XT 250 Mod's Video 2 22 18

A look at how I modified my Yamaha XT250 for touring the back country.
I like to film my travels using my old GoPro Hero-2 action camera, and my pocket Nikon CoolPix S9000 camera.
This is a great platform for exploring back roads, and trails.
This video was shot using the Nikon S9000, and edited with Cyberlink Power Director 11 video editing software.
Filmed Feb. 21, 2018

New subscriber. For a second I thought you were Chainsaw Bob, but he gave up his XT250 and went with a TW200, he's 80 years old..

Thanks for the informative upload. I just picked one up. I’m around your height and weight. What kind of spring preload did you do on yours? They put mine on the highest setting and it feels a little too stiff

Thanks for the video Larry. Nice work on the fabrication. I’ll make that same crash bar. Do you know which model Cycra brush guards those are? I checked their site and they have several models.

Love it! I just watched your newest Blackwater River vid and that was great too. I was seriously curious how your ride is set up. Minimalist touring!

Do you have anything specific you want to know? The video shows most of my mods. I haven't loaded it down for camping. Most of my rides are day rides, and exploring back roads for interesting sites. This video illustrates just what I mean... kzread.info/dash/bejne/dWhrttR-acvRnLA.html

Have you had any issues with the battery / charging system with all the accessories on? I'd really like to have some LED flood lights on mine and I'm trying to figure how many watts the charging system will support without draining the battery.

I have a LED voltage indicator mounted. It monitors battery voltage. With these LED aux. lights, it still shows over 13 volts at idle. No problems keeping a charge. I don't ride much after dark, but I do keep the Aux. LED's on all the time, so I can be seen. Haven't had any issues with charging at all. I think they take about 1/2 amp each. Keep in mind my XT is a 2017 model. No idea about older models.

Did you have to customize your handlebar to mount the brush guards?

  • @larry3138

No ! I did have to add 1/2" & 3/4" extra spacers, to move the guard's bar away from brake tubing, and make the GoPro mtg. bar parallel to the handlebar.

I went a different path, Ventura rack, 2 bags one secured to the rack the other bag zips to the front of the bag that's secured to the rack over the pillion seat, the rear bag on the rack will easily fit a 10L steel Jerry can & pack padding around it so it can't move. Tank bag Marine grade 12 Volt power 🔋 & usb. Handlebar helmet lock 🔐 Phone holder alumina, I don't like plastic.

I use a Go-Pro Hero3+ and a few cheap imitations , also a small Nikon Cool-pix . I have a lot of trouble with the mic's and have not found a good one to use yet. I use a helmet top mount and a helmet mouth guard mount, a chest mount , handlebar mount . I just have fun making videos and make them to suit myself. I am always surprised to see the videos that people like, They are the one's that I don't think people will like. What I like the most is the replies I get from people around the world.... Thanks ....Old Chainsawbob

You should tilt the horns down to prevent bugs and water from getting into the horn mouth.

I have a set of same horns on my NX250, positioned the same. They've been on there for several years with no problems. I do get bugs inside sometimes. Now you mention it, I'm going to open the horn, and see how it's constructed. I may be able to drill a small drain hole in the bottom? If I can't satisfy myself that the drain will work, I'll tilt them down. A work in progress!

The lack of ABS and the overall simplicity of the xt250 is what i love about it. ABS would take away from that.
