I was shocked when I compared the sound of my RME converters with my apollos. When I try to explain what good converters sound like to people, I tell them it's like going from 1080p to 4k resolution. I still use my apollo for tracking and use RME for my mixbus and monitoring.

I switched from the Clarett+ series from Focusrite to the RME UCX II about 1 1/2 years ago. The first thing I noticed was the clarity of the interface. I didn't realize just how much difference I was hearing until I mixed my first song and put it on and compared the Clarett+ to the UCX II. The reproduction of the recorded tracks on the RME were simply spectacular. The Focusrite was good, but not in the same league as the UCX II. Glad you like it.

I’ve been using the RME UCX (first version) for years! No crashes, solid updates, great support, the Total Mix has super in-depth for routing, mixing, creating templates for quick setup, etc. And because of the connections, it’s expandable! It’s sound quality is ultra clean, meaning it’s a clean slate for adding my own flavor and as you mentioned the “C” word, I have always taken advantage of the converters in the UCX rather than my MPC X SE and LIVE and have a familiar powerful workflow giving me the best of both worlds. Thanks Bolo for your great non conflict style content. I have used a few audio interfaces and sold them all for RME! My UCX has grown with me which is something I can’t say about other technology that can become obsolete. Good luck bro.

I've never tried an RME interface and I'm pretty sure they're good. I've heard/read nothing but good things about them. However, they are very expensive, just like most other higher-end gear. I have a lot of hardware synthesizers and drum machines with lots of outputs and I like to plug everything into the interface at once and track it all out whenever I'm ready using my two MOTU 24ai interfaces, each of which offer 24 analog inputs and 3 sets of ADAT I/O connections offering an additional 24 channels of ins and 24 outs if I want to expand with an external ADAT D/A or A/D converters. Also this system is expandable and networkable via AVB and it also has onboard DSP mixer and processing as well as work in standalone mode without a computer. With that said, I'm very happy with the sound quality of the MOTUs. Obtaining a comparable system like this using RME interfaces would be insanely expensive.

My current interface, is the reason I’m finally going to pull the trigger on the UFC II. I currently have the Focusrite 18i8 Gen III. Great interface WHEN USING THE FRONT INPUT JACKS. TERRIBLE INTERFACE WHEN USING THE BACK INPUTS. (Yeah I’m shouting) I didn’t discover the fixed -18db inputs, until I wanted to hook up my MPC X using all the outputs. Of course I looked on line to see if I was bugging out. Yup other people were complaining about it as well. Anyway, I have watched countless videos on UFC II and watched how to use Total Mix. • @EricJohnson-fh8zj

@algodley6099 that's what I was thinking. In that set up (the UAD being the master and the RME being slave), wouldn't you be tracking into the AD converters with the RME, and then listening back on the Apollo DA converters on playback anyways? And be losing out the better RME D-to-A conversion, where the difference would be most noticeable? Seems like it would defeat the purpose, because the AD conversion of the Apollo is more than sufficient for a clean input recording signal. It's the outgoing DA from the RME where you're going to notice the biggest difference. But honestly, none of it doesn't makes THAT much of a difference anyways, EXCEPT in the quality of the headphone output of the RME. In reality the outgoing DA makes no difference in the final mix because what comes out of the DAW just is what it is. Interfaces have come such a long way that Scarlett solo has more than enough pre-amp and conversion quality to record a pro level production....and no consumers are out there listening back on a RME interface lol. The end consumer will NEVER notice that last 5% of a difference in Audio quality that a pro level interface brings. Stop worrying about that last 4 or 5% in conversion quality....and start recording good music lol. Remember people...a lot of our favorite albums were recorded on equipment far inferior to what we can buy now for just a couple hundred dollars and set up in our bedrooms!

Great callout on the drivers. They are among the best in the business. Also good call out for the class compliant / MPC application. For those who don’t know what Bolo is talking about, you can hook a class compliant audio interface into some modern Akai MPCs for extra outs and ins. Really crucial for those who want individual outs for drums (in like a tracking situation.) All around a great review! No BS and right to the point. P.S. I think TotalMix will let you run more than one interface in a system if you want to expand later. The caveat here is I think they both need to be using the same connection type (e.g. USB).

