Unboxing the Yaesu FTdx10 (Video #1 in this series)

Ғылым және технология

#yaesu #hamradio #ftx10
My good friend Joel, KC4WZB, loaned me his brand new Yaesu FTdx10. When I say loaned, I mean he picked it up at Ham Radio Outlet and brought it straight to me, so I could unbox it and shoot a series of videos, exploring the capabilities of this latest offering from Yaesu.
Note: I realized after I shot the video that I had left my laptop computer power supply plugged in upstairs. So, some of the noise floor you see in this video is from the computer. It’s good to know that this radio can mitigate the noise so well.
I hope you enjoy this video and find it helpful. There are 97 FTdx10 tutorial videos thus far on the Patreon site. Most of the operating techniques I teach for the other Yaesu radios can also apply to the FTdx10.

    Hi Doug, you probably know but its worth saying that your great FTdx10 series of video's (and the others) are not just for the new operators. As a licence holder for over 40 years I have never been taught how to get the best from any HF set until now. Sure we had a much more in depth and technical examination back in the day but the study simply taught the less technically minded amongst us, what we needed to know to pass the exam. It did little to actually give us the real understanding that is required to get the best out of a transceiver, even the comparatively simpler ones we had then. So I just wanted to pass on my gratitude, I now feel much better prepared to operate my new FTdx10 and more importantly, to get the absolute best from its capabilities.

    Thank you so much, Jack Of All Trades! It is my goal to help everyone get more from their transceiver. That was the impetus of this channel. I saw people trading more capable transceivers for less capable, just because the less capable was newer technology. But I would be remiss if I didn’t give credit to the Patreon team long-haulers (Patreon.com/N4HNH). They help me avoid aligning with manufacturers, which would prevent me from publishing objective content. Sometimes newer benefits the manufacturer more than it does the purchaser. The IC chips reduce the cost of manufacturing, though some Integrated Circuits cannot effectively perform some tasks as well as the discrete component versions of old could, no matter how clever the programming. I believe the FTdx10 to be the best of the new breed. It has its flaws too - every radio does. But the flaws in the FTdx10 are not in critical areas, except maybe the DNF (distortion with strong signals), and a less effective noise blanker than some of the traditional noise blankers, such as my Yaesu FT-890/AT or my FT-920. But, where it counts most, the FTdx10 is amazing. The superior Digital Noise Reduction and razor sharp filtering make up for the less effective noise blanker. Don’t get me wrong. The noise blanker can be effective. It just doesn’t beat the traditional noise blanker in my older transceivers. But my older transceivers cannot come close to the dynamic range of the FTdx10. There are always trade-offs. The FTdx10 is a contest class transceiver when it comes to pulling out weak signals with strong signals operating on a nearby frequency. Enjoy your FTdx10. I’m sure you will. I see that you commented on the unboxing video. That’s great! I suggest viewing the videos in numerical order. There are well over 90 videos as I write this. 73, Doug

I have spent many months watching various videos, intending to make the best purchase possible for an HF radio that I'd be happy with for a long time. Tonight, I bought the FTdx10 while it was on sale. Your videos were completely influential and I appreciate them greatly. Thanks so much for what you (and Joel) have done to guide my purchase and further my interest and enjoyment. From what I have seen Yaesu seems to really get this right, although all new radios by the major manufactures seem to be pretty good. I think its the understand of the radio, settings and operator skill that can really make the radio shine. Thank you for letting me know. The videos are numbered, ranging from basic operation to more advanced. I removed Video #33 because too many people misinterpreted it and I was having to spend too much time addressing that. It’s okay though because a later video addresses that subject. There are approximately 70 videos in the FTdx10 playlist. The more you master that transceiver the more you will understand why Yaesu outsells everyone and there is not even a close second. And I say that objectively. I’m not a Yaesu fanboy. I just want the most for my money and Yaesu almost always wins that contest. 73 and welcome to the channel! Doug

    You won’t get an argument from me on that. I like the FT-891 so much I bought two. I bought the first one in 2018, when they were $579.95. I used that one for SOTA hikes. In 2019 I bought the one for my truck. I’ve also used the first one as a base station, with a MD-100 desk mic. You probably saw those videos in the FT-891 playlist. And I like the menu system in the FT-891. The way I operate in my truck, using memory tune, I rarely touch anything but the multiknob and the VFO. In the video where I put the receiver of the FT-891 up against the FTdx10, FTdx5000MP, and the IC-7300, the FT-891 beats the IC-7300 and it fairs very well against the FTdx10 and the FTdx5000MP.

