I came from cycling background and can see some advantage with a trigger shifter especially when going off road, but other than that it's a solution for a problem which does not exist. The thing about every manufacturers going AT is that they found out young people nowadays are not getting motorcycles license anymore, some corporate genius thought that's because MT is too difficult to learn. But in reality that's because motorcycle has always been a cheap form of transport and that part has gone obsolete by the emergence of e-bikes/skate board alike. People also got poorer.

I think the Honda X-ADV 750 is the best example? There are consumers who wants that kind of auto transmission especially on Asian markets, there are more auto transmissions users like scooters mostly and if they want to step up to bigger motorcycles without worrying on the limited options, atleast they can choose what they want to buy.
