Yamaha power tilt and trim relay diagnostic and replacement

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If you've followed me for a while, you've seen me replace a yamaha trim motor, seals in a yamaha trim assembly, and perhaps your trim still isn't working after following those videos.
It could be your trim relay.
This isn't a complicated thing to diagnose and replace, but it can be a pricy part, This motor uses part number 63P-81950-00-00.
so we're trying an aftermarket one today.
➡Here is the trim relay we used: amzn.to/3J6rJvq
I will update this description once we've had time to see if this relay will last!

    Great video! I have twin engines. Both tilt trim switches on the sides of both engines work fine. When I press the throttle switch (thumb button), only the port engine works, both up and down. The starboard engine, nothing. Also, the individual tilt trim switches on the base of the throttle control, only the port works. The starboard does not work. Could this also be relay related, or something in the helm? Thank you!

    If the buttons on the engines cowling works properly up and down then your relay and trim motor are fine, the problem is either the switch in the throttle handle, or something with the wiring from the handle to the motor.

    I agree. The thumb switch works for the port engine, just not the Starboard. I beive I read there are individual relays coming out of the throttle box. Thank you

    Great vid. I have a question. Our trim (Yamaha 200HP, 1996) is working just fine when going down. When going up only the lower pistons work. The one in the center doesn’t do a thing except for some noise. All seals have been replaced. Oil is ok. We tried the trim directly on the battery which gave us the same result. Have you got any idea?

  • @trythistv

    @trythistv

    I'd bet you've got some air in the system still, they all run off the same reservoir, and if the seals are good then likely you just don't have quite enough fluid to fill both of the side pistons and the center one. I would try adding fluid and trimming up gradually and see if it can raise further

    I have a tiller handle Yamaha and the trim works fine on the engine but on the tiller handle the trim up doesn’t want to work, I can get it to sometimes but it’ll go out would this be the fix for it? Or is it wiring in the tiller handle trim button

  • @trythistv

    @trythistv

    2 ай бұрын

    If it consistently works from the switch on the motor but not the tiller switch then it seems like it would have to be the wiring or most likely the switch on the tiller handle, it probably sees a lot more use than the one on the motor, could just be the switch is worn out.

    Do you have a video of checking the tach on a 90hp yamaha 4 stroke

  • @trythistv

    @trythistv

    11 ай бұрын

    I do not, They are quite simple though, I believe the grey wire from the engine feeds the tach, Some are a stator winding, others are alternator sensing, depends on what motor exactly. I see a lot of actual tachometers fail, very rarely the wiring or engine side stuff.

    My motor only blows a fuse when I trim it down and works fine when I trim up. Is it a good guess that the down relay is bad?

  • @trythistv

    Yep, Likely one side of the relay is shorted to ground

    My 2014 F150 will go down but not up using both cowling and throttle switches. No click when I push up. I replaced the relay and still the same. If i reverse the blue and green wires, I can raise the tilt using the down button in this reversed configuration. Could both switches have failed or could my replacement relay be defective? seems unlikely. Thanks!

  • @trythistv

    I would wonder if maybe the up trigger wire to the relay could be faulty, it would be rare to get a bad relay out of the box, but it could happen. I would check to see if the 12v signal is getting to the relay to switch it, and trace backwards from there, I don't have the wire color codes in front of me right now, but you should be able to see them at the trim switch that is on the motor cowl easily and test the switch with a multimeter

  • @marley6275

    @marley6275

    @@trythistv That is the next step. Since I could not raise the motor using the remote or cowl switches, I just assumed the relay was bad. Probably a bad assumption. It's odd that neither switch functions to raise the motor if it is a single faulty switch.

  • @trythistv

    Diagnostics are often a bit vague, replacing the relay is an obvious and easy first step, but since that wasn't the problem it means more digging.

    Can we see the new solenoid wired up? What did you change on it?

  • @trythistv

    @trythistv

    11 ай бұрын

    The solenoid comes as a whole packaged assembly basically, it technically has 2 relays in it basically, which both normally connect to negative, and pushing the trim button sends positive power to one lead or the other so it reverses the direction of the motor. it plugs in to one connector and gets a couple wires attached with ring terminals, does both directions. If one of the relays fails, it'll typically remain stuck connected to ground so you will have one direction the trim will work and the other won't do anything.

    @@trythistv okay thanks, we had issues with our 2012 f90, changed the solenoid, changed the button, changed the motor and now it seems like solenoid issues again, it won't try to move up or down but if I put direct power on it, it moves

    Anyone have a Yamaha F40 2000? From all videos I can see, the trim relay is well accessible, but on a 2000, only half of relay (if not third) is accessible, other half is way to deep in metal casing!! According to repair diagram, the relay has only 1 screw (where accessible) that holds it on to casing, but even with that screw out, relay wont budge :(. I can only test green, which already works on switch... there is no way i can get to blue connection.
