat response mode on the thr. I use the reverbs and delays on thr too. Well handy if you want complete wireless rig that runs off battery. The strymon iridium has one of the best modelling sounds going I think

Also, something that people don’t really talk as much is how good the onboard effects are. The chorus and tremolo are incredible and the phaser and delay are some of the best I have ever heard. Literally studio quality effects. Using a wireless foot switch to turn them on and off I have found myself only needing a boost/od and wah to have everything I need pretty much.

I use TWO THRs in order to hear stereo with my Strymons, etc. When you have BOTH THRs…on either side of you…and you send your left and rights from your stereo Strymon chain? Holy crap. Its MAGICAL. If you need cabinet sims? Use an Iridium…and/or add the cabs via the THR app. Also worth adding… It is NOT a problem to send power directly into the input 1/4” on the THR! I’ve been doing it without worry for over a year on two THRii30 wireless units…and its stunningly good.

I've purchased a THR10II in the mean time and indeed I'm successfully running a Boss RC-10R looper into it to get some rhythm during practising (no complicated headphone/Aux construction, just in my guitar signal chain). This means only clean or flat yield acceptable drums, so I added a Keeley Super Phat Mod for drive, which works beautifully. The OC-5 will follow soon, but first I'm picking up a TC electronic plethora x5 for effects pre-looper.

I've tried running a few analog pedals through it, I first tried it with the flat setting like you have, but you kinda need the speaker simulation. So for a Marshall type distortion pedal, I tried it on the classic clean. It does the job, but doesn't sound as good as when its in front of a tube amp. The fuzz pedal was kind of fun, but again you need to run it on the flat or clean setting and it still sounds better through a regular amp. With all the tones the THR has to offer, I probably wouldn't use pedals with it. The delay on the unit could be improved a bit, but its certainly usable. This video is kind of like plugging another amp simulator and digital tone into a digital amp, so anyone with analog pedals, you can try and it will work, but not the same, at least for my ear.

I am confused. All THR amps are just that amps, they have modeling but are like any other guitar amp otherwise. I have the THR10c and use effects from both my HX Stomp and other pedals into it while using the THR amps. If I want to use an amp/cab (IR) from the stomp then I use the Flat option on the THR with all effects off on the amp itself, still using my other effects. I also play bass and have done the same, both direct and through the stomp, sounds great either way. These amps are super versital, sound great, and so far have handled anything I've thrown at it.

  • @DrewCreal

    1. Yes, you would just plug the wah in at the beginning of the signal chain. 2. You would get a wireless model or the THR30 because you may not always want to use pedals with your THR, you may actually want to just plug straight in, which the THR really excells at. Plus, it adds a lot of convenience and ease of use to have wireless.

I store the tones directly on the amp and further tweak them with the Remote or Control apps, then I save them to one of the 5 banks. If I accidentally save over a preset, it usually doesn't take me too long to get the tone back, since I spend a lot of time tweaking and I've gotten better at it. Hope that helps!

@@sjonestech1How does it compares with your processor plugged in front with flat mode? Thanks

@@sandroquinta1125 Sounds almost identical but you can get a wider stereo effect plugging in the front end due to the extra dsp added to the front end. If you want to keep maximum flexibility, tighter tone, and the full stereo operation of our processor use the stereo 1/8 input. My BOSS GT1 never sounded better!

Same! I do not recommend using pedals with the THR, it sounds great as it is!

I get what you're saying and I agree, but if you go simple with e.g. a Cry baby, it works perfectly fine to me for your "everyday use purposes" if you're in town for some wah.

Yeah I use pedals with my 10ii because the lead and high gain channels on it are unusable.
