    Nice video Erik. I will be doing this real soon to my 83 xj900 seca. Where do you get the YICS blanking tool?

    John McIntire it is a Yamaha tool, so your local Yamaha dealer, or maybe eBay.

    Hello nice video, I have the same bike and I am confused about the only 3 positions choke control and it is not enough because it not so many. Did you setup a new choke on your bike ? On intermediate positin the motor is running too fast and without choke the moto is under the normal speed and makes a lot of bad noises. Thanks for your feedback if you have time for sure.

    My xj is from 84 and with choke lever on the left handlebar. It can be pulled to almost any choke setting I want. Note: I do have a choke pull knob on the carburettors as well because I have a newer type carburettors installed on my bike

    Is it standard for the XJ900 to have a voltmeter?

  • @Lorddxt

    @Lorddxt

    No, but it is really easy to add to a small digital voltmeter to the instrument cluster

    Hello again Erik! I just had my carbs synchronized by a bike shop and the mechanic insisted that the blanking tool was unnecessary as he was able to sync them without it. Is this possible?

  • @Lorddxt

    @Lorddxt

    5 ай бұрын

    Nope, not if it has to be a proper sync You can get it somewhat ok, but not perfect without having the yics blanched off (well you can get lucky)

    @@Lorddxt That´s exactly my thoughts even though many seem to argue the opposite. Does not make any sense that Yamaha would put in the resources and efforts to make this tool if it isn´t needed

    @FrankyBmagic correct I actually accidently forgot to use the tool once, and didn't realize it until I was going to remove the tool (that wasn't there) sync looked 100% Inserted the tool, and they were only synced to approx 90% Engine sounded ok, but was running better and smoother after a resync with the blocking tool

    What is the reason the carburetors become unsynchronized in the first place and is this preventable? Also, can it occur at any given time or does it usually happen when the engine exceeds a certain mileage? Thanks for a great video!

    There are several reasons the carburettors get out of sync Uneven engine wear, so each cylinder doesn't make the exact same amount of vacuum as the other cylinders Valve adjustment, which effects valve duration, which again affect cylinder vacuum Carburettor wear Changes in airflow - new Vs dirty air filter or micro leaks So no you can't avoid the carburettor from slowly getting out of sync, but the better you maintain your bike, usually less adjustment are required

    @@Lorddxt Thank you for all this information! I also have a 1984 XJ900F that I purchased last year. Came with a swapped engine but 100% original and museum registered. Sorry to keep asking but how do you notice that they are out of sync? =D Ordered this manual yesterday, seemed to have great reviews: Yamaha XJ900F Fours 1983-1994 (Haynes Manuals)

    Usually you don't notice, because it happens gradually over thousands of km / miles. But over time the bike just doesn't run as sweet as it used to do. If you follow the service chart, you will check the valve clearance for each 12.000 km / 8.000 miles, and after a valve adjustment, you should balance / sync your carburettors

    @@Lorddxt Hello again sir! In the "Haynes Service & Repair" manual it states that the carburetor synchronization should be done every 6000km or 6 months. The more often the better I assume but what is your opinion on this?

  • @Lorddxt

    @Lorddxt

    I usually synchronize my carburettor as a part of the service I give it every time I change the oil. Which is usually less than the 6000 km stated in the Haynes manual. But if I were to pay a shop to do it, I would likely follow the Haynes suggests 6000 or once a year

    What is that blanking tool?

  • @Lorddxt

    @Lorddxt

    A blanking tool is a special tool to block the Yamaha YICS passage, so you can properly adjust each carburettor without having the others interfere

    Naaah, you first adjust the air/fuel ratio screws (by Colortune or if you are cheap by many tries, looking at the spark plugs) THEN you balance the carbs (as altering air/fuel ratio throw them out of balance again). What you did here is.....amateurish at best,to not use a stronger word.

  • @Lorddxt

    Nope. You are wrong. This is the way I was taught both by my master and at mechanic school. You defensively always want the balancing done first, before adjusting til idle mixture.