    Awesome video just replaced my ft710 with a dx10 I love it. One question I'm running a ldg z100a antenna tuner it plugs into my linear port and when I set my internal to external my one in my radio still works lol

  • @n4hnhradio

    @n4hnhradio

    5 күн бұрын

    The FTdx10 has separate Linear and Tuner ports. The LDG doesn’t track the VFO during receive, like MFJ auto-tuners do (i.e. MFJ-939Y or MFJ-998). The Tuner port supports bidirectional communications between the transceiver and the antenna tuner. LDG chose not to take advantage of that bidirectional communications capability. The menu selection in the FTdx10, to choose an external antenna tuner, only applies to the Tuner port. It causes the Tuner button on the FTdx10 to control an external antenna tuner, like the MFJ-939Y or the MFJ-998, if such a device is plugged in. The LDG is plugged into the Linear port. The LDG is only using the Linear port for a transmit ground. The LDG only senses the frequency change when you transmit. It then records any previous match parameters that you recorded during a “Train Your Tuner” setup procedure. I have a video about that. The Tuner port also provides a transmit ground. I don’t know why LDG chose to tie up the Linear port for a tuner function. The Linear port also sends band change data to a linear amplifier. It is best to hook an antenna tuner to the Tuner port, so a linear amplifier can be connected to the Linear port. The exception would be in the case of something like the Elecraft KPA-1500, where the antenna tuner is integrated into the linear amplifier. It gets its data, and transmit ground, from the Linear port. The Elecraft KPA-500/KAT-500 combo works similarly. It uses the Linear port for antenna tuner and linear amplifier control. Just be sure to keep the internal tuner in the FTdx10 off when using an external antenna tuner. Don’t ever touch the Tuner button. You don’t want the internal antenna tuner to compete with the external antenna tuner.

    I plan to do a comparison of the DNR between the two. The DNR in the FTdx101D didn’t seem as good as the one in the 5000. But both are great. The FTdx101 still had the “watery” digital artifact when I compared it to the FTdx5000MP. Maybe the DNR algorithms are improved in the FTdx10. I heard that the new firmware update for the FT-891 is improved. The FTdx10 uses the same DSP chip as the FT-891, FT-991A, and FTdx101D/MP. The chip is from Texas Instruments. I suspect that the improvements in the FTdx10 sparked the update of the FT-891. I haven’t installed the update in my FT-891 yet. I still like the 5000MP best, because it can do everything the FTDX10 does but with knobs. And it has a variable preselector and 2 separate receivers. I never realized what an advantage it is to have two receivers until I started chasing rare CW DX stations who use split. I can temporarily turn on the B receiver to find where the other stations who are chasing the DX are transmitting. The CW DXers don’t always listen just 1kHz up. I listen for the other chasers and then I know where to transmit at with my B transmitter. I think Sherwood should have reviewed the 5000MP. @ N4HNH I was looking at Elecraft. And they sure are nice Radios. I sure would like to get one . nice SDR radios. there K4 Transceiver is very nice and come in 3 options. Very costly rigs, but very nice radios with lots of input like the Yaesu FTDX101D/MP. If I had the money Saved right now for the Elecraft I would be purchasing the Yaesu FTDX101MP for sure. I just thought it was interesting there top rig the K4HD was made a lot like the Yaesu's FTdx10/101D/MP dual superheterodyne, SDR, FTDX10, FTDX101D/MP with the Yaesu's having a 9MHz IF The K4HD has SDR, dual superheterodyne and has filters Like the FTDX10,101D/MP. Elecraft calls there K4's hybrid designs to. Just thought you might find this interesting . from there site:: Model K4 Basic K4 transceiver provides 160-6 m, all-mode coverage; 100 W output; five receive RF sources; and wideband dual watch, allowing the main and sub receivers to be set for the same or different bands. Model K4D Adds KRX4 option, with a second set of band-pass filters and additional direct-sampling ADC module. This allows the two receivers to use different antennas - a requirement for diversity receive. Having two sets of band-pass filters also optimizes signal handling when the receivers are on different bands and/or antennas. Model K4HD Includes all of the above, plus our dual superhet module, the K4HD. Ideal for competitive field day, contesting, and DXpedition stations. Each superhet receive section includes two crystal filters: one SSB/data bandwidth, one CW bandwidth. The superhet’s 8 MHz IF has an excellent dynamic range, so additional crystal filters are not required. And the Icom 7851 the top Icom has a mixer called (local oscillator)to get a contester & DXers edge radio like the Yaesu's FTDX10/101D/MP. I guess my pointe to all this is Yaesu give you a Hell of a lot of Radio with the FTDX10 and at a very reasonable $ Price. The way thing are I think they may raise it's price some eventually. Happy New Year to You N4HNH, I still watch all your FTDX10 video & a lot of them more than once always looking for a new one. Out of all my Radios the FTDX10 is my favorite and gets fired up every day.

    Hi Jay! A member of the Elecraft technical support staff told me about the HD version back in May of 2020. He expected it to beat the FTdx101D/MP. I said, “that’s a tall order.” I spoke with Eric Schwartz at the Huntsville Hamfest in August 2022 about the K4HD and when it might be released. He said in about 6 months. The HD is a plug-in module for the K4D that will add the superheterodyne front end. I asked him about his expectations regarding the dynamic range. You can see his response in the Huntsville Hamfest video. It’s interesting that the K4D doesn’t even beat it’s predecessor, the K3S, in the dynamic range ranking on Sherwood’s list.
