Yamaha FX-1 FM based organ
General overview of the very large and ground breaking FM instrument from Yamaha in 1983. Sold for around 35K or more, it was the flagship of FM organ technology at the time. That same year, the DX-1, DX-7, DX-9 were introduced. This organ weighs 507 pounds. The bench is nearly 154 pounds with the pedals being 55 pounds. That's over 700 pounds!
This is the story of how I got this organ...

I was extremely lucky as a child to have an FX-3 back in the early 90s at home to learn on. The moving sliders was a wow feature, although several of them stopped functioning on our organ over time and we had to have them repaired. My parents were kind enough to let me have the organ at home including the giant TX1 speaker cabinet (only 1 on the FX-3). This organ will always hold a special place in my heart, although of course it was superseded quickly technically.
Still sound very nice
Thank you very much for this excellent demostration.
I remember this. I worked for a company that sold these, as well as a number of Yamaha and Casio keyboards. One of the things that the FX series had was a Floppy Drive accessory, where you could load what amounted to MIDI files, although General MIDI had not yet been implemented. I believe it also had the capability of using a small EPROM cartridge, although that might not have been until the later HX-1.

I have that disk drive. It doesn't use standard 3.5" floppies. It uses a 3" I believe. It also looked ugly hanging under the keyboard. So I have it in a closet.
My organ from Yamaha! I had always wanted one of these, I love the style and design, as well as the sounds. Auto accompaniment were great!
love the rhythm patterns! thanks for sharing
Amazing instrument, and an excellent demonstration and playing. Well done sir.
very rare indeed and such a magnificent instrument
What a beautiful instrument!! Great for gathering a 3 piece band with a killing drummer and a singer- bass player
I need a Yamaha synth organ in my life
Well, the YC-61 has better effects (and samples). What a lovely piece of hardware. Gotta love the 40 year old build quality. This would have been an amazing kit to have in a studio then.
You are a lucky man to own one!
Thanks for this video! I really like the FS/FX Electone series organs so much! Miss the little solo keyboard at the top too! Sigh...if only I had an FX triple manual Electone organ at home....Although I have an Electone Stagea at home, I personally feel that all Electone models are UNIQUE....!
I had a FX20 , still have my HX1
Enjoyed the demo. I used to own (and still play) a Yamaha 415 (D85). I can see similarities in the two instruments.

real nice electric organ
first time seeing one 😮
omg. you really had me when i saw the motorized faders.. awesome! now i really want it! :D my first organ at the age of 7 in the 80s was a tiny electone MC-200, which also used FM technology. but it was very limited in its capabilities, no sound editing, no dynamic keyboard aaaand NO MIDI :( ... so i traded it for a SY55 some years later (i still have it). but i remember that my organ teacher had a photo of an organ that looked quite like this FX-1 in her office... maybe i should start some research if she still exists ;) .. and that organ of course ;D

These are pretty rare. Yamaha used motorized sliders on other models at the time. They did turn out to be somewhat problematic. The good thing is if the slider doesn't move properly, it doesn't affect programmed sound. They just give visual indication.
What a monster
Damn I want that Organ, I like this style well at least I got a Yamaha DX7 from 1983

Amazing sounds you can do with these Yamaha Chips. Better controllable and cheaper with a DX7 and some guitar pedals afterwards.
Holly Cow! I had never seen one of these. My word. You could set this up on 3 midi keyboards today for under 2k! Hahaha! $35,000 for this. And now it's worth maybe what? 2k.

Yeah in 1983 these realistic sounds may have been worth the money if you were a big studio that could afford it. But nowadays I recon you could get the same versatility from a NORD

Are you sure the percussion is sampled? I'm pretty sure they were using FM for the percussion sounds too, as this organ predates AWM, which came in with the HX-1, HS, HE, HC series.

Yes. It has “Rhythm Sound Wave Data” ROM’s on the OPCS board.
@organfairy

@@geoelectro It could be both. Elka used sampled sounds for some of their percussion in the mid 80's and synthesized sounds for the rest. That triangle sound on the bossa nova rhythm sounds very synthetic to me.

@@organfairy That's true. FM makes great bell and percussion sounds.

There are 6 ROMs listed as Rhythm Sound Wave Data ROM. They even have what sounds are in each ROM. There are more sounds per IC for shorter duration sounds. For example, HH, Open, HH, Closed, SD Light, Hand Clap in one ROM. In another IC it has one Cymbal. Just like wave memory, it takes more memory for longer sounds. If this was just Data for an FM generator, the sizes would all be the same I think.🤔
Great demo, and I'm really glad you've put this together. I've got an FX-3, which I love, and two TX-1s. I'm wondering if you can help figure out what the differences are between the FX-3 and FX-1. Here's what I know so far: FX-1 adds a few additional patches (e.g., Brass 3, Hawaiian Guitar) and the upper/lower couplers, but I think it loses the Play Assist feature. Other than that, they seem to be pretty identical. As an aside, I'm adding a MIDI clock sync to an E-70 soon and hope to do the same to the FX-3.

Physically they were obviously different in look, more keys/pedals on the FX1 etc. The FX-3 was technically identical to the FS-70, apart from the speakers obviously.
hello, how can one find out suppliers of Yamaha FS70 ready for shipping
Yamaha FX-1, it's evol! nothing compared to my DX-100 or TQ-5, maybe i'll use two or three keyboards thru a merger box with the TQ the next day to imitate the FX-1 after your video

What's the difference between the FX1, FX3, FX10 and FX20?

The FX1 and FX20 are nearly the same. The FX20 is in a wooden cabinet. The FX3 is a spinet size. (Smaller) The FX10 is the same as the FX20 without the third manual.

@@madness8556I thought the FX-3 was closer to the FS-500. However, the FX-3 service manual indicates you are to use it with the FS-500 AND FS-70 manuals in order to cover the FX-3 circuits. I guess it has some of both in it.
