I was in a guitar shop. London, England. Casual staff. Some time ago. Dave Gregory came in. He stayed. We chatted. A very young lad showed up, looked around. Oh .............. (finish it yourself, it conjured it a degree of surprise.) Well, let's give it away. "Fuck me, your'e Dave Gregory aren't you? You're in XTC." Yes. I am . Hi. How do you play Bridges of London? Straight off. No foreplay. Dave was doodling on an old Tele, if I remember, so he showed him. No side. No preciousness. No superstar. Just a gift to a fan, another guitarist. Kept it up until the kid nailed it. I think that says it all. If you see any gaps, fill them in yourselves. DG the real thing, One musician encouraging another. Musicianship - not show

The term underrated or underappreciated are thrown around a lot on KZread, especially for musicians who are neither. Dave Gregory is both. Immensely talented and humble, he is one of my favorites and it's a shame XTC didn't become rich and famous. Same thing with Colin Moulding too.

I just love the guitar interaction that weaves throughout their songs, truly brilliant. More guitarists today should strive to write complimentary parts that use differing chord structures and accent lines. Dave and Andy were masters of this type of playing, I can only watch from afar and learn.

Woah - that finish was brutally powerful: they should have ended the song like that on the studio recording. Chambers' caught the emotion just right. Haunting.

This was the last album by XTC, for which they wrote the songs to be played live. After that, it was all baroque overdubbings. It's therefore their tightest, most cogent album, IMO.

I am with 95thFoot. To my knowledge English Settlement was planned as an album where they could use all the studio wizardry and without thinking of live. That does not mean that every of the songs of it can not be played live. But some of the album is not reproducibly live for a 4 men gang. BTW. Black Sea is also my favourit, and this is one of the best versions of Towers of London. Peter Kroll, Singapore

All that's missing is the "CLANG" of the hammer against the steel fire extinguisher from the studio recording!

Hair bands didn't really become de rigueur for bands until the other end of this decade (87-89). But yes, these guys know their onions and are the real item.

Real musicians, unlike those post-punk posers playing the same chord and the same silly bass riff ...