The only 3 things I would change are: 1- an extra headphone output (come on, for the price we pay they could add it). 2- some physical buttons straight on the audio interface for cut, dim, talkback, mono, phase...like Audient ID44 or Apollo do (not comparing the quality) but the ease of use. And 3- Totalmix software is powerfull when you learn how to use but it takes time. Software like UAD or even Audient I found more friendly. What you think Bolo?

The RME ARC USB controller adds a lot of the functionality (and more) based on your second point. The macro actions you can program within TotalMix when paired with the ARC are pretty extensive, and if you’re not using the Durec port for recording, then it plugs straight into the interface. Look into it. There’s also the option of Total Mix Remote for iOS which is a touchscreen remote control app for all Total Mix capable devices (turning your interface into a pseudo digital mixer).

I think they should release an interface for home studio, same internal quality, less I/Os and more functions/buttons straight on the interface, like audient id24, and for the totalmix, they really should do a revision it's to much complicated, specially for home studio producers.

Sure it sounds great and cool features n all, but I think the most important, #1 thing is, stability. RME is ROCK SOLID. For reasons others have mentioned. (Older UCX Fireface)

I said this a bunch of times this is the best mistake I've ever made as far as music equipment goes. When I first got back into music 2 years ago I was looking every body with the Apollo but I have an m1 Mac and it didn't support Apollo yet. RME did.. thing is amazing sounding with a clarity, It's very flexible and routing both hardware.ios and internal And the best part about it is the support. They support their products for almost 20 years after purchase with updates. It's kind of pricey but not the most expensive and performance for price is stellar.... And the Babyface is just as good just portable. The conversion is the same. I have both.... The only thing They need to do is step up there advertisement. Lot of people don't know about these

Dont be Skeptical about the Babyface Pro FS. Ive had the BF, BF Pro, and now the FS. I use it for AD on main Monitors, and as master clock source. I use the Digiface USB with 3 Presonus DP88's (Burr Brown Converters) for summing and interfacing with my patchbay of hardware. Also enables me to use the Baby Face Pro in CC mode with my MPC, and send 8 channels into my hardware, before patching the 8 channels into my DAW VIA the Digiface USB. Ive considered the UCX II, but ill wait for the next update first. The good thing is ill def be staying RME so my setup wont change at all. Just better quality. This set up also enables me to dump my entire DAW track load into my summing mixer VIA 3 DP88's with burr brown AD/DA.

If you don't need the bells and whistles then the ADI-2 FS is a better AD/DA device. I spoke to RME and ALL the ADI-2 are a step up in converter quality over All The rest. Then you have three ADI-2 models which have converters that are ALL the same. The difference is within the other features in the ADI-2 lineup. The ADI-2 is meant for Monitors and Mastering.

I’m there. I have Apollo right now but RME has kinda crept into my attention, and there appears to be a “lot” on offer, with expansion & support, plus I’ve got some nice analogue pre’s etc.. Let’s face it, at the end of the day, you’re always pushing for as close to perfection as you can get! I’ll bite the bullet, and either go native with the plugins or do a work around and keep and integrate the Apollo with all my UA (a lot), plugins. Looking at RME, they seem to be compatible with anything with all the expansive tech they’ve developed! Just too good to ignore!

The RME UCX II does not work in Class Compliant mode with any of the new AKAI MPCs. After you put the RME IN Class Compliant Mode, sequence some beats and keep playing it, then start changing banks or jumping to different screen that is when the pops and clicks start. RME believes that the MPC just can not handle interface, remember in CC mode the RME takes over the USB protocol of Akai and it is one some firmware that is very basic. However it seems that RME BabyFace and Pro version do work in CC mode and you are able to use the ADAT in and out and there are no pops or clicks. Lastly I would ditch the entire Apollo system, the conversion is a joke, everyone knows it. RME latency is the best, and if you venture into PCIE cards, you will have the tightest system. RME user for over 15 years, converters do matter, Burl, Lavry, Mytek, Cransesong that is the name of the game. Let us know how it goes with the X SE. Also supposedly the X SE has Burr Brown converters but those are not your daddys Burr Brown that was in original MPCs. Do you thing with Akai men, let them know they need to change the converters or give us digital in and outs with word clock, it will be probably cheaper for them and make tons of people happy.

And meetings everyday for which gate and compression are key. I would definitely add the ARC USB thought, I is an essential add on.
