Y Religion Episode 47 - Expanding Understanding of Eve (Amy Easton-Flake & Mark Ellison)

For centuries, some readers of Genesis have blamed Eve for the evils of the world because she ate the forbidden fruit in Eden. But Latter-day Saint scripture opens the way for different views, including seeing Eve’s decision as visionary and courageous. Our interpretations of Eve have not always been this positive, however, and historical Christianity’s interpretations haven’t always been that negative. In this episode Drs. Amy Easton-Flake and Mark Ellison expand our understanding of Eve.
Each year, Brigham Young University Religious Education professors produce hundreds of publications on subjects related to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This podcast brings this research into one place to enlighten the everyday seeker of truth. Interviewing the author, we discuss why the study was done, why it matters, and why the professor chooses to be both a scholar and a disciple. This is Y Religion: Research to Enlighten Your Mind.
Y Religion podcast episodes are available every two weeks and can be found on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Pandora, and on the web at rsc.byu.edu/media/y-religion

I completely agree with the previous commenter who describe Eve as our "Glorious Mother"! And I realize that much of this podcast is bringing to light the teachings of the past ages. With that being said, I take issue with stretching bending or breaking the truth in order to push a narrative. The whole discussion about whether or not Eve and Adam were created in the same instant is ridiculous for anyone who is endowed. But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter who is created first, as illustrated by the scriptures brought up about the first being last in the last being first, as well as the parable of the workers in the field. What's more important is that we come to Christ. That we embrace His gospel and covenants, and become One as He and The Father are one. As exemplified by Adam and Eve, neither of us is going anywhere in the eternities without the other. That's the important point. As was illustrated by the comment that we are not perfect without each other, though I would use the other interpretation of that word and say complete. When we obfuscate or prefaricate we invalidate. Mother Eve is a Queen and beautiful example of womanhood. AND she was beguiled by the adversary. But who among this has not been? Her partaking of the fruit first is not a reason to look down on her or to venerate her. It's just a fact. Eve is the valiant mother and queen of the human race on this world. Our discussion of her should always be reverent. She is worthy a veneration because of all she did for us, without the need of embellishment. I hope this doesn't come off as contentious. I just wanted to share my thoughts on the subject. I often see this from people who feel marginalized. And women have definitely (and wrongfully) been marginalized in many instances. These injuries should be healed, and that can best be accomplished through the truth of their divine purpose, without the need of embellishment. Just my opinion. 🤷‍♂️😁

I love the idea of thinking about whether something is prescriptive versus descriptive. That definitely shifts the way I think about some scriptures. Thanks!

Do you think that the statement that Adam will eat bread by the sweat of his brow is prescriptive or descriptive?

I agree we shouldn’t blame her for what she did. But the temple teaches a very very powerful truth that people often overlook when they want to glorify Eve for the fall. The first thing out of her mouth after she tells Adam it’s better… “I KNOW THEE NOW”! Meaning they didn’t know who they were conversing with before. We should never give satan the time of day. The scriptures in conjunction of the temple ceremony paints a very clear picture. Man (mankind) makes mistakes God knows this is gonna happen and has a plan prepared. James e Talmage : “Let not ignorance and thoughtlessness lead us into the error of assuming that the Father’s foreknowledge as to what would be, under given conditions, determined that such must be.” Again listen to the temple, the father makes it clear there was more info to be given to Adam and Eve WHILE IN THE GARDEN but that was derailed..😂

I don't know that I would say "derailed". To me, that suggests that the fall and much of what followed was plan B, which is not the case. Also, It seems the intended information was given after the fall and continues to be revealed.

Had Mother Eve Not Partaken of MORTAL Food…WE wold STILL BE IN The Garden…Innocent. “NOT” for Alll Eternity. Eve partook of mortal food. Which changed are celestial bodies. Giving us the opportunity to become For ourselves whom we would follow. The holy ordinance says of the temple are exactly clear. And the Holy Ghost bear witness of the truth.
