Yaesu FT-DX10 HF Transceiver - Is it Right for You?
We take a look at one of the most recent HF transceivers to come onto the ham radio market. Could this be the new FT-101E that was one of the best sellers of the 1960s? Peter Waters G3OJV, takes a look and reports on his three weeks of using this radio.

The FTDX10 uses a hybrid SDR architecture, while the IC7300 uses a direct sampling SDR. The hybrid SDR delivers better performance in the presence of strong signals in the passband, because the narrow roofing filter attenuates those signals before they can overload the A/D converter. In the 7300, the A/D converter is wide open to the entire passband. I'm in CM97, which has an extremely high concentration of hams, so I have a lot of strong local signals. I'm also an old American ham, but as an engineer, I've been learning new tricks all my life. Maybe it's not for everyone, and I respect that, but the FTDX10 looks like it is the right radio for me. I'll be upgrading from a FT-450D.
Hi Peter, nice honest review. I have always been, pretty much a Yaesu customer for most of my ham radio career. After a break of many years, like many others, I came back into ham radio because of lockdown. I got out my FT747GX, and off I went. The realisation soon became apparent, that maybe something more modern was required. I bought a Yaesu FT991a and have to say I was delighted with it, and the FT747GX was then relegated to Hf standby. Just recently I got the Icom IC9700 for 2m/70cm/23cm, probably the first marque change in all of 35years. Sadly, the FT747GX lost its drive, and I replaced the driver transistors, only for them to fail again. So I needed to back up the Hf side of things, and am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my FT10DX this Monday. I have now experienced the major changes in ham gear from many, many years ago to the present date and have to say how amazing these modern transceivers are. Anyway Peter, once again for a very fair review, take care. 73’s Geoff. (G4SQJ).
Thank you for such a great unbiased look at the FT-DX10 vs the competition and thoughtful consideration of its operation. I just pulled the trigger on one. Might be a little step up from my FT-857D :-)
Your point regarding a general high level of performance being a given and the features making the difference is very valid. I'm a photographer by trade (ex Amateur Radio Magazine) and the story is the same with the 3 big camera manufacturers.
One thing to do is make the external screen high res to fully use 1920x1080 for spectrum, waterfall, decoder etc. all at once. External monitor should also be independend from the small screen and freely configurable for maximum usability. I think, we will have to wait 3..5 years for that.
Peter you are the best! Love your videos. You bring a smile to my face. Thank you!
It is a pleasure to watch your videos Sir. Thank you very much for sharing your wisdom.
I appreciate your reviews and discussionsm Your wisedom gained from 50+ years of experience makes the difference. So many KZread channels are all about flash, fancy editing and thinly disguised stab in the back tactics that even when they have knowledge, their delivery negates the message. Keep it up!
If it had an RF out to connect to an SDR, then it'd be pretty perfect. As it is, the ability to reduce QRM/QRN is insanely good and the DSP is spectacular. I really wish ICOMs were half as capable. And I own ICOM.
What a nice guy Peter is, a knolagable & informative enthusiast, I'm new to radio communications, it's a hobby I've been thinking 💭 about getting into for many years,, problem been affordability, it's a fascinating & a fantastic pass time ,I love gadgets, got many of them, when I get my inheritance I will definitely be getting something like the YAESU FTdx10 or a YAESU FT DX 3000 as it is now being discontinued, hopefully the price will drop🙏, I know in order to start this fascinating hobby requires me to get a license & of course legally must pass a set of upto 3 exams, that's the challenge, but I'm confident at passing the 1st one, wish me luck🙏🇬🇧
Very nice was thinking of buying one for the shack i like the external display monitor and coulor screen water fall looks amazing and different coulor function ❤
An absolutely great and honest review Peter, well done, love your reviews, cheers, Sam, 🇦🇺
Great. review without going into too many tech specs.. thank you ..
You are so fair and honest.
Thanks Peter I really enjoyed this video.
Very good review. I’m a little disappointed in the single antenna connector but the display hookup feature is very nice
The Best HF Radio! Got mine a week ago on sale for $1299 US. Absolutely love it!
Good and detailed explanation, thank you very much.
My Next Radio for sure, recently had a play with one and that DSP is awesome to say the least
I recently acquired this rig, it was an upgrade from my FT-991A which I got as my first rig. Now that I'm into CW as my main mode, I wanted a rig that could use a hardware roofing filter for CW without breaking the bank. I love it so far. Thanks and 73 de AI5DD
