Tilt Trim Relay - Tilt Trim was not working in my boat

Ойын-сауық

Is my tilt trim relay bad in my boat? In this video I do some more troubleshooting to find out why the tilt trim was not working in my boat and why my Volvo Penta SM DP outdrive had been stuck in the down position. The switch in my boat did not do anything, but I had previously determined that the motor and hydraulics worked. In this video I remove the tilt/trim motor assembly to access the marine grade relays and electrical connections to see if I can identify what is preventing it from working.
▶︎ In the last video, (see it here - • Tilt Trim Not Working ... ) I was able to direct wire my tilt trim motor to the battery to raise my engine that had been stuck in the down position since I bought the boat.

I was having the same problem where the trim wasn't working. But my fix was over on the other side of the motor on the manifold. There is a fuse block and on the front of it with a nut and stud. Pulled the black cover off and in there was a ground wire for the trim pump cleaned it up and works great...for FREE.

My trim suddenly stopped working on a 5.0GL 98 Glastron Se195; no relay clicks, just dead, outdrive in up position. After testing switch on throttle control, then chasing power from the relays back to where they terminate back at the engine it turned out I had a bad 50A breaker. The red push button one up on the exhaust riser. Hot wiring the trim system red w/purple power feed (for test purposes) to the battery + restores normal trim operation and I’m gonna be back on the water for under $40 with an aftermarket breaker and under an hour of work. Thanks Wayne for sharing your boat repairs and helping others have a little better knowledge when digging in.

I just found out that my trim works okay. After hot wiring it, from wayne's instructions, i did raise the outdrive that way. I found that trim does work as long as the key is in the accessories position, using the buttons on the throttle handle. I just bought the boat.

Good job - it's always a win when it's a simple thing, easily fixed. Of course on boats, those 'simple things' are always hidden in a spot that you have to be either a 'little person' or an accomplished contortionist to get to. I well remember having to wrap myself around the motor to get the plugs out on my Seville 21 MC a few years back. I think I will stick with outboards...

We have a 5.0L Volvo Penta that when my husband parked it at home he tapped our fence, and now the outdrive is stuck in the up position. I don’t think cleaning relays or fuses will fix that so do you have any other suggestions we could try in case that actually doesn’t work?

Great video. I have an 01 Stingray 190LS with the 3.0 Penta SX. My trim/tilt works fine but the needle in the gauge either sporadically freaks out or gets stuck in the fully up or down position. Would you know how to test whether its the gauge or the sender?

  • @WayneTheBoatGuy

    @WayneTheBoatGuy

    3 жыл бұрын

I think it's a 2 person job, but I "think" if you jump the connections at the sender, it should read either all up or all down at the gauge. If it does, I would replace the sender. Sometimes the senders go bad, and other times it's a ground wire issue. I think the gauges typically last longer than the senders. My sender is not working at all.

  • @WayneTheBoatGuy

@@Gsquared_08 connect the two wires that run to the unit itself on the outdrive. You might need to do this in the engine bay by the transom where the wires go through to the outdrive. That might be the only connection point.

There is a trim sensor that mounts to the side of the outdrive. It's usually about 3" round and has a wire or two coming to it. Mine is bad as well, and the wire had been cut going to the sensor.

Great informative video. I just got my first boat aswell, and my tilts not working either it seems. I'm hearing the sound from the electric motor, so i'm guessing it's working, - but it just doesn't seem to go down. I want it horisontal for the winter, but seems i've got some work ahead of me, - unless you've got any clever ideas? :-)

Why did you not replace the relay holders when you had the access ?? It would have fixed the problem rather than patching up. You will have to do the same thing in the future those connection are toast. It would have been an easy fix just snip the wires put in the new relay holders connect wires heat shrink them, Job done. You now have the chance of an intermittent trim / tilt, leading to a complete failure for sure. The thing is you had all the stuff removed so its not fixed just patched

  • @WayneTheBoatGuy

You bring up a really good point! However, I will likely have to order those relay holders and it would likely be a few weeks before I could install them. For now I can raise my outdrive to remove the props, lower it to check oil and store it for the winter. I'm also not certain the motor, pump, and other components are going to have a long life either. If they've been getting rained on through that wash-down hole and not being used for a few years, they might all fail me next year. Next on the list is a new wash-down door to stop the flow of water on assembly! And for me personally, just knowing where the system is, how it's set up, and that it has the potential to work is huge.

  • @andytinline7717

@@WayneTheBoatGuy I have been where you are learning as i went. The motor and hydros should be OK its the way the relay holders are positioned, looks like the water was just pooling in them and rotting away. See if you can get the relays holders it would be a good job done over the winter. You have the access just now so this is the best shot you will have at it with out taking the pump out. The holders are common the only thing that makes a waterproof one is they have a lid-housing to keep the water off. Just buy a set from ebay, install them spray a larger amount of T9 over the complete relay and bracket. That will-should out last the motor. Hope this helps, we are all learning something new every day.
