Beating on that with a hammer to adjust the chain slack is going to ruin that adjustment plate pretty quick. You need to put the bike up on a stand loosen the axle nut enough to where you can turn those by hand.

Does the measurement of the chain slack have to be checked with the rear wheel off the ground? My service manual doesn't state to do this but it looks like most guys do it that way.

Did you actually do that with your wheel on the ground 🤪
