6:51 I think this whole episode exists to sell us on Clay. He's the odd man out of the four main characters, everyone else on the team is incredibly acrobatic, while Clay is big and slow. While he almost never actually struggles in any of his encounters here, they're set up in a way to make us doubt that Clay can pull it off. Admittedly I don't remember the episode well enough to know if anyone outright criticized Clay for his slowness, but two of the three challenges present a test of agility only for Clay to turn them into a test of intelligence and patience. It's here to set up Clay as having a valuable skillset, at least from where I'm sitting. Also, just as a side note, One of the coolest parts about Xiaolin Showdown for me was always how the heroes and villains were always trading powers: My best example has to be when the only item the heroes have left is the Mantis Flip Coin, which just happened to be the very first item used by Jack in a showdown. Just the fact that any power being used by the villains in one episode could be in the heroes' hands in the next and vice-versa. Fun times.

I remembered the backstory that EVERY Shen Gong Wu was used by the original Dragon Monk to defeat Wuya, and wondered how in the heck he could use the Heart of Jong and Sapphire Dragon with their huge downsides...then we got the Emperor Scorpion and I realized that it's the necessary CONTROL for Shen Gong Wu otherwise too self-driven to be net benefits on their own. Omi's golden skin just seemed like a reference to the Buddha to me. Even though he stands out like crazy, it's not unheard of for main characters to become artistically distinct from the rest. The Simpsons is an example. A couple seasons in, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie are pretty much the only characters whose hair are a part of their skull, so they don't even look like they fit in to their own show. Omi was probably conceived VERY early in pre-production, and they were too attached to how he looked to change him after they decided on a style.

You google 'gold' and get a different visual than what a 'gold' color crayon or pencil would give you, as I don't think a more realistic hue would have had the same vibe, but that's just speculation, on why they did it. She did pull one "sudden but inevitable betrayal" with Mala Mala Jong, but... well, I can forgive her for that as her patience was almost assuredly shot from close proximity to Jack Spicer for an extended length of time. Also, what happened in the next few episodes are a contributing factor, and I don't even know why I'm being evasive as if spoilers matter, but I guess I'll continue to dodge spoiling, regardless.

Starting out as one who believed he was the only dragon warrior and did not trust in others, those two episodes are where he develops the most. It might not be overt, but working with a stranger, even going as far as to offer him a spot with him, and finally trusting and seeing the powers his fellow dragon warriors had that did not were massive for his development

I remember back in kids WB days during the episode where Jack Spicer robs the temple there was a contest to go online at commercial break and write in whch Wu was left. This was real early internet days, so while I was proud of guessing it right, there wasn’t time to get to the computer haha. Really boosted engagement and expectations though.

@@victorviterbo3952 I think this is really important to the general format, most shows with a premise like The Showdown end up in Kid's Toy/Game Anime land where all conflicts are solved via the ritualized contest, which is cool and fine, Yugioh is a banger, Beyblade is awesome, its a functional format But having this respected and ritualized contest while also just having people literally rip items off each other, even mid-contest, or steal them from holding, and having normal martial combats, gives the show a unique flavor

I loved how Kimiko’s outfit changed all the time. But I also love Raimundo’s character arc over the whole series. From a cocky guy who made jokes, to his turn to evil, to redeeming himself, and ending the series by becoming the leader. Him becoming leader was also a departure because you would’ve expected the kid in the logo would have been the leader. Makes me wonder if Chase was wrong about Omi being “the chosen one” which wasn’t really expanded upon. There was no prophecy or anything and even his “dots” have no explanation. He just kinda glows which makes me think of Avatar State stuff but it’s not stated what it means. But if there’s a chosen one prophecy it probably applies to Raimundo or the team as a whole rather than a single individual.

The plan is to upload a season a week, but I’d love to know if there’s any other shows or topics you’d be interested in seeing!

this was a very entertaining revisit to one of my favorite childhood shows. If you do a part 2, i would love to see it; that whole second season i remember being awesome.

I feel like there's some irony to be found that Jack Spicer shares a name with a gay man, and the first thing I saw when I looked him up on tumblr was ship art of him and Blossom.

Great work dude. Hope you decide to keep this going. I wasn't a dedicated watcher but caught most of the series randomly watching syndication.

I remember a while back where people said hes yellow because the creator is racist to chinese. ...while the creator was chinese. Reminds me of Stellar Blade.

This is a really fun idea project. I loved the show exactly for the fun showdowns and that anyone could win or lose them. I was very surprised about the results of season 1! Love to see who wins at the end of the series.

Yesss, so glad somebody besides me recognizes this show's existence! Though for some reason, Jackie Chan Adventures always seems to come up when talking about this show... wonder why lol. I always preferred the ending of JCA myself, putting a very tight bow on everything, resolving every single plot thread, whereas Xialoin Showdown leaves the door open for everything by comparison. Though looking back on it through this video, I actually remember a lot more about this show than I thought. Maybe they both have their strong points.

I was debating going back and watching that, maybe making a video on it. Might not be as in depth or episode by episode, but I didn’t watch it much growing up

@@Colby2D From what I remember, it has a pretty similar plot structure, in terms of the enemy groups occasionally getting victories over the heroes, including some big enemy wins that completely shift the priorities of the heroes. I think it's totally worth a watch/rewatch! I don't know how many others would be interested in a video, but I'll definitely be there :D
