Yagyu Shingan-ryu Katchu Heiho - 42nd Japanese Kobudo Demonstration (2019)

Hoshi Hiroaki Kunio Sensei and his students demonstrating Yagyu Shingan-ryu Katchu Heiho during the 42nd Nihon Kobudo Embutaikai held at the Nippon Budokan on February 3rd, 2019. The event also commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Nihon Kobudo Kyokai.
Yagyu Shingan-ryu harbors different styles such as Heiho-jutsu and Tai-jutsu. The former was founded by Takenaga Hayato but the school itself was setup by Tatewaki Shindo. Originally called simply Shingan-ryu, the school was later renamed Yagyu Shingan-ryu because of the influence of Yagyu Shinkage-ryu.

Why did the japanease not like to hold a shield in one and a blade?

They just didn't need them. They had armor to protect them. Most japanese weapons are also two handed so no hands for a shield. They had moving walls that sometimes are used as shields or put on their backs when running from arrows.

when the samurai used the tachi but that was mostly on horseback

This is a bit of a misconception. Yes the tachi was effective on horseback but if you look at iconography, samurai on the foot throughout the 11th 12th 13th 14th and 15th centuries still mainly used tachi. They even used it as the predominant sidearm of the 16th century but the katana and the katate-uchi started to gain a bit more popularity. People like to make up the narrative that the katana was somehow better than the tachi or the katana phased out the tachi on the battlefield or the katana was made very early on in samurai history when none of that is true. It only ever phased out the tachi in the 17th century when peace was brought to Japan. The fact is: Tachi were better battlefield weapons and katana were better civilian weapons. The tachi was not only for horseback. Edit: the only real advantage the katana has over the tachi is that katana are a bit lighter and are quicker to draw from the waist which is why they were more popular in a civilian setting.
