The desoldering gun has been somewhat hit or miss since I've got it, where sometimes it's a genius tool and other times it just doesn't seem to work - but combining it with some hot-air to pre-heat the area seems to really make it shine.

Conductive foam usually has a couple of uses: To provide a conductive path for the Pcb to the chassis to assist with ESD protection, and also as to help reduce the electromagnetic radiation of the circuit board.

Top Tip: Use dry wipes under your cotton buds, it will soak up the dirty IPA more thoroughly/quicker.

low melt solder for the win i used to get no end of issues before learning this lesson great content as always

nice 1! i would put kapton tape on the ground planes to block solder from it. when trying to spread or clean extra solder on pins try very low assistive air heat to make solder flow better w pen.

I have seen some console repair people tin the acutal contacts on the port, align the contacts to the pads on the board, heat from the top get the solder to wet and press the down on the ports so its contacts mate and align with the board and only then worry about the grounding pins. The ground pins have more leeway to get the solder in and through the board.

My wife has an assortment of hemostatic forceps with locking handles that she used before she retired. They are perfect for clamping ports like that since they clamp tight but not too tight & can be locked & unlocked with one hand. Amazon & EBay both sell an assortment of sizes. Might be worth a try.

I've used a soldering iron on one side of the board and the de-soldering tool on the other at the same time when I can't use a hot air gun safely for clearing the holes after removing the component. It's tricky but workable after practice.

Investigating an issue with some PCBs we had made in China, we were concerned that the legs of the USB C connector were not receiving sufficient solder. It seems that most PCB lines use the usual screen printing process to put a bit of solder paste on the pads where the securing legs go before soldering the board in an oven. This doesn't usually fill the holes with solder, which is what USB C, HDMI etc connectors need to be as strong as possible. Admittedly the HDMI socket on this board did look as if it had a very hard life. What do people do with their consoles?

Thanks for another great video! What do you practice on before offering a service like this to customers? Do you buy broken machines to practice on? Also, have you experienced damaged traces, could you repair that?

I've been copiously hammering at Aliexpress practice kits putting my rework station through its paces, never used hot air before so its a learning curve and found a lovely liquid flush for wash unsoldering made by a company called Thermalready, otherwise I am like da Cod3r and just use the Kingbo stuff as its cheap and efficient. My big project at mo is rebuilding my damaged in transit Startt 3d printer as I have gotten the bits to convert it to a light laser engraver as well, also recently converted a pillar drill to a milling machine and rebuilt a 1930's mini lathe making me master of shapes for a lot of materials hehe

I wanted to give a tidbit of advise that may help in the future. If you solder the pins on the top first, you will make sure they are aligned before anchoring and then when you flip the board, it will stay in place for you to solder your anchors. I learned that a little while back and it has certainly improved my practice nicely. Awesome videos. Keepem coming! :)))))

I'll give it a try. I always to an anchor first because I don't want the weight of the port hanging on the pins - but this is probably being over cautious - it's not like I'm trying to plug HDMI cables into to it while soldering.

Modify crocodile and bulldog clips as clamps

You could use a crocodile clip as a clamp.... metal sprung type.. should be strong enough and take the heat.

The cod3r heats up the hdmi by holding the hot air under the board facing up and then lifting the hdmi upwards, which I think makes it easier to see how it's lifting off the board.

Nice repair ..You're right definitely a good money makery the HDMI ports I do them all the time nonstop Is between the design flaw on the PS5 HDMI port certain models And the design flaw xbox series S & X Where the ground pins are too short So it doesn't anchor right Also the painted legs Of the ground Anchors I usually stand them down with sand paper

Yea I definitely think the legs are too short. It'd certainly be more forgiving if they were longer, as it would be easier to put direct heat into them when soldering.

