HTH 👍👍💚💚💛💛👍👍

I had stayed in HK for several yrs. I was made to understand that as HK housing is small with many members living together, it is logical that they stay out late before going back home. And for this reason, businesses are opened late to cater to this demand.

Let's clarify some misconceptions - 1) employment pass and permanent resident in Singapore is not migration. You migrate only if u become another country's citizen and it is your choice. 2) Prostitution is legal in Singapore, so what kind of entertainment is not available in Singapore which is in HK? Bars, karaoke lounges, gaming centres (I saw lots of kids but not many adults) etc are all in Sg. As for food, it is more cosmo in Singapore than HK, I should know since most of my relatives live in HK and I travelled there since early 90s. 3) Education, the parents determine the amount of pressure their kids are subjected to, be it good marks, good schools or maximising their potentials, ie. English in primaries must be 95 and above!

Interesting chat topic. I enjoyed listening to you two sweet-looking sisters, and observing the food you ordered. And I love that you got your facts correct eg the chewing gum law 👍 As a Singaporean, here’s my little input, - no country is perfect, including Singapore 🇸🇬 - like all countries, our own unique history, culture, native and immigrant residents -and large expat residents, our existential economic survival quintessentially influence and drive Singapore to become as we are. But nothing is static, we continue to learn and evolve. - I think words that best describe Singapore: manicured, efficient, truly diverse, highly managed or regulated, frenetic work culture, peaceful, green, pragmatic, and practical. All these can be positive and negative. Cheers!

I have an interesting observation... Hong Kong people also uses spoon and fork to eat? I wonder where that came from. I always thought it was a S.E. Asia thing. It's probably somewhat related to our histories as British colonies, but even in UK and the western world, most would still just use only the fork to pick up food, even rice... (this has been my pet peeve/culture shock when dining with westerners) I think we all commonly come to realize the utility of the spoon/fork combination and evolved even beyond the British/West... :)

  • @MsKarman

Interesting observation! Like in cha chaan teng, we’re used to get forks and spoons from the staff, except using chopsticks for noodles. I guess it’s a mixture of Chinese and western thing, i.e. use spoons for rice & soup or forks for meat/ veggies. Cha chaan teng serves both Chinese and western food (e.g. spaghetti, steak, fries), maybe also because of our history as British colony.

On the multi-cultural aspect, that is what makes Singapore unique. Many of the food are only found in Singapore and maybe Malaysia as all the creative cooks of each race will mix ingredients and cooking methods from other cultures and create new dishes, new street food. So if there are 10 recipes from each culture, 4 cultures mixed up can create 1000+ recipes. In HK, the local cuisine is Cantonese based, not so much of Cantonese + other cultures. In a way, we can also say it is "boring". In Singapore, there are public holidays, events and festivals for all the race and religion. You can celebrate your own festivals and call it "boring", or you can celebrate all the festivals with colleagues and friends from other race/religion and learn new and interesting traditions. Both Singapore and Hong Kong are cosmopolitan cities, if we are open-minded, there is no such thing as boring or un-interesting.

That’s Singapore local school system. It has been like that since 1960s. No one grumble about it. School start promptly at 7.30am. You don’t need Science to explain it. It is take it or leave it. If you are not Singaporean, you can send your kids to International school and maybe they start late. I went through this system and my kids went through it too. Indeed a few generation of Singaporean has gone through this school timing and no one complained about it. My kids in their primary school days got to wake up as early as 5.30am to shower, took breakfast and catch the school bus at 6.15am daily from primary 1 right up to Secondary school.

It's also to facilitate those bus drivers who have to fetch workers to work place eg office (esp for workers in jurong) If students start school same timing as office workers, there will b shortage of bus drivers

@@summerapple7062 I feel like this is a very typical SG thing, that when someone complains about one thing, your 'collective mentality' just jumps out and screams, 'no one has a problem with it!', I mean, you can't represent everyone! You can only represent and speak for yourself.

What does that show? Laws are abided and its people are also educated at same time. Isn't that why your country is in shambles since the laws are just there for show and basically useless? Lol! 🤣
