Yaesu FTdx10: VOX Operation with headset (video #33 in this series)
Ғылым және технология
My good friend Joel, KC4WZB, loaned me his brand new Yaesu FTdx10. When I say loaned, I mean he picked it up at Ham Radio Outlet and brought it straight to me, so I could unbox it and shoot a series of videos, exploring the capabilities of this latest offering from Yaesu.
VOX operation can be a fun way to communicate. Your hands are free to do other things, such as logging or making notes. This can be handy during portable operation, like SOTA, POTA, or Field Day. Some people prefer to use VOX with a headset microphone combination. We will explore VOX operation with a headset in this video.
This is video number thirty-three in this series.

This is a much needed video to explain what seams like a simple topic but is actually rather complicated with all the options and potential configurations that need to be addressed. I wish I had this video when I bought my FTdx10.
My preferred way to operate when doing DX.

Oh yes! I like hands free.
Btw I like 800ms for rag chew and 400ms for things like POTA and contests. Easy to play with it if you select VOX Delay in the menu and use the FUNC knob and tune it to your operating style.

Love the video. I followed/did everything, but the VOX on my FT-710 isn't working, though. Any tips on what/how to troubleshoot? Is there another setting I need to change? Thanks and 73, Ken KN2D

What type of microphone? Is VOX SELECT set to Mic in the Operation Settings > TX General menu? Do you have PRESET enabled in the mode menu?

@@n4hnhradio Fixed! The VOX SELECT wasn't set to mic. Thanks! 73, Ken

@KenCountess You’re very welcome! Watch out for the PRESET. I never use it, even for FT8. But, if you do use it, it has to be disabled for voice modes.
I read somewhere that the reason airline pilots all say the stereotypical “uuuuhh” before they start speaking is to key the VOX. There’s got to be a pilot in your membership that could verify that… 73 de KD2TJU / Todd

There is a 767 pilot among the Patreon team. He says no VOX to air traffic control, but sometimes they keep the mic hot to talk to one another on the flight deck.

Hi there, I'm sitting here messing with the memory card settings in the radio. It would probably be a good training video on how to save profiles for different microphones. What do you think? K5NAR

I can do that. I save mine with hmic or PR781 at the end of the file name.

@@n4hnhradio I've had the radio for atleast a year now and really never thought about doing it. I now realize the naming "Menu vs Memory List" is kind of confusing. It would seem like mic settings would be in menu and memory would only be frequencies.
@n4hnhradio
Жыл бұрын
That is correct. The memories are the frequencies you programmed into the memory slots. Menu parameters, such as TX audio, RX audio, and others that are included in my menu optimizations PDF, are saved under the menu file. It’s the same as with RT Systems software.
I'm assuming your PR781 is the gold "PR781G" with the Dynamic Element?
@n4hnhradio

Yes, it is the dynamic element. I prefer it.
I have a radiosport head set and it keys the radio but no audio is transmitting? Is there any other settings that I might need to look at?
@n4hnhradio

If the stock mic transmits audio, the headset should also. Wiring would be my first suspicion. What are you using for PTT?

@@n4hnhradio Thank you for the reply , normally iI have a foot switch same make as yours. however, I do have a 781 mic on a boom I should try that first (didn't think of that senior moment) if that works i'm guessing wiring like you are thinking.

Some people inadvertently set to use a rear port for audio input, like running digital modes. But you can set up the FTdx10 per mode. So SSB can be set to the front while PSK/DATA is set to rear. But, if the 781 works, it isn’t an issue with a menu setting.

@@n4hnhradio thanks I’m going to check that I’m assuming mode SSB setting.
When I use vox with my headset, I notice that my meter dose not move when on alc or power. Is this normal?
@n4hnhradio
Жыл бұрын
You should see ALC indication and PO movement. The PO meter reads average power, so don’t expect to see. 100W, or even much more than 50 to 60W. Check VOX gain.

Ya. I do understand that from your videos. But my radio keys but I have no movement on alc or power. But when I use a foot switch it keys and moves the alc and power meter.

Are you running the latest firmware? Have you tried a reset? One of my viewers had that issue and a reset solved it for him.