Love your channel and hate to criticise but this is not the best way to change the port. You must take the heatsink off to allow for more space to work and it must be done with the port side up. Thanks for the videos

Couple of folks who specialise in consoles have told me to heat from the back, and on the past two I've done, it's worked very well. As you see, I didn't need to remove the heatsink at all, since I was doing all the heating from behind. However, as with many repairs, there's more than one way to do it, so it's all good 👌

Oh I see where you're coming from, I'll keep it in mind. Have you had parts drop off before? Not an issue I've ever had on laptop mobos that are a lot more densely populated than these consoles...

have you ever tried your knowledge of circuits and tracing on a solid state guitar amp i think you'd be quite good at it and open another repair venue. i heard the new PS5 slim has some problems with freezing lockups and sometimes automatic shutdowns, that would make for an interesting vid. i do alot of desktop repairs but you've shown me how to trace on laptops and i thank you for that.

xboxes have solder points on the ground plane to hold the hdmi down in place, you are supposed to braid that off otherwise it wont sit flush

Absolutely right. Those really should be soldered too in order to make sure the port has that extra rigidity at the front. I tend to tin the pads for the data pins and also those anchors at the front, then heat from underneath (with the board overhanging the bench) and drop the port into place after the solder has melted. Hold for a few seconds to ensure those front anchors get stuck down too.

One thing I dont get is how some series s boots up slower than if you gotten the console new/refurbished from the factory???

Hey Adam can I give a tip. Try next time is drop methoude zo fill in the solder contacts wirh unleaded when you see solder is melted drop the hdmi connector in it. You will see that it will be better methode.

I'll give it a try - I've always been taught to clean off old solder and apply new, but since there's so many different methods for stuff I'm happy to just try each one so people can see them all.

Is that a 915 de-soldering gun? If yes, are you able to tell me what size the internal spring is that attaches to the little black trigger thingy on the back that releases the glass tube. I opened mine to do maintenance and the bugger just took off to an unknown dimension.

You can use a nozzle, as long it is a large one.

How about using miniature metal bulldog clips as clamps?

You should get some low melt so you can remove those items a bit easier

I had to replace an xbox one s bluray drive and it was harder to take apart.

I was wondering if you have tried the hall effects sensors for the controllers yet?

I really want to try some, but to my knowledge, there's no retro-fit hall effect modules for xbox controllers. There's one or two indie controllers out there, but all the ones I've seen have some deal-breaker issue for me, such as costing $300 or having digital triggers designed for the switch or something like that.

2cm, maybe 3... Kinda got to feel it out. If you move back, you get better coverage, but lose more heat.

I never use a nozzle.

Yea these consoles really separate the mid-range tools like mine from the high end ones. It's do-able, but you have to pull out all the tricks like off-handing the hot air while soldering, while better tools will cope on their own.

@@Adamant_IT Update. Literally doing it right now. I bought some chipquick low melt and that stuff is awesome if you can get your hands on some. EEV blog has a video on it and its exactly like he showed. My 858D took a little bit but it eventually came off. Did it just like you did. Time to clean it up and put the new port on.

how much do you charge for that repair because my boss pays me 4 dollars to do it

At the moment I've been charging £60 for old-gen consoles and £80 for new-gen, but as I get the process nailed down I'll be reviewing these prices to figure out what the going rates are. Places on the internet that do it a lot cheaper, but having a brick-and-mortar store like mine where the warranty actually holds weight means I can charge more.

different parts of the world have different economy pricing.. a pack of cigs is about $8 in Florida USA while in NYC is $18.. cant realistically expect to get paid same in all parts of world.

@@Adamant_IT man I've been wanting to tell my boss to go screw himself for a long time. i can't believe I've been getting screwed over like that. i mean i knew he was charging customers more than what i was getting paid but i didn't know it was that much more. he's always on about how much it cost for marketing and customer service and I've always been afraid to start my own business. but i think i might give it a shot.

Friendly tip: use gravity to your advantage. If you solder the rear pins first, it will hold the port so you can flip it over to do anchors. Since we are on tips, get a big tip to remove solder from anchors. Also if you have the board right side up and heat from bottom you can lightly tap the port and you can see when the port moves. I’ve done this hundreds of times and no ripped traces. With that said I think you did a great job with the tools you have.
