Interview with Horii Etsuji Shihan, 7th Dan Aikikai and former uchi deshi at the Aikido Hombu Dojo under the direction of Ueshiba Kisshomaru Nidai Doshu.
-- SUMMARY --
0:00 - Start
0:49 - Where are you from and how did you start Aikido?
1:59 - Had you ever visited Hombu Dojo before you entered as an uchi deshi?
3:28 - The role of Otomo is only occasional isn't it?
5:31 - Who were the Shihan in charge of teaching at that time?
7:26 - Do all uchi deshi have to become professional Aikido instructors?
7:38 - What is the most important thing you remember from your time as an uchi deshi?
8:28 - Most uchi deshi become Hombu Dojo instructors, why did you decide to leave Hombu?
11:50 - There is no weapons practice at Hombu Dojo, what style of weapons do you teach and where did you learn it from?
12:45 - People often do Iai or Katori, but we know that O Sensei mainly studied Itto-ryu and Shinkage-ryu...
15:20 - What is the origin of your organization's name, the Aioikai?
16:19 - What do you teach when you visit dojos who follow a different Shihan?
16:56 - Do you feel that you can show your own "advanced" Aikido in that context?
17:49 - Often, the level of ukemi is quite mixed in large seminars, how do you approach this?
18:55 - In weapons practice, there is a defined role for uketachi, but the role of uke doesn't seem as well defined in Aikido...
21:02 - You Aikido reminds me of that of the late Chiba Kazuo Sensei, did he have much influence on you?
21:19 - But you seem to be teaching often at dojos affiliated with Chiba Sensei's organization, the Birankai, aren't you?
24:25 - You said that your parents were from Osaka, what brought you to Sanda?
26:19 - What are the main values that you want your stuents to learn from you?

Hi there! I live in Japan and I'm 26, I've never practiced a martial art in my life but I want to find a new life passion. I would like to see if Aikido could be that for me. I have 3 tattoos, one on my back and 2 on my right side, so not visible. Do you think I could attend the Hombu Dojo with the tattoos that I have?
