Andy’s stage fright came to a head in California, they halted that Police/XTC Tour. I ended up having to drive from suburban Chicago to Madison Wisconsin to see it. The Police were excellent but XTC stole the show... their music was WAY way more interesting... had White Music, GO2, Black Sea and the double vinyl version of English Settlement (an absolute masterpiece). I worshipped XTC in those daze... and driving 4 hours with other XTC fans and friends was WELL worth it!

That was the very last XTC show ever, not counting TV performances or the radio tour in 1989. It was April 3rd, 1982.

I may be mistaken, but I believe their last LA show was 40 years ago tonight April 4, 1981, at the Hollywood Palladium. XTC with Wall of Voodoo and Hazel O'Connor.

This should have been a massive hit in a civilised society

I disagree. It's way too good. In both civilised and non-civilised societies, the masses depend on infantile needs. There are very occasional exceptions when wilful genius somehow penetrates the majority's mushed brains but it's a rarity.

I love screaming at the top of my lungs with this song.

It’s scary how prescient this song is now, here in California. Forty!! Years later. Not to mention many other places. History repeats. Good song tho!! If only more would listen...

The import U.K. single of No Thugs In Our House was designed as a mock theater and it came with paper cut outs of the characters in the song, for example the insect headed worker wife, and the young policeman who just cant grow up and the husband that burns his paper, sucks his pipe while studying their cushion floor and of course young Graham, dreaming of a world where he could do just what he wanted to. It looked like the opening visual in this video and the table @ 0:53.

Yes! I have that one. XTC had some very clever packaging ideas. the 7" version of "This World Over" (from The Big Express) came with a set of real vacation postcards ""Greetings from London", etc_ but each postcard was of a different city razed by nuclear warfare.

No one mimed on Whistle Test - XTC included. This is the Whistle Test footage and somebody has plonked the Album recording of the song on top. They did both Yacht Dance and No Thugs live on the show. I know because I watched it at my mate's house back in 1982, when I was seventeen. Time just flies by don't it?

@@srl6018 That's depressing, that someone felt the need to tamper with it. Maybe the sound quality was so bad. Time does fly. I was 13 is 82 and remember buying the 45 of Senses Working Overtime. Couldn't afford albums at that point! XTC were always amazing. They fascinated me ever since Nigel in 79. I think that was the third single my dad ever bought me, after Hit me with your Rhythm stick and Germ Free Adolescent.

@@WarrenCromartie2 From what I can gather from another comment, Virgin liked the Whistle Test footage, and dubbed on the studio version so that the whole thing could be used for a promo video for the single. (Penny pinching Branson!) I too bought the 45 of Senses, prior to getting the marvellous English Settlement. I was 17 and could (just) afford it!

This is what they released back in 1982 as the promo video. Essentially the Old Grey Whistle performance with a shortened version of the album track as the audio.
