Every concert film director and crew could take lessons from this. We don't need a million edits or a million cameras. Capture the band, and capture good sound. That's it. Your job is done. This is how it should be.

I remember a quote, probably from Andy, saying that it's a simple drum beat played on the wrong drums and that it's inspired by DEVO's cover of the Stones' "Satisfaction." That said, it's one of my favorite drum parts and it just sounds like it fits the song like a well oiled machine.

I did! I was 9 and remember it VERY well being performed on Top of the Pops. My 8 year old daughter suddenly started singing it without prompting which was just great.

@@LuisRamirez-ex6yy I love this, I was 9 when it came out and remember my parents (who I thought were old but were 35 at the time) being WELL aware of this song...just their slightly grudging acknowledgment was a recognition that there was something a little special here. It was just a great time and as kids growing up on these songs we had a fantastic time. I just wish I could get it back. My 8 year old daughter suddenly starting singing it randomly which gives me joy.

I was born in the 80s but a big fan of lots of other great bands/music from then, thanks to my somewhat older husband for introducing me to actually good music. XTC would come up on my Spotify for a long time now and I tended to skip, but something last week made me really stop and listen, then I watched the This is Pop rockumentary on here and I'm sold. Love this one.

A late reply: the original footage was cleaned up for a relatively resent broadcast.....Great song by a fantastic band by the way!

KZread is nice for great archival footage but tbh the original PAL masters of this or top of the pops for example are MUCH better.

That's like asking how video from the 1930s is so good. Please stop assuming that the VCR is the end-all and be-all of video quality - we had *FAR* better quality much earlier on, on *Film,* which has a high resolution. It's just that early Film was *very* liable to degradation and fire.

Obviously (old) film is a very high quality medium, but often it isn't preserved well & people don't take the care and attention to convert it to digital well, especially live music. That said, this was recorded in a TV studio so I guess I shouldn't be so surprised that it was captured expertly. I watch a lot of old live music and it is rarely this good.
